Griffin Gallery calls for entries for the fifth edition of the Griffin Art Prize, a London residency and exhibition award for painting and drawing. Open to UK based artists graduated since 2009.

Designed to have a meaningful impact on the career of one emerging artist, the Griffin Art Prize provides time, accommodation, space and materials from supporting fine art brands Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris to create work for an Open Studio event above Griffin Gallery, London.

The judges for the Griffin Art Prize 2016 are: Serpentine Galleries exhibitions curator Rebecca Lewin, Lindéngruppen owner and chairman, Jenny Lindén Urnes, Griffin Gallery chief curator Becca Pelly-Fry, artist Vicki Wright.

The judges will be looking for excellence and innovation in painting and drawing. Twelve long listed artists for this year’s Prize will be announced in September and have their work featured on www.griffingallery.co.uk/GAP2016 . The judges will then select six short-listed artists to exhibit in a group show in November 2016 at Griffin Gallery, a high profile showcase opportunity visited by collectors, curators and other art world professionals.

The overall winner will be awarded a three month residency in the Studio Building, London W11 to develop new work culminating in an Open Studio event in April 2017. The residency includes: exclusive use of a spacious (32m sq.) studio, a self-contained apartment from ACAVA at 62, Hetley Road, London W12 8BB, www.acava.org/studios/building/hetley-road-studios a mentoring programme from a selected arts professional and materials of choice from supporting fine art brands Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris.

Studio 104: The whole of this single 571 sq ft studio is to be shared on an experimental time-share/co-working model, in order to maximise the use of the space and keep costs low. Studio is tidy and well organised – separated into two areas:

Area 1. Ply panelled clean computer/drawing room. Insulated floor. Half of this space is currently available for fixed sole use. Would suit someone who wants a permanent fixed desk-based practice with 24hr access, and additional access to main studio/workshop.

Area 2. Shared main studio – with cutting bench, 4ft x 8ft moveable worktable,and two large (4.8m wide x 3m heigh) walls for hanging/photographing. All of this space is arranged to be flexible, and to be shared on a cooperative or timeshare basis. Sole use of the main space can be negotiated on an hourly/daily/weekly/monthly basis. Use of tools inclusive.

Price depends on requirements, and balance of users. E.g:
– Large permanent desk space area, with storage, plus shared use of main studio: £350 to £400 a month.

AICAD Studio Practice Residency

AICAD Studio Practice Residency

The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) is offering a Studio Practice Residency for non-student working artists to develop, refine, or challenge their artistic practice in dialog with a chosen mentor. This residency will be a studio intensive mentorship program held at the AICAD facility in DUMBO, Brooklyn from May 6th – August 30th, 2016 (approx.).

Visual artist and critic William Powhida, will lead the Studio Practice Residency. Accepted participants will work with mentors to be determined.

Past mentors have included: Paddy Johnson (ArtFCity), Ben Davis (Artnet), Letha Wilson, Christopher K. Ho, Carolyn Salas, Jules de Balincourt, and Adam Parker Smith, among others. The Residency also offers monthly professional development seminars with arts professionals including former Sotheby's Institute professor Amy Whitaker to help artists build more sustainable and self-sufficient studio practices through financial planning, marketing, and goal setting.

The Residency runs concurrently with the AICAD New York Studio Residency Program (NYSRP), a 16-credit studio program for undergraduate art students from across the US and Canada. AICAD Studio Practice residents may attend the NYSRP's regular visiting artist/critic series and will have 24hr access to its facilities including an individual 12' x 8' studio, wood shop, wi-fi, kitchen, computer lab, and projection room which also provides additional shared work space.

The AICAD Studio Practice Residency is a non-credit, fee-based program. The total 4 month program cost is $3,750 ($1,000 deposit and $917 per month for 3 months) with a discount available for alumni of AICAD member schools at $3400 ($1000 deposit and $800 per month). The $1,000 deposit is due by April 15th, 2016, and the remaining balance must be paid in monthly installments by the 1st day of each month, with the last installment due on August 1st, 2016.

The cost of the program covers the studio rental, visiting artist and critic mentor stipends, monthly workshop fees and facility/administrative costs. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a minimum of a year of professional activity outside of any degree-granting program.

Overview and Studios

The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis of available of affordable space for artists living and working in New York City. The program provides six eligible artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space accessible 24/7 and a $5,000 fellowship (dependent on funding). The program runs for an eleven-month period from June to May. The studios are located on the lower level of our building at 92 Plymouth Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn and range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. The program does not provide living space. 

