Made in Mind is an  independent publishing project dedicated to the promotion of young contemporary visual art. It's  focus is  to provide  visibility to young art, particularly for lesser known visual artists to showcase their work to an international audience which includes  artists, galleries, museums, curators and others interested in art. The aim is to become bridge between the art world and artists. Visual artists of various media are encouraged to enter this juried competition to be included in next issue.

The 2016 Summer Salon is our second annual summer open-door exhibition and fundraiser for the gallery. We believe that open submission shows can be useful for artists, as they open the gallery's doors and bring in the work of a much larger section of artists than the gallery can present through its annual curatorial programme. We have tried to make the show fair to the artist by eschewing judging based on digital submissions and looking at the art itself when it is delivered. We have also included a refund policy, so that all artists whose work is not selected have their application fee refunded. Finally, and crucially, we approach the submissions not as self-appointed judges, but as curators, looking at everything as it comes in and working to curate from the available artworks, so that the selection happens naturally and organically and not based on any preconceived themes or notions. We curate collaboratively, with each member of our gallery team taking on different groups of work and sections of the gallery, once we collectively separate the artworks in ways in which we think they respond to each other, or say something about the way art is made or the kind of dialogues we see them as being part of. There is still room within this method for our personal views and understanding as curators and artists and therefore for subjectivity, but it is intended as an objective, sincere and broad approach.

CHARLIE SMITH LONDON is pleased to announce its fifth edition of the annual juried exhibition Anthology.

Selected and curated by internationally respected art world professionals, Anthology is a multi-disciplinary exhibition that reaches out democratically to artists worldwide. Presented at the CHARLIE SMITH LONDON gallery in Shoreditch, London, the exhibition will continue to be a key barometer of emerging and established talent, and will continue to provide opportunities to artists.

Consisting of ten finalists selected from all applicants, the exhibition will open 5 August 2016. A cash prize of £2,000 will be presented to one winner by CHARLIE SMITH LONDON. The winner will also be profiled on Artlyst.

WHICH LANGUAGE WILL I SPEAK TO YOU? COLLECTIVE VOICE AFTER THE END OF PROTEST

Which theoretical frame do we need to preserve as root in a new process of creation of a shared
language of mobilization? And how to use it? How can we formalize a language that has a capacity to be effective and “popular” without loosing the complexity inherent in the global context? How can the artist and the artistic approach be relevant in the co-construction of such a language?
The module is a shared moment of research and practices on strategies of taking and giving voice in the public and political sphere, starting from some urgent questions in the construction (as linguistic agent) of a collective consciousness. These questions are the starting point to re-imagine the script, the storyline and the ways of thinking about activism, social change and protest.

MENTOR
Luigi Coppola is an Italian artist who works within the fields of performance, video and public art projects. Through his research he develops social choreographies as democratic models, partecipative and collaborative practices, politically motivated actions, bringing to front a notion of art practice as mise en forme of political, economic, social issues and claims. He is currently involved in a project aiming at the common reorganization of the political, agricultural and economic systems of a entire village in the south of Italy and in long term projects on “political chorality” in different places in Europe. He created projects, performances, projects and exhibitions in different international contexts such as “1st Democracy Biennale”, Turin; Nomas Foundation, Rome; Kadist Art Foundation, Paris; Galleria Lungomare (in the frame of “Manifesta 7” and Lungomare Gasthaus). He was with Michelangelo Pistoletto joint artistic curator of the “Urban Art Biennale” in Bordeaux and was part of the knowledge circle “Art in Society” directed by Pascal Gielen at the Fontys University.

PERSONAL IMAGINARY MUSEUM

Could a museum be imaginary and personal? Could a flea market be perceived as a museum?
The module investigates the nature of traditional museums in relation with the idea of a personal imaginary museum. A personal imaginary museum may have exclusive values, can be secret, intimate or even unreal.
The workshop explores the notion of ‘Personal Imaginary Museum’ in art, architecture, history, literature and cinema. It investigates the distinctions between collection, archive and museum. It raises questions such as: could a flea market be perceived as a museum?
It proposes different modes of thinking of Museums through the ‘Project Methodology’, a method conceived by Muntadas as a temporal structure of development of his projects.

