Re-Imagine: Ourselves A Festival of New Art, Music, Performance, Poetry and Video

Yara Arts Group is a resident company at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York. Established in 1990, Yara is a collective of artists of Asian, African, Latino, Eastern and Western European ancestry, who come together to create original work based on contemporary and traditional material from often-overlooked Eastern cultures.

The artists bring together fragments of plays, poems, songs, myths and historical sources to create original work that is reflective of the culture they explore. The group has created 24 original theatre pieces based on extensive research in Eastern Europe, Siberia and Asia in Yara's signature style of: multilingual dialogue and songs supported by evocative visuals and documentation. 

In addition to the theatrical performances, Yara curates an annual weekend-long winter festival of visual art, music and performances at the Ukrainian Institute in Manhattan. The Ukrainian Institute is a mansion that is protected as a contributing element of the Metropolitan Museum Historic District and in 1977 was designated as a National Historic Landmark. In addition to visual art, including video, the weekend will include a concert, daily workshops, and scheduled performances. 

 

CALL TO ARTISTS This year's theme is Re-Imagine: Ourselves.

How do you re-imagine yourself as a person, as an artist, and/or the community?  

GUIDELINES: Participate in the curated festival by submitting images and video of your own art addressing the theme, Re-Imagine: Ourselves. Artists will be contacted by January 9, 2012 only if they are chosen to participate.

All videos must be submitted as a link on Youtube or Vimeo. All images must be submitted as jpegs, no larger than 1MB each.

No work will be for sale during this festival.

**All work must be accompanied by a short statement of up to 2 paragraphs. 

VIDEO: Submit video up to 1 minute in length by sending a link (Youtube or Vimeo)

VISUAL ARTISTS: Submit up to 5 (five) images of any 2-D media (photography, digital art, prints, drawings, paintings, etc) 

PERFORMERS/POETS/MUSICIANS: Submit any text, sound samples or images. Proposals will also be considered.

galerie OPEN by Alexandra Rockelmann is proud to announce its third installment of the Summer Break project, a two month long Curatorial Residency program designed to educate and inspire young art professionals from around the world. Located in Berlin, one of the international contemporary art community’s most dynamic and burgeoning centers for creativity, galerie OPEN provides a stimulating setting in which to learn and grow.

The Summer Break project not only hands over the physical space of galerie OPEN, but also offers technical and creative support to emerging art professionals as they develop and produce their own non-commercial exhibition. Participants of the residency will expand their professional experience, while acquiring the intellectual and practical skills for curating contemporary art exhibitions.

The Summer Break project encourages participants to take full ownership of their work, but also extends a number of helpful resources in order to guide them to success. Residents will gain access to galerie OPEN’s list of contacts, from which they can build a network within the contemporary art community in Berlin. Jury members who reside in Berlin will also serve as direct mentors, providing expert advice and critical feedback as participants engineer their independent exhibition.

As they develop their exhibition, participants will engage with the local art community. The Summer Break project requires that participants recruit strictly Berlin based artists for their exhibition. In addition, galerie OPEN will introduce residents to curators of local museums, foundations and project spaces alike. The invitation only Gala dinner held at the opening of the exhibition will also be an opportunity for participants to give back and make connections in the Berlin contemporary art community as they showcase their completed work.

In its third year, the Summer Break project, which has previously seen young aspiring German art professionals to success, now invites prospective participants worldwide to apply. All costs of the Summer Break project are covered, including airfare and travel, as well as accommodation and food for the duration of the residency. Mailing and newsletter publications related to the curated exhibition, as well as drinks for the opening night and all related events hosted at galerie OPEN will also be sponsored.

Stoff is a festival that aims to support and promote cutting edge theater and performance making.

The festival is foremost focused on promoting artists who have not yet found their feet in the industry however we also welcome submissions from established groups/individuals who promote innovation in their artistic work.

Semapa, an urban development company of the Paris Rive Gauche area in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, is launching an international call for applications open to all forms of artistic creation.

Aims of the artistic project
Drawing on the specificities and the evolution of its surroundings, the artwork will contribute to enhance and assert the attractivity and the centrality of the site as a bridge between two parts of the city and, on a larger scale, of this blooming area.

Selection criteria
The provisional budget, including fees and production costs, amounts to 600.000 euros, excluding taxes.

The selection will take place in two steps.
The first part will be open to all applicants; a maximum of five artists will be selected to participate in the second phase. Each of these artists will have until the final trimester of 2012 to produce sketches on the basis of the contract specifications. Each of these proposals will be compensated in the amount of 15.000 euros, including taxes.

2012 Cheng Long International Environmental Art Project in Taiwan

Call for Proposals  “What’s for Dinner?”

Artists from all countries are invited to send a proposal for a site-specific outdoor sculpture installation to be created during a 26-day artist in residency (April 11 – May 7, 2012) in Cheng Long, a small rural village near the southwestern coast of Taiwan in Kouhu Township,Yunlin County.

This art project is an expansion of the 2010 and 2011 Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Projects, going into the Village as well as the Wetlands. The selected artists will work with elementary school children and community residents to create large-scale sculpture installations focused on the theme of “What’s for Dinner?”

The artworks should reflect on environmental issues surrounding food production and emphasize organic aquaculture. Artworks will be in village public spaces, on abandoned buildings, and in the wetlands nature preserve, and artists will use recycled materials and natural materials to create their artworks that will stay on exhibition through 2013.

