Explore visual arts and performance in Bratislava!
Our goal is first and foremost to provide a high quality of teaching. We do not throw the famous names to catch your attention, we invite guests who most importantly can offer something valuable to enrich the process.

Participants are meant to take up the challenge to study the given topic in many possible ways. During these Studies we will be confronted with the term „NEIGHBOURHOOD”, where site-specific, long durational performances and interactive forms of art-making are in the focus of how to adjust and enhance an artistic ephemeral concept of performative art.

We offer the opportunity to research, discover and explore a specific area of Bratislava. The area is situated at the periphery of the “Old Town” – surrounding the Contemporary Cultural Centre A4 – and is a mix of different kinds of architecture, calm areas, markets and empty spots between buildings, while hidden behind the main train station and the busy street Sancova. This Neighbourhood, with its diverse possibilities, will be the subject of the #49 study program.

The challenge of the researchers will be the questions of how to access private and public space in this area and how far it is possible to include the local people in the PAS activities. Neighbourhood is thus meant as a metaphor for how we react to what surrounds us rather than using the space for individual work.

The Studies will be very intense, filled with practical and theoretical exercises and tasks.
Following to the topic of PAS #49 we will research different performance art practices and create an experimental setting in which we will work towards an individual and/or collective performance work which will be presented as part of the Nomadic Performance Art Festival 2016: Neighbourhood and Territory, in the public realm of the quarter.

Our program is never planned in advance with exact steps. We adjust it to the group dynamics, challenges of an individual and needs that pop up. Observing the process is the key to achieve high quality of teaching enriched by our experience and ever – expanding great collection of tasks.

Enter our juried competition for digital art and photography. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.

The competition is international, open to all geographical locations. The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44×60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery. The exhibit will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24×36 inches to be included in the winners’ exhibits.

Standpoint Futures is a residency programme for visual artists, providing high calibre, tailored opportunities for discussion and interaction with the London art world. Applications are invited for the 2017 programme.

Each residency is 6 weeks long, working at new residency partners Chisenhale Studios in Bow, London E3. Standpoint Futures awards artists a free studio and accommodation during their residency, all advisor and mentoring meetings, plus a contribution to expenses of £100 per week.

The residencies will run from mid January – July 2017.

Proposals to exhibit at West Space across 2017 are now open.

For the first time in West Space’s history, we are very pleased to announce that we will be paying artist fees to all exhibiting artists in our program from 2017.

West Space encourages a diversity of work that contributes to broad contemporary art concerns: aesthetic, social, political and material. We aim to respond in a timely and inclusive way to current tendencies in international contemporary art, but we also take responsibility in leading discussion on issues that relate to our local context. We actively seek out experimentation, risk and innovation as an objective of the artistic program.

Selected artists and curators work closely with West Space staff to develop their exhibition project, receiving critical feedback as well as practical support. We welcome proposals by emerging and established practitioners and applications for solo, collaborative or group exhibitions. Proposals can be submitted for West Space’s Front Space, Gallery 1, Gallery 2 and Back Space. Artists exhibiting in Gallery 1 and 2 will receive $900, and artists exhibiting in the Front Space and Back Space will receive $500. Our artist fee structure has been determined by the size of our gallery spaces.

Applications close Friday 19th August, midnight AEST. Please note: West Space now has 1 open call programming round per year.

2017’s program will be our last year at our current address. Since moving to 225 Bourke St in 2011 West Space's artistic program has radically expanded, allowing the artists we work with to realise more ambitious projects. Call for artist in residence: Nine Elms On the South Bank

Artist Residency as part of TATE EXCHANGE
 with Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall, Gasworks and Pump House Gallery
– a Nine Elms district consortia.

We are looking for an artist or arts collective to work with us in a unique opportunity to create new work with three local art organisations and Tate Modern. The artist residency project will be the first in our three year partnership programme for Tate Exchange at Tate Modern. Artists must be interested in socially engaged practice and committed to working with young people at all three galleries. The residency runs over six months from September 2016 – March 2017, with the artist expected to produce a maximum of two project outcomes in each of the three galleries and one final shared publically accessible outcome at Tate Exchange,  Tate Modern on 10th March 2017.
 
The fee is £6000 inclusive of vat and expenses plus a production budget of up to £5000.
 
Together these galleries and Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership will commission an artist or art collective to develop and deliver a series of innovative participatory projects that engages with 14-25 year olds to explore what it means to ‘exchange’. The artist will work closely with the partners to develop a maximum of two outcomes at each partner gallery and a final shared outcome at Tate Modern as part of the Tate Exchange Programme March 2017.
 
