RSA Open Exhibition – 16 July to 30 August 2016, RSA Lower Galleries

Drawing from artists across the whole of Scotland and beyond, the RSA Open Exhibition showcases a wide range of small and medium sized works (max. 80cm in any direction) selected through open submission and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and photographs.

NUMBER OF WORKS

Artists may submit TWO works no larger than 80 cm in any one direction (outer frame size) in any medium. Oversized works will not be accepted.

All works submitted for exhibition are considered by the RSA Council and Committee of Arrangements whose decision to accept or reject is final. No reproductions of any kind and no works that have already been exhibited at the RSA can be received without the express sanction of the Council. Applied art will not be accepted. No work made from ivory or in any way involving the use of ivory will be accepted.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Artists must register and submit their work online at www.regroyalscottishacademy.org

Applications must be completed before the Registration deadline – Wednesday 1 June 2016 @ 5pm. You will not be able to make changes to your online submission and new entries will not be allowed after this date. Please remember your log in details!

You can submit ONE image per work. Please ensure that you include good quality images that will do justice to your work and that adhere to the specifications noted on the website. We recommend JPG files of about 800 pixels wide and 1MB in size.

An Entry Fee (inclusive of VAT) is required for each work: Students £6 per work / Artists £10 per work or £18 for two works. Payment can be made online with a Paypal Account or by credit/debit card. Submissions will not be accepted without payment and refunds will not be offered for works not selected or handed in.

In line with other exhibiting societies please note there will also be a £10 administration fee for any works hung in the exhibition payable on Hand In days. Any works not included in the final selection will be refunded this admin fee.

SELECTION & HAND IN

Pre-selection results: Monday 13 June 2016. Please log into your account for results of work that has been pre-selected for the exhibition by the RSA Hanging and Selection Committee. In line with other exhibiting societies please note there will now be a £10 administration fee for any works hung in the exhibition payable on Hand In days. Any works not included in the final selection will be refunded this admin fee.

Hand in for pre-selected work: Friday 1 & Saturday 2 July, 10am – 4.30pm. Pre-selected works must be delivered to the South Door of the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh (facing the Scottish National Gallery on the Mound). Artists are not allowed to hand in different or substitute works to those that have been pre-selected. All wrapping and packing must be removed from the Academy. Work will not be received outwith the stated hours.

Final selection notification: Thursday 7 July. Artists will be sent an email notification to confirm whether or not their work is in the exhibition. If your work is not selected for the exhibition, please arrange for the uplift of your works on Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July, 10am – 4.30pm.

Labels: Labels will be posted to pre-selected artists and will also be available at the RSA on Hand-in day. Every work submitted must be accompanied by an RSA Label. Labels must be SECURELY attached to each work with string which is gaffer taped or stapled to the back/frame. Each label is in three sections, A, B and ARTIST RECEIPT, all of which must be clearly completed in BLOCK CAPITALS. A permanent label or other identification must also be affixed to the back of each work and, if possible, to each piece of sculpture, giving the artist's name, title of work and price. Failure to comply with these requirements in full can lead to rejection of the work.

COLLECTION OF WORK

Pre-selected work not hung in the exhibition: Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July, 10am – 4.30pm.

Unsold work after the exhibition closes: Friday 2 & Saturday 3 September 2016, 10-4.30pm.

No work, once placed, can be removed until the close of the Exhibition without a special order from the Council. We do not have any storage at the RSA so the artist must have their work uplifted on the dates given. Any works not collected will incur a storage fee to be paid by the artist. After 2 weeks the work will become property of the RSA and may subsequently be disposed of. By completing the online registration process, the artist accepts this condition as a binding agreement whereby ownership of the uncollected works is relinquished by him/her and transferred absolutely to the RSA.”

For Manifest's 2016/17 Exhibition Season

Artists, designers, illustrators, and other creative makers are invited to submit complete proposals for consideration in Manifest's upcoming 13th exhibition season which opens in late September.

On average, one-third of Manifest's exhibits are dedicated to solo/proposed exhibits. Solo exhibitors have included local, regional, and national artists from as far away as New York, San Francisco, and Hong Kong. It is important to our non-profit program that each of our seasons of free public exhibits consist of a balanced mix of solo and group thematic projects. The group shows provide diversity of approach, media, style, and geographic origin, while the solo exhibits provide a deeper insight into individual artists' vision.

Anyone can submit a proposal. Artists should bear in mind the need for a consistent and very strong body of work when submitting. Manifest is open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media, embracing the wide scope of visual arts. Our program sets out to survey, exhibit, and document excellent quality amongst all types of art. Our record through twelve seasons reveals the breadth of Manifest's reach across the spectrum of visual arts.

