As part of our continued commitment to support our membership, 126 is delighted to announce a call out for for submissions for its 7th Annual Members’ Show. 126 is grateful for the financial and moral support of its members and each year offers this special opportunity to exhibit their work. The members shows are usually selected by the board and have taken place at various times over the years. This year, with generous support from the Galway Arts Festival, we would like to present the work of our members to the international audience that visit the festival from 14th - 27th of July.

To develop this exhibition, we are delighted to announce Paul McAree as curator. McAree is founder of FLOOD, Dublin, a contemporary art project in Dublin city. FLOOD has hosted several group exhibitions including artists Michelle Browne, Alan Butler, Martin Healy, Nevan Lahart, Beatriz Olabarrieta, and Suzanne Treister, a commissioned publication by artist Kevin Atherton, and printed projects with Theresa Nanigian, Terry Atkinson, and Flávia Müller Medeiros. McAree is also Exhibitions and Events Co-ordinator at Lismore Castle Arts in Waterford. Previously McAree worked at Breaking Ground, Tate Modern and Ikon Gallery Birmingham.

While the call for entries is wide open, McAree is particularly interested in work which is conscious of the process of an artwork's journey from studio to gallery, and the questioning and contesting of an artwork's autonomy. This could be work which is concerned with the physicality of its own construction, to work which is overtly about exhibition and display, looking and meaning. 126 invites members to submit work in any medium. In addition an award of a two week residency in the gallery will be made to an artist chosen by the curator and announced at the opening on the 15th July 2014.


Submissions are by email only to [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is June 6th at 4pm. Please title the email “7TH ANNUAL MEMBERS SHOW” and include a description of proposed work (Max 500 words), images of proposed work, an artists statement and CV in PDF FORMAT ONLY.

The financial contribution of our membership is invaluable. It helps support our strong programme of unconventional and international art exhibitions. One year's membership costs €10 to students/unwaged or €20 to those with a wage. You can also support us further by becoming a 'Friend of 126' for €50 or 'Patron of 126' for €250. The Annual Members’ Show is a vital part of 126. It is open to all members and is a great opportunity for emerging artists. We encourage our members to make exhibition proposals throughout the year. In addition to this, 126 members have access to discounted rates on a number of events including  workshops, seminars and screenings. Invitations and opportunities to take part in 126 projects and collaborations throughout the programme year are offered to current 126 members only. This is a new London-based residency, of four weeks, suitable for self-directed and/or research based projects,  open to artists at any stage in their career in any medium (including but not limited to visual art, writing, video, movement, performance, social practice etc.).  

We are especially interested in working with artists who have strategies for reaching audiences without the mediation of traditional institutions or structures.  We are looking for artists who would prefer to have a straightforward connection to society without having their work regarded as mere craft.

We wish to support and learn from artists looking “to produce a different kind of art” who realize it is necessary to step through the standardization and professionalization it promises, and discover a way to access whatever may be on the other side—even if what one finds does not resemble art as we currently understand it… those that believe that art can not be reduced to an economic activity.[1]

This very new residency currently has no external funding support.  It is based on artists enabling and supporting other artists. Rufus Stone is a non-political and non-grant-making collaboration of artists and curators.

This is a self-directed programme suitable for proactive and very independent artists.  We take an enabling role and we are very open to taking a collaborative role depending on the project.

Central London accommodation (in the home of an artist)
Possible rural accommodation (in the home of an artist)
Utilities and administrative costs
Access to wifi; a 24” Mac with Photoshop
Support and assistance in accessing further resources
In person and “virtual” discussions with artists and curators concerning work in progress

Resident provides:

Transport costs to/from London and local transport expenses
Food (breakfast provided)
Pocket money and all project funds

THERE IS NO STUDIO PROVIDED WITH THIS RESIDENCY.  However,  If the work results in a public event, it is possible to use the flat for a reading, talk, installation etc subject to discussion.