We are seeking proposals that can respond to the histories of the partners and the story of our geographical area (Battersea, Nine Elms and Vauxhall), as it undergoes a major transformation – creating new audiences and proactively engaging with the current audiences of these spaces
 
Proposals are welcomed in any medium: they can be focussed online or offline, they could be performance based or object based. The artist led participation group is to be formed by the artist supported by the combined contacts and networks of the partnership. The brief is intentionally open in order to be artist led. The artist’s fee for the project will be £6000 inclusive of all expenses, plus a small production budget of up to £5000, to be agreed by the Consortia.

Submission Procedure

• Artists are to submit by email a one page proposal outlining their project; this should include a rough budget, project aims and general themes.

This should be submitted to Anne Mullins Curator Arts and Culture, Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership on behalf of the Consortia at the following address: [email protected]  by 10am 5th September 2016.

N.B. please note that at this first stage no dialogue with potential artists/art collectives will be entered into by any of the galleries involved. However, interested artists are of course free to visit and research these public spaces as part of the development of their initial proposals.

A small honorarium of £500 will be paid to the maximum of three shortlisted artists selected by the Shortlisting Panel to cover their studio and R&D costs. All shortlisted artists will have access to the three galleries involved in the Nine Elms Vauxhall Tate Exchange programme and the Tate Exchange floor at Tate Modern.
• The selected artist will be informed on 21st September 2016 with the artist expected to make an immediate start on the project.
• The successful artist will be contracted by Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership.

Studio practice residents will have 24hr access to its facilities including an individual 12’ x 8’ studio, wood shop, wi-fi, kitchen, computer lab, and projection room which also provides additional shared work space. The AICAD (Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design) Studio Practice Residency is a non-credit, fee-based program. The total four month program cost is $3,750 (NON-REFUNDABLE $1,000 deposit and $917 per month for three months) with a discount available for alumni of AICAD member schools/affiliates at $3,400 (NON_REFUNDABLE $1,000 deposit and $800 per month). The NON-REFUNDABLE $1,000 deposit is due by August 31st, 2016, and the remaining balance must be paid in monthly installments by the 1st day of each month, with the last installment due on December 1st, 2016.

The cost of the program covers the studio rental, visiting artist and critic mentor stipends, monthly workshop fees and facility/administrative costs. Organized in conjunction with the acclaimed Porn FilmFestival Berlin, now in its 11th year, SomoS Art House is calling for submissions for an open call for performative projects and ephemeral installations as critical responses to the notions of fantasy, consumption of images, and the spectatorship and voyeurism of sexuality in mediated society.

Some questions to consider:
How do we imagine our own paradise? Can we create it according to our private fantasy, according to our own intimate needs? Or can we enter one, that is offered to us, one that already exists? Can we negotiate or adapt our own paradise? Can it be a public paradise, a democratic one, open for all? Do we want to share it, let others in?

This topic is partially inspired as a response to the recent resurgence in the popularity of virtual reality. What is it that compels people to leave reality behind and enter a virtual reality? What would they like to find in this reality, or what is it that is missing in our shared reality? Why do people want to isolate themselves in their own private reality?

We are not so much interested in the technical or technological aspect of virtual reality, but rather an exploration of the deeper inclination for people to shape and define their own distinctive versions of reality or to create ways, places, or times in which they can escape from reality. Sensorial experiences, interactivity vs performative isolation, and modified realities through immersion or dissociation, are all topics that come to mind when we discuss our instinct to create our own personal or custom paradises.

Contributions should include detailed plans for ephemeral and ethereal works such as performance, participatory elements, with ambient characteristics such as temporary installations and other time-based works.

Selected artists/performers will be invited to participate in an exhibition at SomoS Art House in Berlin that will take place from October 25th to October 30th, 2016, in conjunction with the 11th Porn FilmFestival Berlin.

Artists/Performers must be available in Berlin during this period.
Artists/Performers will be expected to engage audiences with a short version of their project on the opening evening on the 25th of October and prepare a longer duration piece to take place during opening hours of 2-7pm on one of the five subsequent exhibition days (26–30 October).

RECLAIMING THE POTENTIALITY OF AFFECTION

How to rethink the artist's gesture today?
The residential module is based on this: to reclaim the artist's role as a narrator of a place, a story or an experience recognizing the potential of it and exploring it with affection and astonishment; to renew the artist's gesture in relation to a new exchange with the field of investigation and cultivation. Rethinking the encounter with the other as a moment of stimulation also means to recover the question about identity of art without presuming to find an answer.

The module will take place in two specific places, both houses and cultural spaces: Cittadellarte in Biella (IT), founded by Michelangelo Pistoletto in 1998, and Art House in Shkodër (AL), started by Adrian Paci in 2015, with a common desire to restart a profound dialogue with the experience of life and thought.
 