Just Shift sets the stage for creating, learning, and shifting with healthy plant based eating that fosters compassion and environmental respect.

The Royal Ulster Academy 135th Annual Exhibition will take place at the Ulster Museum, Belfast from the 14th October 2016 – 8th January 2017. With over 81,000 visitors in 2015, this long standing event aims to celebrate, enrich and expand contemporary approaches to the visual arts. 

The Annual Exhibition showcases works by members of the Academy and works selected through open submission and by invitation. Artists applying through the open submission process can enter a maximum of three works in any medium online, by 15th June 2016. From these entries the Selection Panel will draw up a shortlist of works for delivery to the Academy. The Annual Exhibition will be selected from these shortlisted works.

International Print Biennale Print Awards

The 2016 Print Awards are open to all British and international artists working with print in its widest interpretation, from traditional to contemporary print processes, included 2D, 3D, video, installation and site-specific work.

The Print Awards are the centrepiece of the International Print Biennale. Created by Northern Print in 2009, the Biennale showcases the broad spectrum of contemporary printmaking across the globe, through an extensive programme of exhibitions, events, activities and an international symposium, held across the North East of England. It is the only event on this scale for printmaking in the UK, and since its inception has established itself as the key event for printmakers in the international arts calendar.

The third edition of the Biennale’s Print Awards (2014) welcomed submissions from over 740 artists from 42 different countries. The exhibitions across 25 venues for International Print Biennale attracted over 130,000 visitors.

The Selectors

Entries for the 2016 Print Awards will be judged by a distinguished and experienced panel: renowned German artist Christiane Baumgartner; David Cleaton-Roberts, co-Director of Alan Cristea Gallery, London, one of Europe’s leading contemporary commercial galleries with an impressive publishing programme; Swedish-born Sune Nordgren, Founding Director of BALTIC, the Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England. The exhibition of selected works will be shown as part of the International Print Biennale across three galleries in Newcastle upon Tyne; Northern Print and The University Gallery at Northumbria Newcastle, and Vane. The exhibition opens on 16th September and runs until 30 October 2016. The intention is to show a body of work from each selected artist giving a context to the works in the exhibition.

The three selectors have also chosen one artist each to exhibit their work at this year’s Biennale: these are Italian artist Marina Bindella (chosen by Christiane Baumgartner), UK-based Cornelia Parker OBE RA (chosen by David Cleaton-Roberts), and Danish-born Adam Saks (chosen by Sune Nordgren).

Prizes

The 2016 Print Awards comprise a range of residency, bursary and generous purchase prizes from high-profile institutions renowned within the printmaking world. These include the Bryan Robertson Trust Award (£4000), the Northern Print International Residency Prize, the Paupers Press Residency Prize, the Clifford Chance Purchase Prize, the Printmaking Today Prize and the V&A Print Prize. These opportunities have a major impact on artists and their working practice, not only financially, but also in terms of increased profile, leading to new opportunities to sell, show, and develop their work.

The Artraker Biennial Awards are for contemporary artists / organisations that shape how people and organisations understand, engage and respond to violent conflicts and its effects. Artraker is interested in the significance of the contribution of the artist to change and the co-creation of experiences of freedom and hope in the midst of conflict. In 2016 Artraker will offer three Awards of GBP2500 each for completed work or work that can be further developed.

The three award winners and artists/organisations that made it to the final round of Jury deliberations will be invited to join the Artraker network (“the Artrakers”). The works of the award winners and up to six runners-up will be shown at the Art of Peace Exhibitions in London and Malta in early 2017. Announcements of the artists selected to join the Artrakers network will be made during the last quarter of 2016.  The Award winners will be announced during the Art of Peace Exhibitions in London and Malta in early 2017.

Submissions will be considered in relation to three award categories:

The Artraker Award for Challenging the Narrative This award is for art that challenges dominant narratives on violence and peace, and/or enables a different and deeper understanding to be gained on issues pertaining to violence, conflict, upheaval, change, and peace.  

The Artaker Award for Healing the Void This award is for art that promotes inclusion, reveals how space excludes and marginalises, and poses questions about how our societies are constructed and managed to either heal and create community, or divide, wound, and alienate.

The Imagine Peace! Artraker Award This award is for art that helps leaders at different levels imagine new pathways to peace and alternatives to violence. It is for art that stimulates creativity in leadership, helps foster or encourage visionary leadership, and contributes insight into imagining new ways of radically altering the dynamics that lead to violence.

