NY Drawing Booth (NYDrawingBooth.com) is expanding to the UK!  We  provide corporate and high end event attendees with sophisticated 3 minute portraits hand-drawn by top artists using the latest technology.  Our artists mingle in the crowd adding surprise and excitement, leaving event guests with a gift they will not forget. We are the newest trend in event entertainment nationally and internationally, and our client list includes ABC, Comicon, Disney, Dell, ESPN, Godiva, Macys, InStyle and more. 

Our company is seeking exceptional artists to provide fast, accurate hand-drawn portraits on an iPad. Artists must be reliable, comfortable working with a crowd, and able to draw people in as little as 3 minutes.  The job of the artist is not only to capture the portrait, but to engage with attendees, and handle the technology and procedures that make NYDB stand out. These include sending completed drawings to print and to the clients in a matter of seconds. Uploading all files at the culmination of events to the NYDB dropbox.

Requirements:

Must be able to draw a sophisticated 3 minute likeness on an iPad with a pressure sensitive stylus.
Must be comfortable using and learning technology in a fast-paced environment
Must be able to be comfortable mingling in a crowd, chit-chatting with attendees as needed, and pleasing with a sophisticated portrait.
Must be reliable. Arrive at events at designated time and work at top speed for the entirety of the event.
Must dress appropriately to the events.

Proposals are accepted annually from Emerging Curators for the Emerging Artists Summer Exhibition. The Emerging Artists Summer Exhibition will be curated by a selected Emerging Curator and will be made up of Emerging Artists.  An Emerging Curator is defined as an independent curator who is beginning their career as a curator. Proposal must show history of at least 3 prior curatorial projects successfully presented to a public audience.

The selected curator's exhibition theme will be announced in the open call process for the emerging artists program.  The theme should be relevant to political, social or environmental issues.  Curators must select 50% of their artists from the pool of emerging artists.  The exhibitions must include at least 60% women artists, as part of Smack Mellon's mission to support women artists.

Smack Mellon provides curators a stipend and a budget for artists' stipends. The curator is encouraged to stop by the gallery during gallery hours to look at the space in order to tailor their proposal to the space.  

Smack Mellon can provide audio and visual equipment such as projectors and flat screen monitors as well as technical support for installing complex projects.

FORMAT International Photography Festival has announced its Open Call for submissions for the next 2017 edition. Exhibition proposals and ideas are invited exploring the theme of HABITAT through varied narratives and imagery that document the worlds around us.
 
 FORMAT is the UK’s leading international contemporary festival of photography and related media. Organised by QUAD and the University of Derby, FORMAT was established in 2004 by QUAD’s Artistic Director Louise Clements and now holds a year round programme of international commissions, open calls, residencies and conferences in Derby and beyond.
 
 FORMAT17 invites photographers to challenge and respond to the theme HABITAT in as many inventive ways imaginable, and share the experiences and stories that coalesce as we negotiate our complex existence, including the flora, fauna, landscapes and the lives within. A wide variety of works are sought for presentation in the festival, from long term researched documentary, multimedia, archive, installation, interventions, publications, fictions, interactive, performance, participatory, mobile, narrative and all kinds of conceptual works all rooted in photography in diverse ways.
 
The progamme for FORMAT17 will include a wide range of projects exploring HABITAT,  looking broadly at landscape, environment, mobility, migrations, digital worlds, ideas of home and displacement, conflict and regeneration and all the spaces that we live in including work that considers our short or long term impact on the world locally and internationally. Rapid changes in the environment, industry, technology, wars, migration and climate are accelerating at such unprecedented rates that the human impact on the Earth has pushed us into a new cultural geological epoch or era known as the Anthropocene. With tangible impacts of these changes being recorded in the atmosphere, lands, plants, oceans, humanity and wildlife, we are interested in the effect, solutions and conditions of this state that we are in, on micro and macro levels worldwide. A number of awards will be available including: FORMAT17 exhibition opportunities, cash, equipment, features in award winning international magazines and exclusive free membership offers.

Sponsored by FotoFocus, REAL-PHOTO is the second of two companion exhibitions to be produced by Manifest to explore the FotoFocus Biennial theme "Photography, The Undocument".

From photography’s earliest inception into the culture at large, there was a recognition of both the artistic and scientific potentials of the medium. Within the art camp there was a push to validate photography’s role as Art by producing photographs that emulated the High Art of painting and drawing, peaking (possibly) with the Pictorialism Movement. At the opposite end were those who saw photography as a tool for ‘straight’, objective, representation—celebrating the photograph’s inherent characteristics as unique and valid in their own right.

This exhibit seeks works that are made through the photographic process exclusively, but which appear to not be photographic in nature, at least at first glance. While we are eager to discover just what artists are making that could qualify, we imagine submissions could include, but not be limited to, manipulated film, photograms, abstracted digital photographic imagery, direct emulsion exposure, photo-transfers, historical and alternative processes, and the like.

Real-photo calls for artists to submit works in any photographic media. There is no limitation on subject matter for this project. However, works must appear to be non-photographic in nature.

The opening reception for this exhibit will be the kick-off event for Manifest's 13th season, and will coincide with the community-wide Walk on Woodburn, and the month-long region-wide FotoFocus Biennial.

The Photo-Realism or Hyper-Realism movement responds to photography through painting, drawing, sculpture, and other media incorporating photographic qualities such as flatness, the illusion of depth, reflections, depth of field, and extremely realistic detail.

