To celebrate the publication of Design Like You Give a Damn 2, by Architecture for Humanity founder Cameron Sinclair, we are inviting architects, designers, artists, students and other creative individuals to come up with a proposal for a small scale project, product or build that embodies the spirit of humanitarian design.

Architecture for Humanity London and Studio 54 Architecture are co-hosting a week long event on the theme of designing ‘like you give a damn’. We’re calling for ideas that will in some way improve the London experience.

It could be an idea for a public space installation, a community enterprise, an eco building, an ingenious object, or anything that demonstrates how design can be used to make Londoner’s lives better and happier.

So ideas on a postcard, please. All entries will be exhibited. Visitors can vote on their favourite. We will choose a few ideas to take to the next step.

The proposal can be text, a sketch or other visual representation. Think of an idea that could benefit London. Be bold. Be adventurous. Think big. Or small.

Submissions should be made using the A5 postcard template below. Alternatively, you can download the postcard template from ideasonapostcard.org.uk. Please print on 200 gsm card or heavier stock or mount onto card (not foamboard). If you would prefer to use a pre-printed blank card contact us at the email below.

The theme of the festival "Visual Poetry" is synchronous to the property of Perm being a "Library capital" of the Perm region in 2012. Artists will deploy the visual equivalents of poetry on a very long concrete fence.  Projects will focus on the expression of the poetic text - rhythm, structure and texture of the verse. Long stories for Perm will be consisted of a visual image of the text, of the relationship of artists to the verse, word, letter as to the image. The theme of the festival is a challenge for the participants, not only because the artistic projects should be formulated for extremely non- standard elongated horizontal format of concrete fences, encircling the industrial facilities in Perm, but also because the art projects will have to coexist and resist in spontaneous and aggressive in many ways graphic and font environment of the city (visual identity and navigation, outdoor advertisements, running lines, signs)

The festival is divided into two platforms. 

ARTIST-POET platform updates and sets a new scale of rich and varied traditions of visual poetry - from the pictographic and hieroglyphic writing, calligraphy, frieze compositions and ornaments, to the poetry albums, animated stories, riddles and visual stories in children's magazines (when replacing the words in the text to images) until the experiments of the modern art (Merz-Dadapoems, constructivist and pop art play with the font and image, concrete poetry of conceptualism, lettrism of postmodernism).  Especially for designers working in the field of typography the festival has a platform FORM OF STANZA where they will be able to demonstrate their skills and artistic talents, to show the meaning and give the energy to poetic lines of Russian poets. Poems dedicated to contemporary life in the city and its citizens "constructed" by designers, will not only be a transcription of poetic texts in visual language, artists will give a monumental scale to the rows of classical and modern Russian poetry, will make them proportionate to the public spaces of the city.  

The organizers will pay for participants' travel, accommodation and meals, assume all the costs of implementing art projects of participants of the festival - paint, tools and transport. 

Conditions of participation in the festival: 

ARTIST-POET - a platform for experimental visual poetry project.

Participation in the festival is on a competitive basis. Participation is free.  The participants - artists, designers, architects The selection of the project participants comes by the jury (curators, artists, poets). Curators select a long list of artists, the jury chooses from the list participants of the festival. To participate you should send your sketches and completed application form with your photo until April 15, 2012. Number of sketches is not limited. Only one project of one author will be chosen to implement.

Project requirements:

A. You must create a "long" art project, a detailed descriptive and poetic narrative. "Poetic story" should be read as we move along it. The choice of art forms, motifs, stylistic and expressive means for creating stories, as well as using or not using typefaces, the degree of abstraction or literary remains with the author - the art work should be "read" successively and understood as a "poetic text".
B. Sketches should be taken into account of the module structure of fences. Sketch may be structured as a storyboard, comic strip or scrolling.
C. Sketches' length must be at least 10 sections, with a possible increase depending on the length of the fence (in fact, most of the fences are much longer than 40 sections).
D. Authors must be prepared to finalize the design in a 7- day period, tying the project to a particular fence provided by the organizers. Curator of the festival carries the choice of the location of the project.
E. The visual story must have at least 2 of the plan of perception - the plan "a big plastic" is perceived as close as 10 meters or more at high speed (from the window of a car or public transportation), as well as the finer detailed plan, perceived by pedestrians at close range.
F. You can't use more than 3 colors in your project, including black and white colors. The colors should be in a palette of the automatic tinting machine (RAL).
G. The project should be prepared for implementation by a team of 6-8 volunteers in a period of 2 to 5 days under the direct supervision of the artist, either without his supervision- by the provided sketches if for some reason the author cannot participate in the implementation process.
H. The project will be performed by hand with brushes, rollers and facade paint. The surface of the fence will be primed with white paint. Drawing will be transferred through a video projector. 

FORM OF STANZA - a platform for design projects in the field of typography.