Entries are judged by an international panel of experts from disciplines of arts, conflict, culture, politics and peace. They look for experimentation and engagement, audacity, change and capacity to inspire.

The Artraker Biennial Awards Jury for 2016 includes: Saskia Fernando (Curator, Saskia Fernando Gallery, Sri Lanka), Roger Graef (Filmmaker, United Kingdom and USA), Alexandra Handal (Artist, Member of the Artrakers, Palestine), Andrew Jack (Journalist, Financial Times, United Kingdom), Manali Jagtap (Artraker Founder, Malta), Patrick Kabanda (Writer, Musikaba and World Bank, Uganda), Susan Richards (Author, United Kingdom) and Marina Wallace (Curator, Artakt, United Kingdom).

In connection with the three year Transart Triennale research projects, Transart Institute is pleased to announce two new Scholarships for candidates with a demonstrated history of working with Socially Engaged Practices and whose project proposal for the MFA program would follow this trajectory. Proposed projects will resonate with Transart research areas: Identity; Exile; Role of Art in Peace and Mediation; Space In Between; International Diaspora, Post-Nationalism and Post-Colonialism; Home; Temporary Architecture; Cultural Engagement through Food; Foreignness, Otherness and the Uncanny; or Publicness, Collaboration and the Social and this current triennale theme, The Imperceptible Self.

Transart Triennale 2016

The Transart Triennale–initiated in 2013–brings together exhibitions and events, concerts and discussion groups, symposia, seminars and workshops, performances and screenings, critiques and tours and multi-author book launches.

2016 marks the second iteration of the triennale which began in New York in January and continues August 5th-7th in Berlin, engaging the theme The Imperceptible Self.

Transart Triennale 2016 will be followed by a dedicated issue of ELSE journal including documentation, reviews and responses to the triennale projects and themes.

The MFA Creative Practice is a student-centered, project oriented program which fosters independent thinking, risk-taking and the creation of an informed and sustainable art praxis. The program is tailored to suit the needs of working artists with summer residencies in Berlin, winter residencies in New York and one-on-one advisement during the academic year, wherever students work and live. Students are free to pursue work in any art-related genre and to create their own course of study, working independently and with the support of self-chosen studio and research advisors. Short periods of intensive residency permit students to continue with their professional work and keep a balanced personal life while participating in the program.

The PhD Creative Practice is a low-residency three year program in which the creative work is the research.

Joya: international writers’ summer residency

Joya: international writers’ summer residency

The Joya: international writers’ residency offers sublime peace and tranquility and a supportive environment in an area of outstanding natural beauty. High in the Andalucían sierras the residency is based at an ‘off-grid’ eco-retreat and almond farm in the heart of a 22,000 hectare natural park.

The Joya: international writers residency, along with Joya: AiR (artist in residence) is part of the non-profit arts led field research center, Joya: arte + ecología. This is a trans-disciplinary organisation that institutes seminars, creates art/science collaborations, promotes artists, runs courses, works with Universities in Spain and the UK and curates exhibitions within Europe.

Duration of residency

The ‘open call’ asks for submissions by May the 14th 2016 and is for the summer period of June, July and August 2016.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance

The residency offers opportunities to writers, poets, playwrights, essayists and composers and can host up to six creatives at any one time.

Primarily we are interested in creative or technical authors whose work manifests a discourse with the environment and sustainability. However we have a wide range of interests and would accept all genres of writing.

Accommodation

Each accepted applicant has full board, their own room to sleep and work with attached bathroom, as well as access to all areas around the estate.

Fees and support

The Joya: arte + ecología writers residency has a fee of €300 per week + tax (10%). This covers the cost of accommodation, wood for heating, water and all meals. It also includes collection from our nearest transport hub, Vélez Rubio.

Accompanying friends and family are welcome subject to the contribution of the same outgoing fees as the resident artist (above).

Expectations towards the artist


Writers participating in the residency program are invited to talk about their work to other participants and residents’ although this is not obligatory.

We ask applicants to provide us with their name and email address along with their website and/or three mentions on the internet to where their work/reviews or references to their writing can be seen. Applications must be submitted via the Joya: arte + ecología website.

Review:

'The Joya: arte + ecología writers residency is based at Cortijada Los Gázquez and it is the perfect retreat. The founders along with everyone else at ‘Joya' have created just the right atmosphere. It’s a friendly and supportive environment and, at the end of your day’s work, there’s always a fabulous meal and great company. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you’re free of everyday distractions and interruptions. I loved the atmosphere within the farmhouse and there are many places within easy walking distance to find inspiration. My own daily walks along the dry riverbeds in the area encouraged the close observation that’s important in my writing.
