Joya: international writers’ summer residency

The Joya: international writers’ residency offers sublime peace and tranquility and a supportive environment in an area of outstanding natural beauty. High in the Andalucían sierras the residency is based at an ‘off-grid’ eco-retreat and almond farm in the heart of a 22,000 hectare natural park.
The Joya: international writers residency, along with Joya: AiR (artist in residence) is part of the non-profit arts led field research center, Joya: arte + ecología. This is a trans-disciplinary organisation that institutes seminars, creates art/science collaborations, promotes artists, runs courses, works with Universities in Spain and the UK and curates exhibitions within Europe.
Duration of residency
The ‘open call’ asks for submissions by May the 14th 2016 and is for the summer period of June, July and August 2016.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
The residency offers opportunities to writers, poets, playwrights, essayists and composers and can host up to six creatives at any one time.
Primarily we are interested in creative or technical authors whose work manifests a discourse with the environment and sustainability. However we have a wide range of interests and would accept all genres of writing.
Accommodation
Each accepted applicant has full board, their own room to sleep and work with attached bathroom, as well as access to all areas around the estate.
Fees and support
The Joya: arte + ecología writers residency has a fee of €300 per week + tax (10%). This covers the cost of accommodation, wood for heating, water and all meals. It also includes collection from our nearest transport hub, Vélez Rubio.

Accompanying friends and family are welcome subject to the contribution of the same outgoing fees as the resident artist (above).
Expectations towards the artist
Writers participating in the residency program are invited to talk about their work to other participants and residents’ although this is not obligatory.
Application information
We ask applicants to provide us with their name and email address along with their website and/or three mentions on the internet to where their work/reviews or references to their writing can be seen. Applications must be submitted via the Joya: arte + ecología website.

'The Joya: arte + ecología writers residency is based at Cortijada Los Gázquez and it is the perfect retreat. The founders along with everyone else at ‘Joya' have created just the right atmosphere. It’s a friendly and supportive environment and, at the end of your day’s work, there’s always a fabulous meal and great company. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you’re free of everyday distractions and interruptions. I loved the atmosphere within the farmhouse and there are many places within easy walking distance to find inspiration. My own daily walks along the dry riverbeds in the area encouraged the close observation that’s important in my writing.