 

Production Facilities

Artists also have access to shared facilities that include: a state-of-the-art digital production lab, including a set of 27" iMac workstations professionally configured for video and graphics editing, calibrated video monitors, a 3D-capable HD projector, surround-sound monitor speakers, flatbed scanners, a wide-format photo printer, a color laser printer and wireless internet access; a fabrication shop including table saw, grinder, drill press, welding equipment, and hand tools; and a shared kitchen/lounge area. Our staff is on-hand to provide technical support and to respond to the studio needs of our resident artists.

 

Special Notes

Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio. Please also note that due to the possibility of flooding in our basement studios, we strongly recommend that artists keep anything valuable off the floor at all times; therefore artists accustomed to working on the floor should think carefully about whether our studios will meet their needs.

Program Eligibility

All applicants must be United States citizens or legal Permanent Residents of the United States, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program, and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the 2016-17 Smack Mellon residency.

ABOUT EFA STUDIO PROGRAM
The EFA Studio Program was created to provide affordable studio space within a community of artists, facilitate career development, and promote public and critical exposure for our members. Members of the studio program are professional artists with a developed studio practice. Our members create work in wide range of media and artistic sensibilities creating a vibrant and diverse community of peers.

MEMBERSHIP
Membership is available to artists through an application and selection process. Members have a private studio for a period of up to two years at below market cost.

LOCATION
All studios are located in the EFA Center at 323 West 39th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan.
 
DESCRIPTION AND COST
Studios range in size from 200 to 440 square feet. Ceilings are 11 feet high. Membership fees vary according to the size and shape of the studio assigned to the artist, the studio's location in the building, and the artist's demonstrated financial need. Access to studios is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

ELIGIBILITY
Visual artists working in all forms of media are eligible. The program is designed for artists with a developed studio practice and career experience. Applicants cannot be in a college or university degree-granting program. Certain types of work cannot be accommodated for practical reasons, including large or heavy sculptures, some types of metal work, and work involving high noise levels or fire risk. Applications are judged solely on the quality of the work as presented. EFA does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation or marital status. Artists must be citizens of the United States, or must be legal U.S residents during their tenure.

Imaginarium: the Studio is situated in Port St. Francis, St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.  It is the working studio and gallery of artists and twin sisters Alvira and Alouette Ferreira.   Alvira and Alouette will be away on an art residency in Belgium during August to October and are making Imaginarium: the Studio available to other artists looking for an artist's break away during this three month period. 

The studio and accommodation is situated in the beautiful harbour in Port St. Francis. The inclusive price for the use of the studio and the apartment is €500/$570/£370 per week.   

Costs include self-catering apartment and an art studio with uncapped wifi. You are responsible for your our traveling costs, transport, food, and art supplies.  A second person sharing your accommodation but not using the studio can be accommodated at half price.  

Minimum stay of one month.  

Upon acceptance a 50% deposit for one month is required.

Queens Museum studio program

The Queens Museum is one of the only US museums to house a working studio program. In Fall 2013, an expansion doubling the Museum’s size included new artist studios in the north wing. We invite all artists to apply for a subsidized studio at the Museum, available for one year, with a possible extension for a second year.
 
In designating permanent real estate to the long-term development of new work on-site, as well as creating a community of artists, the Queens Museum aims to promote artists’ creative process and professional development. The Queens Museum Studio Program is one part of a suite of artists’ services funded by The Scherman Foundation's Katharine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund that also includes on-and offsite workshops and professional development for emerging artists. Please click here for more information.

WHO SHOULD APPLY? As a studio program within a museum, we encourage artists to apply who believe they might be able to contribute to the life of the organization. Participation can range from being in your studio during Queens Museum exhibition openings to organizing events for the public with the input of the Curatorial and Public Events departments. Please consider your availability and geographical location carefully, and apply only if you are confident you will use the studio 15 hours/week or more. If you can, we encourage you to visit and familiarize yourself with the Museum before you apply.
 
SELECTION PROCESS: Selections will be made by Queens Museum staff and two distinguished outside professionals: one curator and one artist. This jury will select a small number of finalists who will then be interviewed in person or via Skype for a final decision.
 
THE STUDIOS: Artists have access to their studios from 6:00 am to midnight. Because the studios are within the Museum, there can be no use of toxic or combustible materials. There is limited access to a woodshop.
 
COMMUNITY AND CAREER: We ask all studio artists to attend a monthly meeting to which everyone can bring ideas, questions, and interesting visitors. There are six scheduled studio visits a year, suggested by artists. Open studios are scheduled to coincide with exhibition openings at the Queens Museum.