The two companion exhibitions presented by Manifest for the FotoFocus Biennial each explore the biennial-wide concept from different aspects of 'undocument' or 'untruth'. Photo-real takes non-photographic media and reveals how it can do many of the same things as photography, deepening the consideration of the 'undocumented'.

Photo-real calls for artists to submit works in any media relevant to the concept of photorealism. There is no limitation on subject matter for this project.

The opening reception for this exhibit will be the kick-off event for Manifest's 13th season, and will coincide with the community-wide Walk on Woodburn, and the month-long region-wide FotoFocus Biennial.

International Photographer in Residence Programme 2017

Archisle: The Jersey Contemporary Photography Programme, hosted by the Société Jersiaise Photographic Archive, in the British Channel Island of Jersey promotes contemporary photography through an ongoing programme of exhibitions, education and commissions. The Archisle project connects photographic archives, contemporary practice and experiences of island cultures and geographies through the development of a forum for creative discourse between Jersey and international practitioners.      

Archisle is currently inviting applications for the position of Photographer in Residence 2017. This is an exciting post in its fourth year commencing in April running for six months through to September 2017. The Residency provides the following key benefits and opportunities:

- £10,000 award for a new body of work and solo exhibition
- Studio with access to inkjet printing and office facilities
- Living accommodation and stipend
- Travel costs

A key focus of the Archisle project is to engage the residency programme with Jersey culture and community through audience and participatory involvement. In addition to the production and solo exhibition of new work responding to the culture and geography of Jersey, the Resident will be contracted to teach photography one day per week (or equivalent) over the six month duration of the project. This teaching will be delivered in a workshop format to a range of educational and community groups. Applications are therefore encouraged from practitioners possessing the desire, enthusiasm and a proven ability to impart technical skills and develop critical understanding of contemporary photography across a diverse range of participants.

Applicants are requested to submit:

- Examples of recent work (min 10 / max 20 images)
- Statement describing current practice
- Statement of objectives for the residency including an outline project/exhibition proposal 
- A current CV including details of past exhibitions/publications
- An estimate of travel costs to Jersey

(Hong Kong: 12 July 2016) The WMA Masters (formerly WYNG Masters Award) welcomes photography submissions from all over the world on this year’s theme of MOBILITY. Images must relate to the theme and be made in or relate to Hong Kong. The deadline for submission is 30 September 2016 (23:59 Hong Kong time; GMT + 8:00).

From now till 30 September 2016 the WMA Masters invites both international and Hong Kong artists and image-makers to submit photographic-based work. The visual content must be related to Hong Kong and to the chosen theme MOBILITY. Finalists will be selected by a panel of international judges and their works will be exhibited in Hong Kong in Spring 2017. A full-colour catalogue will be published to coincide with the exhibition. The WMA Masters will also host a series of talks, panels, and seminars during the exhibition period. The winner of WMA Masters will receive a cash prize of HKD$250,000. Each of the six additional finalists will receive HKD$15,000.

This year, applicants to WMA Masters who are Hong Kong residents will have a chance to be invited to submit an expression of interest for a professional practice residency at FORMAT International Photography Festival 2017. The winner of the residency will have an opportunity to visit FORMAT for the launch and have access to events, portfolio reviews, as well as have their work included in the FORMAT catalogue.

The WMA Masters’ international panel of judges is comprised of industry leaders in photography, art, publishing, and non-profit. They include Zoher ABDOOLCARIM, MaryAnn CAMILLERI, Abby CHEN, Louise CLEMENTS, Kevin WY LEE, LEUNG Po-Shan Anthony, Christopher PHILLIPS, Theme Judge (to be confirmed).

About MOBILITY

Mobility is freedom of movement - across oceans and continents, across cities, streets and neighbourhood, perhaps across race, religion or even gender.

Hong Kong is a compact modern metropolis with world class transport and logistics system, where people and goods are constantly on the move and commuters have their routes mapped out to the exact subway carriage number in order to save the most time getting to the exit on the other side.

Mobility means circulation. Blood needs to flow, so does Chi. Blockage or leakage means disease. Babies learn to move at an early age, but mobility can be a major challenge for the elderly. Money and deals, traffic and even population needs to move smoothly, preferably in the right direction.

Mobility is moving vertically up and down buildings, mountains and seas. It is human to aspire to move up the ladder, whether in the corporate, institutional or social. Hong Kong had always been the land of opportunity, where hard work might move one’s children, if not oneself, upwards.

Parents still scheme to get their children the best chance in life in the education system.
But more and more social mobility is restricted, in one of the world’s most unequal community, where poverty is prevalent in the midst of plenty.

Hong Kong is the so-called borrowed place on borrowed time, where people come to get rich and get out, and end up putting down roots in spite of themselves. Now we are caught in a dilemma. How do we build a future in a place where nothing stays still, or lasts? Can we all still get where we want to go? And when we arrive, are we ever allowed to stop? Are we moving? Or are we still? What happens if there is no mobility?
And what happens if mobility is endless?

About the WMA Programme

The WMA Programme is multi-dimensional and includes the WMA Masters, WMA Commission, the WMA Open, a series of talk-programmes and student engagement projects. The WMA programme is a non-profit series of events and programmes that were developed to generate awareness and engage the public on socially-relevant issues of great importance to Hong Kong.
The WMA Masters’ 2012 inaugural theme was POVERTY, followed by AIR, WASTE and IDENTITY. The theme of 2016/17 cycle is MOBILITY.
