AICAD Studio Practice Residency

The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) is offering a Studio Practice Residency for non-student working artists to develop, refine, or challenge their artistic practice in dialog with a chosen mentor. This residency will be a studio intensive mentorship program held at the AICAD facility in DUMBO, Brooklyn from May 6th – August 30th, 2016 (approx.).
Visual artist and critic William Powhida, will lead the Studio Practice Residency. Accepted participants will work with mentors to be determined.
Past mentors have included: Paddy Johnson (ArtFCity), Ben Davis (Artnet), Letha Wilson, Christopher K. Ho, Carolyn Salas, Jules de Balincourt, and Adam Parker Smith, among others. The Residency also offers monthly professional development seminars with arts professionals including former Sotheby's Institute professor Amy Whitaker to help artists build more sustainable and self-sufficient studio practices through financial planning, marketing, and goal setting.
The Residency runs concurrently with the AICAD New York Studio Residency Program (NYSRP), a 16-credit studio program for undergraduate art students from across the US and Canada. AICAD Studio Practice residents may attend the NYSRP's regular visiting artist/critic series and will have 24hr access to its facilities including an individual 12' x 8' studio, wood shop, wi-fi, kitchen, computer lab, and projection room which also provides additional shared work space.
The AICAD Studio Practice Residency is a non-credit, fee-based program. The total 4 month program cost is $3,750 ($1,000 deposit and $917 per month for 3 months) with a discount available for alumni of AICAD member schools at $3400 ($1000 deposit and $800 per month). The $1,000 deposit is due by April 15th, 2016, and the remaining balance must be paid in monthly installments by the 1st day of each month, with the last installment due on August 1st, 2016.
The cost of the program covers the studio rental, visiting artist and critic mentor stipends, monthly workshop fees and facility/administrative costs. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a minimum of a year of professional activity outside of any degree-granting program.
