Funded Residencies - SculptureSpace
Deadline: December 1, 2010
Twenty artists are selected every year. Each receives a $2000 stipend toward residency expenses. The selection is made by the Sculpture Space Review Committee and a rotating guest panelist. Artists are notified in March of the panel’s decision. Primary criteria are quality, originality, and potential for growth. Non-New York artists pay a nominal fee toward housing. Free housing and $100 transportation stipend are available for New York State artists.
Artists are asked to credit/acknowledge Sculpture Space when the work that they make here is subsequently exhibited or published, and to provide excellent images of their work for our Web site, archives and publications.

The Residency
Artists are scheduled for 11 months (September 2011 –August 2012, excluding December) with no more than four artists in residence at any one time. Artists are expected to stay for a full two months. Residents have access to the open studio 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are responsible for their own materials, specialized tools, fees for work done outside the premises, and for an assistant, should they require one. Residents typically spend approximately $1000 per month on materials and expenses. A basic command of the English language is necessary. Bicycles are provided, however, access to a car is definitely extremely helpful.
Sculpture Space’s studio manager will provide an introductory orientation session, will act as a liaison with suppliers, and can provide technical assistance as needed. Sculpture Space facilities and grounds can accommodate a great variety of projects, both in terms of materials and scale. The City of Utica is supportive of community-based site-specific work. The public is invited to quarterly work-in-progress receptions; other visits occur by appointment.
A personal visit to Sculpture Space is welcomed. Please call to make an appointment.
About Sculpture Space
Sculpture Space is unique in North America for its service to sculptors who come to Utica, NY to make new work. The program has helped advance the careers of over 400 national and international artists since 1976. Artists-in-residence have access to specialized resources available in the Mohawk Valley to make sculpture on a scale which they otherwise might not afford, in a supportive environment conducive to experimentation.
Work that is made and first seen in Utica is often exhibited in galleries, museums and sculpture parks worldwide.
Housing
One shared furnished apartment in a newly renovated purchased two-story house only one block from the studio. Offers four private bedrooms, living room, kitchen, two full bathrooms and laundry. Non-New York State artists are assessed a nominal monthly rent. Artists are responsible for their own meals and transportation. Both the apartment and studio have fully equipped kitchens. No pets are allowed in the studio or the artists’ apartment.
The Studio
The studio is located in downtown Utica, New York, in proximity to light industry and various fabrication shops. The facility consists of 5,000 square feet of open studio, and two 400 square foot private studios for special projects. The space is outfitted with concrete floors, a two-ton system of traveling hoists, and extra-wide overhead doors. The studio has wireless access, and the Artists’ Office has DSL and a G4 computer; artists should bring their own digital equipment. The c. 3 acres of land that surround the building can supplement indoor studio space in the summer. An outdoor work pad is equipped with a 50' monorail hoist and provides an outdoor exhibition area. A maximum of four artists can be accommodated at one time. Sculpture Space is a founding member of the New York State Artists Workspace Consortium, and the Alliance of Artists’ Communities.