Participation is only after invitation of the curators of the festival. The curators offer the authors the choice of the pieces of poetry and information about the fences, where they must be applied. Authors' projects are prepared in close collaboration with the curators of the festival.  The participants - designers working in the field of typography. The curators of the festival invite festival participants. Conditions of participation - Until April 15 prepare sketches of the project in accordance with the requirements and in close contact with the curators of the festival. 
Project requirements: A. Typographic composition should not affect the readability of the poetic fragment 
B. The project should have two perception plans - a plan of «big plastic» perceived from a distance of 10 meters or more at high speed (from the window of a car or public transport), and a plan of "reading" which is perceived by pedestrians at close range. The direction of "reading" is from left to right.
C. Typography/ calligraphy must be ready for reproduction by hands with facade paint, brushes, rollers and markers.
D. In preparing the draft the caisson surface of the concrete unit fences should be taken into account.
E. Sketches should take into account the module structure of fences.
F. Contour drawing of art project will be transferred through a video projector.
G. You can't use more than 3 colors in your project, including black and white colors. The colors should be in a palette of the automatic tinting machine (RAL).
H. The project should be prepared for implementation by a team of 6-8 volunteers in a period of 2 to 5 days.        

Requirements to authors.
A. Willingness of author to work with poetic fragments proposed by curators.
B. Willingness of author to work at the facility proposed by curators.
C. Willingness of author to create a form-design project for 2 weeks after getting a piece of verse and information about the location of the project (plan and photographs of the fence - scan and prospects).

THE PROJECT
Every year Beam commissions unique large-scale collaborative Projects that serve as centerpieces of each Beam session. Our Project Management Team work with the Project Masters to “translate” the Project blueprint into the camp context. Beam Campers and Staff work together to make the Project happen. Projects can range from the conceptual to the structural.

THE CAMP
Beam Camp is a 8-week summer program comprised of two sessions for kids aged 7-17 in Strafford, New Hampshire. Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. They transform ideas into artifacts and personal achievement into community success. Teams of campers work on different aspects of the Project each morning.

PROJECT IDEA SCOPE
- Take a look at our previous eight Beam Projects (http://bit.ly/bWlAtw). Think about how your Project will introduce Beam to new materials, media, techniques, tools, methods and concepts.
- Each camp session is 24 days long, with six, three hour work days per week. Projects should therefore be of a scale large enough to busy 108 campers supervised by 20+ adults for approximately fifty hours.
- Project Ideas should be big and result in a finished, spectacular product.
- You and/or your team should be able to tell us exactly how a group of adults would execute the kind of idea you propose.
- Our expertise is “translating” Project Ideas into the Beam context, but you must be the expert in the field(s) involved in executing your proposal.
- Your idea should take advantage of Beam’s outdoor space and rural location, but it need not be about camp or children or nature.

Applications are now being invited for the role of the Chief Curator for the 3rd Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2013 - Oct 2013 | Jan 2014

 
Following the 1st edition in 2007: Urban Voids, commissioned to a collective of curators, and the 2nd edition in 2010: Let’s talk about Houses, chief curated by Delfim Sardo, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale now seeks a new Chief Curator for its 3rd edition in 2013 to take place between October 2013 and January 2014 in the city of Lisbon.

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale Association is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2006. The first two Triennale editions have been officially recognised and acknowledged by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic and the Ministry of Culture as events of cultural relevance. As the most significant architectural event in the Iberian Peninsula, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale aims to establish itself as a wide forum of debate, reflection, prospect and promotion of architecture, from territorial to building scales, discussing issues of contemporary architecture, starting from the principle that architectural practice is a fundamental expression of the creation of place, the construction of an integrating sense of citizenship, and cultural affirmation.

A shared goal of taking the event beyond the restrictive scope of architects, placing the discourse (in exhibitions, publications, conferences, competitions, educational services and associated events) in a communicational field conceived to reach several age groups and visitors from different areas of interest was established and confirmed in the first two editions (2010: 152.000 visitors; 2007: 50.000 visitors).

Besides the different concepts underlying each edition, their contents' pertinence or the higher scientific and artistic levels necessary for the events, we consider to be of the utmost importance the assurance of an adequate communicational efficiency, as well as a character expressive enough to captivate and persuade a diverse audience.

The Chief Curator is to develop the general concept starting from the theme of “Density / Intensity” or present an alternative proposal for the 3rd edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, consisting of:

Three main exhibitions in Lisbon and one satellite exhibition in Oporto;
One exhibition as a satellite event outside Portugal (in collaboration with international partner institutions in one of the following cities: New York, Berlin, London, Beijing or Shanghai);
Two international architecture (idea-) competitions, both for professionals and architecture students;
A series of bilingual publications – pt. & en. (catalogues, short guides, films, audio books, etc);
Accompanying educational services and programmes;
An international conference (2 or 3-day event with around 20 speakers/moderators);
A selection of associated events within the city of Lisbon held by local institutions related to architecture and trans-disciplinary fields;
An international graphic design competition by invitation;
Competitions for exhibition architecture;
A closing conference for the entire event.

