To celebrate our 5th Anniversary The Santo Foundation will be awarding five Individual Artist Awards. Our distinguished juror is Marilu Knode, Executive Director of Laumeier International Sculpture Park. She will award three individual artists $5000.00 each. In addition we are introducing the Artist Choose Artist Award. Internationally acclaimed artist and critical writer Buzz Spector will award two individual artists $500.00 each.
Marilu Knode has been working in the arts for twenty-five years, focusing the past fifteen years on organizing projects international in scope. Her work in the Middle East began when Knode was the U.S. Commissioner for the 7th International Cairo Biennale with Nancy Spero, and she co-founded a curatorial practice program at the American University in Cairo. Knode has commissioned temporary and permanent projects with artists from around the globe, and brings this international perspective to Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis where she began as director in 2009. Prior to arrival at Laumeier, Knode served as Associate Director / Head of Research at F.A.R. (Future Arts Research) at Arizona State University. She served as Senior Curator at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Her credits also include the Institute of Visual Arts at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Knode has an extensive record of lectures, panel and jury activities including ArtForum Berlin and the Yale School of Architecture.. She has contributed essays to Art in America, Flash Art, Tema Celeste, the Savannah College of Art and Design, CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid, the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Germany and Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, among others.
Buzz Spector is an artist whose artwork has been shown in such museums and galleries as the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. Spector has received several awards including the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. He was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1982, 1985 and 1991. He is currently the Dean of the College and Graduate School of Art in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University. www.buzzspector.com