Artists are encouraged to seek their own funding through independent grant applications. If selected, the residency can be used as a “matching” contribution in grant applications.  We are willing to be very flexible on dates to accommodate funding arrangements and can ‘hold open’ a residency slot for those in the process of securing grant funding.

Health and other insurance:  The resident is responsible for securing travel insurance which includes health coverage, and will sign a contract releasing Rufus Stone from any liability, personal or otherwise.

Deadlines and dates:  Whilst this is an open call, our first consideration period will commence from midnight 10 July 2014 for residencies to begin mid-September. Applicants will be informed by 30 July.

Selection committee:  A selection committee made up of 4-6 US and London-based artists and curators will consider applications. Unfortunately we will not be able to provide feedback on applications.

Criteria for selection include the following:

Quality of the proposal and prior work
Responsiveness in regards to the specific context of an artist enabled residency (i.e. evidence of being self reliant, pro-active and independent)
Feasibility of the project
Evidence of grant or other funding to cover additional costs
Potential of the recipient of the residency to enable other artists in some capacity

Bloc Projects Artist in Residence Programme UK

OPEN CALL FOR GRADUATE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

The 2014 Bloc Projects Graduate Programme offers a three week residency commencing in July 2014 followed by a two week exhibition in the gallery. The successful applicant will receive a bursary of £200 and tailored mentoring by the Bloc Projects team and invited artists.

Announcing an international photography award with a first prize of $10,000 and publication in a leading photography magazine. A new collaboration between the Cord Prize – established in 2013 – and Source magazine this award will be decided by a panel of four judges from Kyoto, London, Essen and Belfast. Submissions open 15 May and close 13 July. The winner will be announced at the beginning of November.

The prizes consist of an individual first prize of $10,000, a second prize of $1,000 and a third prize of $500. The work selected for first prize will also be published in Source magazine with a commissioned essay. Additionally, twenty-two artists will be selected for online exhibition and everyone submitting will receive a free one-year digital subscription to Source magazine.

The Judges are: Kate Bush (United Kingdom), a leading art curator and critic, specialising in international art and photography; Stefanie Grebe (Germany), visiting curator at the Ruhr Museum, Essen; John Duncan (Northern Ireland), an artist and editor of Source magazine since 1994 and Mariko Takeuchi (Japan), an independent curator, photography critic and associate professor of Kyoto University of Art and Design.

The objective of the award is to discover new work. Submissions are welcome from anywhere in the world and can include up to 16 images.

Background

The award was established as the Cord Prize in 2013 by EA Lindsay, to support contemporary photography. The 2013 judges were Charlotte Cotton and Diana Edkins, and the first prize of $10,000 was won by Eva Stenram for her work Drape. In 2014 Lindsay formed a collaboration with Source magazine to create the Source-Cord Prize. Source is a leading photography magazine that has been published in the UK since 1992.

CARDIFF CONTEMPORARY returns this autumn, with a bigger, bolder profile and lots of new opportunities for artists, designers and makers to get involved through a number of programmes and projects. 

Applicants are invited to apply for project funding up to £3000. As part of a wider festival that will co-ordinate and promote visual arts events and activity throughout the city, Cardiff Council have announced opportunities for both emerging and established artists, creative practitioners and arts organisations. The Council welcomes applications for funding for commissions to produce site-responsive work exploring the festival theme of 'Reveal and Conceal', using wit and imagination to engage the public.

2014 will see the first Hospitalfield international summer school take place from 30 June to 2 July. Hospitalfield have worked with Isla Leaver-Yap to devise and programme this event.

The summer school will start on the evening of Monday, June 30, and continue until the evening of Wednesday, July 2.

Fieldwork: Reports On Event Curating is a three-day conversation to unpack the curatorial presentation of durational art work, namely the event.

FIELDWORK addresses the mechanics behind event production: the use of the event as a short-circuit within or an alternative to the space of exhibition production; the changing intentions of documentation in shaping the event, both prior to and as postscript; the role of curatorial qualifications and schooling in engendering customised knowledge about and established formats for the event; and the conflicts between the arrival of the event and the location in which it occurs.