The successful applicant shall fulfil the job based partly or temporarily in Lisbon, as required by the project’s evolution and mutually agreed between the commissioner and the chief curator. The contract starts on November 15, 2011 (negotiable) and ends with the closing conference in January 2014.

Following the illegal demolition of Stratford’s Grade 2 listed Georgian Angel Cottage in 2007 the perpetrators were fined a mere £15,000. Global real estate developer Savills have now put a planning application forward to develop 180 units of student housing on the site!

As a challenge to the developers proposal and following on from the art event ‘From the Picturesque to the Demolished’, Scare in the Community are calling for art and architecture proposals for the site of the demolished cottage.

The best elected proposal will be submitted as an official planning application to Newham’s planning department. The awards ceremony will be held at the nearby Railway Tavern pub around the time of the opening of ‘Europe’s largest urban shopping centre’, the Westfield in September 2011.

PROPOSALS can be any medium (video, architecture, performance, music etc) but must be submitted on the official submission form available from [email protected].

Selected entries will then be presented by each artist at the event in a suitable format. The submission fee is £5 which will be used to pay for the planning application fee of the winning project. All submitted entries will be included in a publication.

NARS Foundation International Artist Residency Program

The NARS Foundation, a not-for-profit arts organization founded in 2006 and based in Brooklyn, awards Full and Partial Residential Grants for up to twelve months. We seek applications on two levels. The first level includes emerging and mid-career artists, for whom appointments as resident artists might make a significant impact on their careers. The second level consists of artists with established national and/or international reputations for whom a change of environment may offer refreshment and inspiration.

For 2011 Season II, the NARS Foundation International Artist Residency Program will only offer full and partial grants for six month residencies to US-based artists only.

The skeletal remains of Sutton Scarsdale Hall continue to decay. A dilapidated wreck of a structure, you enter at your own risk. This decay needs to be resisted and Sutton Scarsdale needs to live again...

In the very heart of England, Sutton Scarsdale Hall is to become the Pavilion of Postcontemporary Curating, a new international art facility set in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, dedicated solely to new curating.

The current hall is a perfect exhibition/performance space: lit from above, with high walls, neutral floor. As a functioning work of art/art centre, it should provide everything the contemporary curator requires, and be able to evolve as those needs change... Importantly it will facilitate new media production as well as old, it will have a library, archive, research facilities, studios and accommodation as well as a gallery dedicated to the history of the house.

It will be a base for new ways of looking at art and its production.
A sculpture, it will become part of the regional landscape and act as a beacon to advanced ideas and art praxis in the regional and international scenes.

With this call for entries, the Centre of Attention is seeking proposals for the re-imagining of Sutton Scarsdale Hall, Derbyshire into a pavilion of postcontemporary curating.

This call is open to architects, designers, artists, curators and others. All ideas, gestural, utopian or pragmatic are welcome.

THE SARGANT FELLOWSHIP FOR 2009–10 is a unique opportunity for an established or mid-career architect to engage with Rome and the community of the British School at Rome for three months.

THE FELLOWSHIP IS ONE OF THE SENIOR and most prestigious residencies offered by the British School at Rome. The award is made annually to a distinguished artist or architect, to enable them to research and make work within the historical context of Rome. For 2009–10 it has been decided to offer this opportunity exclusively to those working within the field of architecture. It is hoped that the Sargant Fellow will take an interest in the work of other resident architects and artists.

THE FELLOWSHIP OFFERS a spacious residential studio with en-suite facilities, full board at the School, a grant of £2,000 per month and a travel allowance of £500. It is tenable April–June 2010.

APPLICANTS MUST BE of British or Commonwealth nationality, or have been living in the UK or Commonwealth for at least the last three years.

The Rome Scholarship in Architecture is an annual prize awarded to exceptional architects or post-Part II students of architecture to enable them to study under their own direction at the BSR. Scholars are encouraged to select subjects for study in the fields of architecture or urbanism that are of contemporary significance but that will benefit from examination in the context of Rome or Italy.
 
The Rome Scholarship in Landscape Architecture is being offered to encourage a recent graduate or an individual in mid-career to propose a contemporary response to the Roman landscape and to pursue a topic with direct bearing on modern design in the landscape.
 
The Scholarships offer:
a grant equivalent to £500 per month
duration: between 3 and 9 months. 
 
Applicants must:
be of British or Commonwealth nationality, or have been working professionally or studying at postgraduate level for at least the last 3 years in the UK or Commonwealth (i.e. since December 2005).

Complete and send the application form + curriculum vitae (and any supporting texts) to the address given on the form by 27 March 2009.  (N.B. Applications by fax and e-mail will not be accepted.) Short-listed applicants will be interviewed in London.
 
Selection for these Scholarships is by members of the Faculty of the Fine Arts of the BSR.
