The Next Step: Navigating the Art World after your Degree

A Special Two-Day Seminar with artist Doug Fishbone

 September 3-4, 2011, Bethnal Green, London

This two-day seminar offers an overview of issues in professional practice and development for visual artists. It is particularly aimed to advise artists and students making the transition from BA or MA courses to the "real" world of professional practicing artists.

A unique feature of the seminar is that each participant will have a one-on-one hour-long private tutorial in which they can focus on issues and questions particular to their situation.

 The first session is an all-day lecture/discussion from 10 am - 5 pm, which will cover the following:

 

- Managing Materials ie CV / Portfolio

- Marketing and Self-Promotion

- Networking and Press

- Looking for work / Interning

- Useful resources

- Creative approaches to funding projects

- How to conduct a successful research campaign - using the Internet as a strategic tool

 The second day is devoted to individual tutorials.

 

Students will have a private hour-long coaching session/tutorial to discuss whatever issues they would like.

Doug Fishbone was born in New York in 1969 and earned an MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London in 2003. Selected solo exhibitions include Tate Britain, London (2010-11), Rokeby, London (2010-11, and 2009), Gimpel Fils, London (2006) and 30,000 Bananas in Trafalgar Square (2004). Selected group exhibitions include Rude Britannia: British Comic Art, Tate Britain (2010), Busan Biennale, Busan, South Korea (2008); Laughing in a Foreign Language, Hayward Gallery (2008), London; British Art Show 6, Newcastle, Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester (2006). He performs regularly at both international and UK venues, including appearances at London’s ICA and Southbank Centre. Fishbone lives and works in London.

Fishbone's most recent project Elmina, made in collaboration with Revele Films in Ghana, had its world premiere at Tate Britain in 2010. He is currently exhibiting his work at SMBA in Amsterdam, the project space of the Stedelijk Museum, and upcoming projects include exhibitions and screenings at FACT in Liverpool, Dublin Contemporary, ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany and a solo exhibition at the new public space CIRCA Projects in Sunderland in October.

Fishbone lectures in professional practice at the University of Westminster, and is a visiting tutor at Middlesex University. He has been invited to guest lecture at more than two dozen universities around the UK, including the RCA, Glasgow School of Art, Goldsmiths College, and the Slade.

 The course is limited to a maximum of ten students, to enable comfortable discussions and a generally comfortable vibe.

Call For Submissions - TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary

The Main Gallery Space is programmed through an annual call for submissions as well as by curated exhibitions. TRUCK hosts eight exhibitions each year in this space and accepts applications from professional artists only. TRUCK’s definition of a professional artist is someone who has:
*completed his/her basic training (or the equivalent)
*produced an independent body of work
*presented their work in a professional context
*maintained an independent professional practice for at least one year.

Undergraduate students currently enrolled in school, college or university are not eligible to apply, however this restriction only applies to our main space and students are welcome to apply to our +15 and CAMPER spaces. Graduate students are eligible only if they meet TRUCK Gallery’s definition of a professional artist.

Selection Procedure:
Proposals are selected through a peer review process by the TRUCK Programming Committee. The Committee is comprised of board members who have extensive visual, performance, and media art backgrounds. Proposals will be selected based on consideration of the following criteria: artistic merit of the proposed project, fit with TRUCK Gallery’s mandate, feasibility of the proposed budget, and the ability of TRUCK Gallery to provide appropriate space/support for the project. TRUCK is committed to paying a minimum of CARFAC fees, and when possible provides travel support for our exhibiting artists. Unfortunately TRUCK has limited resources and is unable to consider projects that require production support. We will endeavor to provide what assistance where we can for the presentation and exhibition of work, but operate within our meager resources.

TRUCK accepts submission in ELECTRONIC FORMAT ONLY. Please send all written support as a SINGLE PDF FILE. Images must be in JPEG FORMAT burned to a single CD. 2011 CINTAS Fellowship Award

Miami Dade College (MDC), the new home of the CINTAS Fellows Collection, and the CINTAS Foundation are seeking artists, composers and creative writers to compete for a chance to win 10,000 USD and a 2011 CINTAS Fellowship Award in Visual Arts, Music Composition and Creative Writing.

There will be an exhibition at MDC's National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower in October highlighting the work of the CINTAS finalists in the three disciplines: music, visual arts and creative writing. Hortensia E. Sampedro, president of the CINTAS Foundation, will announce the winner of each fellowship who will be awarded 10,000 USD and the opportunity to pursue a project outlined in their applications.

The only one of its kind in the nation, the CINTAS Fellowship Program has honored more than 300 artists since it was established in 1963. Past grant recipients include composers Orlando García and Tania León; architect Andrés Martín Duany, writers Oscar Hijuelos, María Irene Fornes and Reinaldo Arenas; and visual artists Agustín Fernández, Félix González-Torres, Guillermo Calzadilla, Quisqueya Henríquez, Lydia Rubio, Gean Moreno, Glexis Novoa, Luís Gispert, María Martínez-Cañas, Carlos Alfonzo and Andrés Serrano.
The CINTAS Foundation awards fellowships annually to creative artists of Cuban lineage who reside outside of Cuba. The Foundation was established with funds from the estate of Oscar B. Cintas (1887–1957), former Cuban ambassador to the United States, a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts.

Call for Entries: The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education seeks artists for an exhibition titled, “The Living Room” to open in November, 2011. Living installations will bring our gallery to life.

This fall, The Schuylkill Center plans to bring the outdoors in, transforming its gallery space into a “living room.” Both a perfect teaching tool about ecosystems and a needed scenery change for those of us with cabin fever, The Schuylkill Center invites artists to submit proposals of living art works, any handmade art object including plant life.