Residency in Taiwan: April 8 – May 7, 2012

Selected Artists Receive: NT50,000 (US$1,662), round trip economy airfare, accommodations and meals for 26 days in Taiwan, local transportation, volunteer help to find materials and make the artworks

The Association Shedhalle Zürich is looking for a new curatorial and operational team (180%) starting August 1, 2012.

Referring to the role and positioning of Shedhalle as a self-organised exhibition space, which is not hierarchically structured and part of the compound of the cultural centre Rote Fabrik in Zurich, the board of the association is looking for a new curatorial and operational team by August 2012.

The team effort should span all of the various spheres of activity. The Association Shedhalle Zürich’s programmatic orientation focuses on opening up a critical thinking space that mirrors its policies and its practices as well as topical issues. The emphasis lies on questions regarding politics of display and the euro-centrist history of exhibition making. The term is limited to 4 years.

What’s Talents?
Talents is an international competition held annually. The jury of professional judges selects four photographers and four art critics each year from the submitted entries. Their work is presented in four solo exhibitions at C/O Berlin over the course of the year and at the Goethe Institute in New York City. Each solo exhibition is accompanied by a publication in which images and text enter into dialogue: talented young artists present themselves and their projects to a broad public, open up their work for discussion, and thus create a public forum.

Talents 2012
In 2012 too, the Talents series will focus on the theme of Cinematic Thinking. Engagement with the medium of film has become ever more central to photography in recent years. This can be seen in the increasing exploration of film production processes, experimentation with narrative structures, and references to film aesthetics and film myths. How can photography adapt film structures and simultaneously break them open? What strengths do still images have over moving pictures? Photography in the classical sense, with its conventional wall presentation, can be expanded through the utilization of projection and installation strategies, thereby creating new possibilities for reflecting on the medium of photography itself.

Who can apply?
Photographers and art critics up to the age of 35.

How do I apply?
Photographers can submit up to 15 samples of their work in print form – maximal size DIN A4, no originals. A short project description should accompany the photographs, as well as the online application form. A fee of 20 Euros will be raised.

White Flag Projects, a not-for-profit alternative art gallery working with international and national artists and curators, has internship opportunities available for the upcoming term:

Internships are available to applicants pursuing or having recently received undergraduate or graduate degrees in the fine arts, art history, and related fields.

White Flag Projects interns are deeply involved in every aspect of a major alternative art gallery's inner workings. Our interns are an integral part of the team that assists in the production, installation, and documentation of exhibitions and important communication with visitors. Interns may also expect to assist visiting artists and curators, and participate in regular gallery activities including research, promotion of exhibitions, clerical tasks, and other work related to the facility.

Applicants should have solid foundations in 20th and 21st century art practices. Successful applicants will demonstrate strong social, writing and computer skills. Internships at White Flag Projects are unpaid. White Flag Projects works closely with student's advisors to provide academic credit for their work. Interns are required to work 5 hours per day 2 days per week in addition to occasional evenings on which openings, lectures, concerts, or other special events are scheduled.

Utopia is the human race’s ultimate aspiration - it gives us scope for imagining, inventing and reinventing possible futures and new worlds. What are the possibilities of the human condition in a Utopian context?

Is our idyllic Avalon a city-less world where widely spaced earth-sheltered towns offer sweeping views over the green plains, valleys and mountains? Where high-speed air trains link the communities, cycle ways dominate the human landscape, non-polluting solar and wind generated power fuels all vehicles, all food is fresh and home- grown and everything is reused and recycled?

Or do our futures lie in the sprawling Dystopian cities spreading their tentacles across the globe in the form of highways feeding the city; humanity is exhausting the Earth’s raw materials by which it is sustained, is it thus drawing the rest of the planet into its inevitable apocalyptic end?

One argument is that the future of the human race lies in its genesis –with a vital need to reconnect with nature and follow a more spiritual path. For this to happen, do we need to break away from the materialistic constraints of the city – its tendency to coerce the mass into subjugation and dependency - rendering them unable to survive outside of it?

The city can be seen as the embodiment of a collective human machine, operating not by individual choices, but by an enveloping and all-pervasive control and manipulation, of mind as well as of the body.

Oswald Spengler, in his book The Decline of the West, describes the megalopolis (city) as an inward looking organism; turning away from the sun, and creating its own language and soul. Such a built up environment could conjure up an Orwellian scenario where the mass is easily controlled in an enclosed cityscape compound. Some would say this is already happening.

Spengler states that we are now in the later stages of a Faustian civilisation where we are constantly striving for the unattainable – making man the ultimately tragic and doomed figure. Is the Utopian ideal then destined never to succeed? The idea of Utopia inevitably leads to recognizing the reality of Dystopia.

Utopia is our heaven; it is our dreams of perfected progress - the pinnacle of human achievements, social justice, prevailing peace and harmony with nature.

Dystopia is our possible hell; a nightmare where the human spirit is controlled and nullified in an environment that breeds fractured communities and distorted views of ourselves.

What would the cities and dwellings, the peoples in such a Utopian or Dystopian worlds, and its possibilities look like?

What are the questions we should be asking, and what are the answers?

Through Tomorrow’s Eyes hopes to shed some light on all of this.
