CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS!
Public Space: Cairo
Mid-April to mid-May, 2012
How do posters, advertisements, monuments and other kinds of visual culture impact your everyday life in Cairo? If you could create any kind of artistic intervention in your neighborhood, what would it look like? Join Townhouse and guest artists Jenna Crowder and Keith Lane for a collaborative art project that explores how public space intersects with art, design, and visual culture. Through a 4-week series of intensive workshops, participants will create "public service announcements" (in the form of posters, banners, and architectural models) that will communicate your messages about the possibilities of public art in the city of Cairo. Participants will learn different kinds of creative interviewing techniques, including audio recording, writing and note-taking, photography, video and film, and drawing. Using research, photographs, video footage, audio, and sketches collected during interviews, and by learning how to create effective community partnerships, participants will be prepared to address social issues and reflect public needs through art and design. By the end of the project, participants will create a series of large-scale, dynamic public service announcements.
When:
Mid-April to mid-May, 2012. Workshops will be held at Townhouse Gallery in the evenings three times per week for 4 weeks, and will build off of each other in progression throughout the month. Participants who wish to stay on to bring the public service announcements to fruition will work with the artists and the gallery in May 2012.
Dates:
Exact dates for workshops will be announced soon.
Materials:
Participants should bring their own notebooks and/or sketchbooks to use specifically for this course. Other equipment and materials will provided for participant use. It will be helpful for participants to have access to their own cameras and laptops.
How to apply:
Participants should have a working knowledge of English in order to participate, and should commit to participating for all 4 weeks of the workshop. If you’d like to get involved, send an email with your CV and a short letter of motivation (in English) telling us about yourself and why you want to participate, to Jenna Crowder at [email protected] and Ania Szremski at [email protected]. A maximum of 20 applicants will be selected.
