The TippingPoint Commissions: an invitation to submit a proposal
Deadline: 6 December, 2010
The TippingPoint Commissions are an initiative for professional artists who wish to create new performance work in the context of climate change. First launched in 2009 this is the second call for proposals.

The theme of climate change is intended to provide a stimulus and a springboard for the commissions. We are not looking for a didactic exposition of the subject, as a great deal of information is available through a wide range of media. We are more interested in work intended to stimulate audiences towards the radical and imaginative thinking necessary to comprehend and successfully navigate a world shaped by climate change.
“We cannot respond successfully to a challenge of this magnitude by asking merely what we should do. At this unique moment we must ask ourselves who we are... [We need] to build the mirror that will show us our fellows and our world in our own reflection.” John Ashton, UK Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change
Proposals can be made by practitioners of any performance discipline, as individuals or groups, by artists on their own or together with partners or producers. Applicants may wish to commission a composer, a writer, a choreographer or work with a range of collaborators as part of a devising process. We recognise that you are likely to undertake additional fundraising from other sources to take the initial commission to production.
This year we are delighted to be able to offer a co-commission with Without Walls, the consortium of 8 of the UK's most strategically significant outdoor arts festivals.
We will be able to sponsor around 6 commissions and will offer awards as follows.
One award of up to £30k (this will be a co-commission between TippingPoint
and Without Walls and should meet the specific criteria outlined below)
One award of up to £25k (TippingPoint Commission)
Two awards of up to £15k (TippingPoint Commission)
One award of up to £10k (TippingPoint Commission)
Two awards of up to £5k (TippingPoint Commission)
If your initial concept would benefit from discussion with or advice from a specialist scientist please say so in your proposal. We will suggest appropriate contacts for shortlisted projects.
Proposals must be submitted by Monday 6th December at 5pm. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to develop ideas a little further and attend an interview.

TippingPoint offers a range of activities centred on exposing creative artists to the enormous challenges of climate change; at the heart of this lies a series of meetings involving very high quality, intense dialogue between artists, scientists and others close to the heart of the issue. Events take place in the UK working in tandem with Oxford University and internationally by working in collaboration with the British Council and other partners. 2009 saw the launch of the inaugural TippingPoint Commissions whereby 3 organisations received financial support to create performative work embracing the theme of climate change.
Without Walls is a consortium of 8 of the UK's most strategically significant outdoor arts festivals. By working together in the pursuit of a set of common goals, over the last 3 years Without Walls has been breaking new ground in the development and creation of outdoor arts in the UK. Outdoor Arts have a universal appeal and are now being recognised for their ability to engage and bring together communities and to shape a sense of place and identity. Without Walls' exciting commissioning opportunities for UK artists are helping raise the bar for free and accessible outdoor arts, demonstrating that excellence and engagement can go hand in hand. The festivals are: Brighton Festival, The Bristol Do, Greenwich + Docklands International Festival, Hat Fair Winchester, Lakes Alive Cumbria, Norfolk & Norwich Festival, Stockton International Riverside Festival, Xtrax Manchester.
The TippingPoint Commissions were launched through a generous award from Major Road.