MENTOR

Adrian Paci is an Albanian visual artist. He studied painting at the Academy of Art of Tirana. In 1997 he moved to Milan where he lives and works. Throughout his career he held numerous solo shows in various international institutions. Amongst the last group shows Paci’s work has been featured in the International Architecture Exhibition at “La Biennale di Venezia” (2014); the “International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia” (1999 and 2005); in the “15th Biennale of Sydney” (2006). His works are shown in numerous public and private collections. A consistent part of his artistic research is dedicated to his homeland. In his work, Paci explores the boundaries between the personal and the political as well as the identities and rituals that are forged along those borders. Adrian Paci teaches painting at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti NABA, Milan. He has been a teaching art classes at Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti Bergamo, 2002-2006, IUAV, Venice 2003-2015 and has been giving lectures and workshops in many universities, art academies and institutions in different countries. In 2015 Paci founded “Art House”, bringing to his home town, Shkodër, the contribution of international personalities of the arts and culture.

ELAPSING TIME IN EXPANDED ARTWORK: PRACTICES OF THE UNCONSCIOUS THROUGH MEANS OF ACTIVISM

What is the relationship between emotion and activism?
Focusing on the relationship between emotion and activism, this one-week module looks at how practices of listening and wellbeing enhance collective sensibility within groups.
Spanish artist Núria Güell will not only be a guest on the module but also the initiator of an elapsed time-frame of research in which participants will deeply map the social and political implications of her recent work, La Feria de las Floras (2015).
This workshop ultimately aims at widening the horizon of on-going debates around the relationship between artistic practices and social movements by performing and embodying emotionality in a temporary and communal environment. It will touch upon (but not be limited to) concepts such as emancipation, female subjectivity, performance and protest.


MENTOR

Aria Spinelli is an independent curator and researcher, currently a PhD Candidate at Loughborough University with a project on curatorial practice and the social imaginary. Her primary area of research is investigating the relationship between art and activism. Her research suggests that the ‘assembly’, as both a curatorial format and exhibition display, will possibly activate forms of agonistic politics that can potentially affect the social imaginary necessary for capitalist reproduction. She holds a BA and a MA in Art History, Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies.
Since 2009 she acted as curator at “Isola Art Center”, an open platform of experimentation for contemporary art that has developed in the Isola neighbourhood in Milan, Italy. In 2009, she also founded the art and curatorial collective “Radical Intention” and created long-term research projects on socio-political issues related to art and its practices. Recent projects include: Decompression Gathering Summer Camp with Amy Franceschini (Corniolo Art Platform, FI, Italy); FLOAT residency at Luminary Art Centre, St. Louis (MO, USA); Marfa Dialogues, Pulitzer Art Foundation, St. Louis (MO, USA); Collateral Effects – Beyond a Radical Milan, Homesession, Fundació Tàpies, Sala d’art Jove Barcelona, Spain; Taking Positions-Identity Questioning Fare arte, Milan, Italy w/ACSL-Art and Cultural Studies Laboratory, Yerevan; Milano Radicale, Medionauta/Liceo artistico Caravaggio, Milan/Corniolo Florence, Italy.

CARVING OUT THE SPACES FOR OUR COMMONED LIFE: A TRAINING GROUND

What role do artists play in the creation of new mutualism economic systems?
The double-module “Carving Out the Spaces for Our Commoned Life: A Training Ground” takes different economic principles and workings at its core. In the two weeks we will explore whether we, as artists, designers or cultural practitioners can envision a novel mutually supportive economic ‘space’ for our lives and work. A daunting task, to which aid we will call some of the forerunners that have already started the transition. But equally a formidable challenge that demands we break down some of the assumptions and workings concerning the economy, delve into areas we usually experience as ‘outsiders’ and start re-creating them on our terms. Money, debt, insurance, time, services – to name a few.

The module consists of a five-day line of activities at Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto (Biella, from 14th to 18th of November, 2016), and a subsequent five-day line of activities at the Stoking House of City in the Making (Rotterdam, from 21st to 25th of November, 2016).
 
MENTORS

Ana Džokić, Erik Jutten, Marc Neelen and Piet Vollaard are the initiators of City in the Making, an association opening abandoned (economically “toxic”) real-estate as a site to produce a new kind of economic and cultural reality. Ana and Marc are heading the practice STEALTH.unlimited, connecting visual arts, urban research, spatial interventions and cultural activism, like in the fiction-based project Once Upon a Future (Bordeaux) and Disassemble, a community based intervention (Gothenburg). Piet Vollaard is an architect, writer and cultural producer. He has been the initiator and 18 years the principal of ArchiNed, since 2013 runs the no-budget nomadic gallery 30KUUB, he authored a range of books on architecture. Erik Jutten studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts (The Hague), and has since been active as a driving force enabling projects and artworks to get realised in public space.