MENTOR
Antoni Muntadas is a Spanish artist. He has lived in New York since 1971. His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, as well as channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. He works on projects in different media such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations. Since 1995, Muntadas has grouped together a set of works and projects titled On Translation. Their content, dimensions and materials are highly diverse, and they all focus on the author’s personal experience and artistic activity in numerous countries over a period of thirty years. By grouping such works together under this epigraph, Muntadas places them within a body of experience and concrete concerns regarding communication, the culture of our times and the role of the artist and art in contemporary society.

Practicing the Object.
Give me an (art)object so I can find my position and continue to move

Could an art object ethically contribute to the composition of the public space and to the definition of single and collective identities?
The module intends art as the device and the terrain where autobiographical identity negotiates its position and relation with others, where borders incessantly touch, fuse, intertwine and separate.
In practicing the diverse possibilities of the art object (through case studies, experiments, analyses and production) mentor and participants will be working – in a peer-to-peer relation – on the open definition of singular and collective identities that are shaped in a continuous collision of borders between art and spectator.
The (art)object is considered as a possibility of an ethical participation to the construction of a public space, and in this sense the experience at Cittadellarte-Pistoletto Foundation will give the group a very unique context of historical density and future development as art citizens. The final experience – a space, a performance, journal/log, a record or everything all together – will register the seismographic activity and relations between (art)objects and subjects involved.

MENTOR
Daria Filardo is an art historian and independent curator based in Florence. Her curatorial practice focuses on the research of an autobiographical position which is built in experience. She is Professor of Contemporary Practices at the SACI Master Program in Studio Art in Florence and tutor of the MFA students' artistic practice. She also teaches Visual Art and coordinates the Final Project at the Master course of IED, Florence.

Here lie scenes and objects from another point in time. Whether they are from the past or the future is not evident. Is this the aftermath of the un-checked human impact on the Earth? Some dystopian premonition? A warning? Is this Earth? There is what appears to be a time machine, or a space craft, it's not clear. These objects may be the archive of findings brought 'back' from it's travels, or perhaps we are standing at it's final destination, in a place or time distant to our own.

The planet Venus has been a constant source of inspiration to mankind throughout history; both mythical and scientific. It has kept it’s mystery with it’s thick covering of cloud that could not be penetrated by telescope. Up to the 1960's before the Venera missions of Soviet Russia, visions of Venus's surface in both popular and scientific communities ranged from Carboniferous swamplands to arid deserts, to vast oceans of carbonated water. In earlier 20th century England, Christian Victorians wondered if there were also people there, and if so, had Christ visited, and suffered for their sins too? All of these romances were brought to an end when the first probe landed and sent back the message: Venus is hell. Those thick clouds were not raining seltzer, but sulphuric acid. The atmosphere was so dense, and the surface temperatures so hot, that the probe was destroyed within the hour.

Venus has commonly been called Earth's twin. Relatively speaking in it's size, mass and gravity, Venus has much in common with Earth. In spite of it's being closer to the Sun, Venus would not be significantly hotter than the Earth due to those thick clouds reflecting much of the Sun's heat. Venus's scorching temperature and uninhabitable terrain actually come from a runaway greenhouse effect.

In the face of what we now know about the threats of global warming on our own planet, Griffith's character's supposition could be applied to Earth today, rather than a mythical Venus of the past. Could Venus be a vision of Earth's distant future, left unchecked? Venus: our evil twin; a stark warning agains the dangers of neglecting our better judgement for the sake of short-term convenience.

The Brief

After Eden will be an experimental exhibition based on the sci-fi-esque concept of Venus as Earth's future and Earth as Venus' past. The show has a subtext of global climate issues and the human relationship with the natural world.

Artists are asked to submit new or recent work that they feel reflects or expands dialogue with these subjects.

After Eden will exhibit in Budapest at the end of August during the International Degrowth Conference. More details will be available closer to the submission deadline. Griffin Gallery calls for entries for the fifth edition of the Griffin Art Prize, a London residency and exhibition award for painting and drawing. Open to UK based artists graduated since 2009.