About The Welcome Gallery
The Schuylkill's Center Welcome Gallery is a public space located in the main building just past the reception desk. Welcome Gallery exhibitions are curated by Art Department Director and or by visiting curators or organizations. The Gallery’s curatorial concepts explore and reflect on environmental themes that relate to other Schuylkill Center departmental activities of Education and Land Restoration. Four to five exhibits are presented each year and include works created in all media. An exhibition statement accompanies the artwork and provides interpretive information about the exhibition and its connection to the environmental issues that it addresses.

Exhibitions are installed for approximately three months. Due to this being an exhibition of living objects, we ask each artist to consider methods by which these pieces will be maintained, and what support you can provide in this aspect of the work. In our small and busy gallery, submissions for wall installations and free standing objects may be better suited than floor pieces.

Application Details:
To apply, send 5 - 10 images as jpegs, a statement and a resume to [email protected]. The Schuylkill Center is open to submissions of living art objects of varying sizes, shapes and materials. In the proposal, include all dimensions, approximate weight, installation needs and a maintenance plan.

Staff will provide limited but consistent maintenance of art work (light watering if needed). Since art works are living objects, artists must be available to provide more extensive maintenance of their work during the duration of the exhibit if required.The Schuylkill Center has a limited number of pedestals for exhibition use. Artists are responsible for installation and piece-specific support. Include photos and dimensions of the support in your proposal.

All work is insured while on loan at The Schuylkill Center.

Call for Entries for the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival

This is the 15th year since the Japan Media Arts Festival was first held in 1997.
The festival is organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, with the aim of promoting the creation and development of media arts (comic, animation, game and media art).
The call is for entries in four divisions, Art, Entertainment, Animation and Manga, and is open to entries from anywhere in the world. The Agency will award a Grand Prize and a number of other awards at the festival, and the winning works will also be exhibited.
Last year saw 1951 entries from Japan and 694 from elsewhere (48 countries and regions) and more than 70,000 visitors attended the exhibition of award-winning works. The festival has grown into an event that attracts wide attention both in Japan and around the world.
The application period has now been officially set. Applications for entry will be accepted from Friday, July 15 through Thursday, September 22, 2011. After entries are judged, an exhibition of award-winning works will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo from Wednesday, February 22 through Sunday, March 4 , 2012.

The Studio Voltaire Intern programme is designed to provide in-depth training for candidates interested in arts production and management. The position is ideal for a recent graduate or final year arts student who is interested in gallery operations and non-profit arts organisations.

The Intern will work with the Director, General Manager, and Programme Assistant contributing to the day-to-day running of the gallery and programme of events and exhibitions. The position will involve working on office administration, gallery management, archiving, invigilation, installation and assisting with off-site events on and off-site.

Essential skills required for the post include: administration and MAC proficiency, excellent verbal and written communication, fluency in English and a contemporary art background.  Successful candidates will be pro-active with good team skills.  They will provide evidence of reliability and a desire to expand their knowledge and passion for the arts.

Conditions of the programme:

Successful candidates will be required to work three days a week, including Saturdays during exhibition time.  The position runs for a four-month period.  Although the position is a voluntary position, travel (within London) and lunch expenses will be covered and Saturday invigilation work is paid £40 per day.

Until October 31, 2011 young filmmakers from Germany and Eastern Europe can apply for the Co-Production Prize of the Robert Bosch Stiftung with a joint film project. In December 2011 out of all submissions 15 projects will be nominated by an independent jury to compete for the prize and up to 70,000 euros in each of the categories animated film, documentary, and short film.

In February, 2012 the nominees will be invited to a three days workshop to Berlin and to selected events of the Berlinale Talent Campus and the Berlinale Co-Production Market. There they get prepared by filmexperts for the pitch to the jury at the goEast-Film Festival in Wiesbaden in April 2012. At the award ceremony of the goEast-Film Festival the jury announces three prize winners.

After a brief respite, Dumbo Arts Center's Open Call for Exhibitions is back!

We invite artists and curators from all levels of experience to submit proposals for 2012. 3-4 exhibitions will be chosen for production in our gallery space at 111 Front St. in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

For 2012, DAC will be organizing exhibitions around the theme of "Focus." Artists and curators are encouraged to interpret the theme as they see fit.

We will consider all proposals, though we will admit a bias to installation, video, the very loud, the very quiet and/or the very small. Proposals can be for solo or group exhibitions. As DAC is a small (and nimble!) institution, artists and curators will have a very hands on role in developing and installing the show. Proposals that include elements of public programming are encouraged.

Application Guidelines
1. The deadline for proposals is September 12th, 2011.
2. Initial proposals should be a written statement only. The proposals should be presented thus:

A summary of the exhibition not exceeding 200 words
A detailed description, including how the exhibition addresses the theme, not more than 1500 words.
Proposals should be submitted as PDFs.
3. All interested applicants should be familiar with DAC's exhibition space.
4. Please do not include images, videos, CVs or links at this time. Proposals that do not follow this guideline will not be reviewed.
5. Proposals are to be emailed to [email protected] no later than midnight, September 12th, 2011.

DAC will review all submissions and compile a shortlist of 10 applicants. The Alice Awards

The relaunch of the website is timely, as it will also enable prospective entrants to understand the Alice Society's updated registration policies for participation in the Alice Awards and the new, special program for emerging artists.

For the latter, Alice Awards is now offering an original five-year Emerging Membership program designed to encourage and discover the future generation of artists, curators, critics who want to further engage with the global contemporary art community. For a one-time fee of only €25, artists, curators and critics under 35 years of will be offered (5) five years of guaranteed access to an ID-account, where they will be allowed to upload up to three (3) projects per year. This work will then be judged by the Global Board of Contemporary Art, for five consecutive years. To be eligible, you must send a recent CV or résumé and apply for Emerging Membership.