With reports by international curators Isla Leaver-Yap, Fionn Meade, Sam Korman, Vivian Ziherl and parallel conversations hosted by Gerrie Van Noord and Sarah Cook that explore the role of the event in local contexts, Fieldwork presents the event as a space of circulation and becoming.

We are offering camping spaces in Hospitalfield's beautiful grassy paddock, sheltered by trees and overlooking the sea. The summer school is fully catered with delicious produce from Hospitalfield's kitchen.


Hospitalfield Arts residencies, summer schools, courses, and residential study visits are now taking bookings for 2014–2016, and are interested in new partnerships. We can collaborate on content and connections if required.

Hospitalfield Arts is a contemporary art organisation, with a programme of residencies and public events, set within the exceptional heritage environment of Hospitalfield House which was left in trust for the support of artists in 1890.

In 2014 we are working with contemporary artist, writers and choreographers including Claire Barclay, Janice Parker, Fiona Jardine and Sue Tomkins and in 2015 we will work with Graham Fagen for Scotland's presentation at the Venice Biennale, and also present a series of four open season events in Arbroath. Hospitalfield House has a long association with contemporary culture from Sir Walter Scott, through to the artist Patrick Allan-Fraser, who was a key figure in our history, and as an art school and residency centre for artists for over 100 years.

Balmoral fellowships and project, foreign and exchange fellowships for 2015

Preconditions
The conditions for all fellowships with the exception of the curator fellowship are a completed course of study in art (MFA or comparable degree) and two to three years (depending on the respective fellowship) of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of the studies until the beginning of the fellowship. Applications are also possible for autodidacts distinguished by special artistic achievements, as documented by exhibitions and prizes.

To foster artistic dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge of German or English is expected.


I. International residential fellowships
Six residential fellowships will be awarded to international visual artists. For the residencies for 2015, applicants’ artistic work should focus on or have some connection with or make reference to Dada. Dada was the impulse behind a great many developments, and has a great many facets. Methods of expression such as photomontage, collage, material pictures, assemblage, object art and room installation all owe their origins to the Dadaists. In the years after Dada, the boundaries between painting, performance, literature and music came to be more and more blurred and overcome. The far-reaching influence of Dada can be seen from the Pop Art and Fluxus art of the 1960s to '80s through to ready-mades and multiples, performance, happening and concrete poetry. What role does Dada play today?

Since 2013, fellowships are offered in one artistic genre or one theme each year. This offering, which is unique in Germany, is intended to enable deeper mutual creative cross-fertilization among the resident artists. It will also lead to a more intensive specialist exchange of ideas with external artists, speakers, teachers, curators, etc.

Two fellowships last three months and four fellowships last nine months. All residential fellowships run from June each year.

The residential fellowships are endowed with 1,400 EUR a month and include free accommodation in the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.


II. International curator fellowship
To foster dialog between artistic work and theoretical reflection, Balmoral awards a residential curator fellowship to a fellow in the humanities (preferably art history). The curator fellowship is awarded to persons whose university degree (at least MA) was completed not more than five years ago. For the curator fellowship, mastery of the German language spoken and in writing as well as good knowledge of English is essential.

The fellowship lasts nine months and begins in June 2015. It is endowed with 1,400 EUR per month and includes free accommodation in the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral.


III. Project, foreign and exchange fellowships exclusively for artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate
Relation to Rhineland-Palatinate means (and/or) is born in, has studied in, has lived or lives in, has worked or works in Rhineland-Palatinate.

– Two six-month project fellowships (not tied to any site)
– One six-month fellowship for New York (Flux Factory/Residency Unlimited)
– One three-month fellowship for South Korea (Changdong or Goyang Art Studio)
– Two six-month fellowships for the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris
– One five-month fellowship for Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, Brandenburg/Germany

The project, foreign and exchange fellowships are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month (except for South Korea).


Awarding of fellowships
A jury of specialists will award all fellowships, taking into consideration the developmental potential of the applicant’s artistic or theoretical work.