Designed to have a meaningful impact on the career of one emerging artist, the Griffin Art Prize provides time, accommodation, space and materials from supporting fine art brands Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris to create work for an Open Studio event above Griffin Gallery, London.

The judges for the Griffin Art Prize 2016 are: Serpentine Galleries exhibitions curator Rebecca Lewin, Lindéngruppen owner and chairman, Jenny Lindén Urnes, Griffin Gallery head curator Becca Pelly-Fry, artist Vicky Wright.

The judges will be looking for excellence and innovation in painting and drawing. Twelve long listed artists for this year’s Prize will be announced in September and have their work featured on www.griffingallery.co.uk/GAP2016 . The judges will then select six short-listed artists to exhibit in a group show in November 2016 at Griffin Gallery, a high profile showcase opportunity visited by collectors, curators and other art world professionals.

The overall winner will be awarded a three month residency in the Studio Building, London W11 to develop new work culminating in an Open Studio event in April 2017. The residency includes: exclusive use of a spacious (32m sq.) studio, a self-contained apartment from ACAVA at 62, Hetley Road, London W12 8BB, www.acava.org/studios/building/hetley-road-studios a mentoring programme from a selected arts professional and materials of choice from supporting fine art brands Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris.

Rebecca Lewin is Exhibitions Curator at Serpentine Galleries, London, where she has curated shows including DAS INSTITUT, Michael Craig-Martin, Duane Hanson, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Cerith Wyn Evans, Ed Atkins, Martino Gamper and Wael Shawky. She has worked on outdoor commissions by Michael Craig-Martin and Bertrand Lavier and the 2013 Serpentine Pavilion by Sou Fujimoto. She has also produced independent exhibitions, including the forthcoming 'A Partition' at Cell Project Space (2016), ‘The Palace of Green Porcelain’ at Breese Little Gallery (2013) and ‘Pertaining to things natural…’ at the Chelsea Physic Garden (2012). Her essay on the collaborative practice of DAS INSTITUT has just been published by the Serpentine Galleries and Koenig books.

Jenny Lindén Urnes is the owner and Chairman of Lindéngruppen, a family business based in Sweden, focusing on long-term development of industrial companies, including Winsor & Newton and Liquitex. Jenny is the Chairman of the Färgfabriken Foundation, a centre for contemporary art and architecture in Stockholm. With a passionate interest in art, she also chairs the jury for the Beckers Art Award. Established in 1987, this award has been given to several of Sweden's most innovative and exciting young artists.

Becca Pelly-Fry is Head Curator for ColArt International. Becca took up post as Griffin Gallery Director in January 2013, and has since curated the majority of the exhibitions at the gallery including Water + Colour, Drawing into Sculpture, Two Truths, Selective Memories, and PERFECTIoNISM (Parts I and II). Becca originally trained as a sculptor at Northumbria University; after graduating she began her curatorial career as gallery manager and curator at The Biscuit Factory Gallery in Newcastle. Her career path then took a side step into public sector arts management, working as Operations and Events Manager for Durham City Arts, followed by three years as Arts Development Officer at Kensington & Chelsea Council and a similar role at Camden Council.  Becca is now Head Curator for ColArt International, with responsibility for Directorship of Griffin Gallery and The Fine Art Collective global education programme, and advising the global Winsor & Newton and Liquitex teams on working with artists worldwide.  Becca also sits on the selection panel for the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, which supports emerging British artists and craftspeople.

Vicky Wright completed her MA Fine Art at Goldsmiths in 2008. Recent solo shows include: The Garments of the Dominators, Josh Lilley Gallery, London (2012); The Informants, Josh Lilley Gallery, London (2010).  group exhibitions include: John Moores painting prize 2007, Temporary Accommodation at the Whitechapel Gallery (2001),  The Hecklers, New Art Gallery Walsall, Walsall; Deception of the Eye, Special Effects in Contemporary Art, Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, Germany MUTAGEN, ASC Gallery, London (both 2013); The Dorian Project, Second Guest, New York (2012) and Making Familiar, Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin (2012).
