Mystery Build is offering $21,000 in cash awards to participants who can create something amazing using only the materials provided in this kit, without knowing what they will have to work with. Entries are due on or before Oct. 20th, 2014.

Mystery Build is about being resourceful and inventive. You'll use materials in surprising ways, while creating a work of art and competing against other creators nationwide.

Create your project individually or as a team, and create as many projects as you want, using multiple kits.

What's inside?
We can't tell you! You can expect to find some common sculpting materials like clay, wood, metal, fiber, and plenty of surprises. The kits are 12" x 9" x 3.5" and contain about 5 lbs. of materials. In addition to what's in the kit, you can also use the cardboard box as a material, and you may add liquids including paint and liquid adhesives.
All 2014 Mystery Build Kits contain the same materials.

How to participate?
Order your Mystery Build Kit and we'll ship it to you free of charge. Your purchase includes your materials kit and your contest entry fee. When you receive your kit you'll find a username and password which you'll use to enter the competition. Be sure to document your creative process with photos and/or video.

An International Competitive Exhibit of Works By or About Systems

SYSTEMATIC seeks to collect and examine works of visual art or design which in their form, production, or concept offer insight into the nature and effects of systems. This exhibition concept offers a very wide window through which artists, designers, and others may interpret and apply their work. For this purpose 'systems' is being defined loosely as processes or information made up of routines or rules, by which 'inputs' are converted into 'outputs' through a consistent orderly method.

For example, works may themselves be products epitomizing systematic processes, may simply be illustrative of such processes (i.e. an image of machines in a factory system), or may be imitations of systematic products or results. Systems may be tangible physical processes, or conceptual/political/philosophical processes.

The goal is to reveal how such a modern concept such as 'system', one which affects so much of our daily lives, shows up in visual art, illustration, or design. It is also to inspire deeper consideration of this fact on the part of the visitors to the gallery - to  reveal the interconnected processes into which they themselves provide fuel, directly or indirectly through participation or consumption.

This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type or style of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental. The only criteria beyond excellent quality is that works must clearly feature systems as their process, subject, concept, or form.

Call to Artists – Cash Awards – Juried Exhibit  

Embracing Our Differences is accepting submissions for its 11th annual outdoor art exhibit celebrating diversity to be displayed during April - May 2014 in Sarasota, FL USA. Submissions must be postmarked no later than January 6, 2014. National and international submissions are encouraged.  39 artists will be selected for the exhibit. Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 1,600,000 visitors. Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of art professionals. A total of $3,000 (US) in awards will be presented. There is no submission fee nor limit on the number of entries.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has appointed EMP Projects to work with them to develop and manage a public art programme for the Penarth Learning Community.

Penarth Learning Community (PLC) is an exciting new building for St Cyres School and a new school, Ysgol y Deri to accommodate the existing SEN schools, Ysgol Erw’r Delyn, Ysgol Maes Dyfan and Ashgrove. This is a key facility for the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s 21st Century Schools Investment Programme with funding for the scheme provided by Welsh Government.

We would like to engage an artist with a strong, international reputation and a practice, who is sympathetic to the principles of this project. The artist is expected to work intensively with the staff, pupils and the design team to identify opportunities for an external artwork(s) within the grounds of PLC. The commission could be in the for of:

• A standalone or integrated artwork within the landscaping, which would create character and provide an opportunity for educational expression for pupils.
• The development of bespoke functional outdoor artworks and teaching facilities (such as shelter structures, sensory gardens and bespoke play areas.)

The overall budget for this commission is £49,000.00

Now open for entries, the Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year competition is an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography and film.  Honouring amateurs and professionals of all ages, it provides an opportunity for photographers to share images of environmental and social issues with international audiences, and to enhance our understanding of the causes, consequences and solutions to climate change and social inequality.

Following a hugely successful first year partnership, Atkins, one of the world's leading design, engineering and project management consultancies, are once again sponsoring the competition, allowing for two significant improvements this year. 2014 sees the introduction of the Atkins Cityscape Prize of £1,000, and it is hoped that the competition will be open to more photographers this year, as it is now free to enter.

one-month vacancy - December 2013

RAID Projects' long-running artist-in-residence program has a one-month vacancy for December of this year (2013).

RAID Projects provides a bedroom and studio within it's shared converted facility.  Our program is an artist-run, cooperatively facilitated, semi-communal operation within the heart of the Los Angeles contemporary art community.  RP generally accommodates up to two AIRs in our facility, which also houses rented studio space and another live-in artist.

Details on the available space:

Bedroom – 14.5 x 11 feet. (3.5 x 4.5 meters)
Studio – 14.5 x 22 feet. (4.5 x 6.5 meters)
Ceiling height is 12 feet. (3.5 meters)
A one-time reduced residency fee of $1,200 US applies after acceptance, in addition to a $300 refundable deposit. This covers use of the bedroom, studio and common kitchen, WC and other areas, as well as all utilities and wi-fi internet. 

The artist-directors of RP all financially contribute to the costs of running the program and all work is entirely volunteer based. The costs for the AIR are kept as low as possible and help cover all the maintenance, overhead, and exhibition programming, and are shared by the artist-directors and studio rentals. It is RAID Projects' goal to provide an artists-run space for the making of art and participating in the Los Angeles contemporary art community and is not recommended for artists expecting luxury accommodations, preferential treatment, or a vacation resort experience.

"Fishing for a Better Environment" 

Artists from all countries are invited to send a proposal for a site-specific outdoor sculpture installation that will celebrate the seafood producers and fishermen of Cheng Long village in Taiwan and raise awareness about environmental issues relating to seafood production, the main livelihood of Cheng Long residents.  The artworks will be created during a 25-day artist-in-residency in Taiwan working with the community and school children from April 10 to May 5, 2014.  Selected artists will receive a stipend (about US$2000), round trip airfare, accommodations and meals, volunteer help and free recycled and natural materials.

Who: The Espy Photography award invites submissions from visual artists involved in the practice of Photography.

What: This year’s exhibition will once again be held at Elysium gallery, Swansea, UK and wants photographers to engage with the topic of Urban & Rural. Espy wants to encourage traditional photography along with modern and experimental techniques.

Details: There is a prize total of £1200. There will be the main Espy award (£800), a student prize (£200) and people’s prize (£200). This year’s judges are 2001 turner prize shortlisted artist Richard Billingham and Photography program coordinator of Coleg Sir Gar, Wales, Iain Davies.

Submission fee: £15 (£5 students) each artist can submit up to 5 pieces of work.
Deadline for submissions: 07/02/2014 (work will be judged between 10th – 14th Feb and artists will be notified by 17th February)

We develop a sense of place through experience and knowledge of the history, relationships, culture, architecture, geography, and geology of an area. Elysium Gallery is looking for work based on the topic of Urban & Rural. With the boundaries between the two becoming increasingly blurred by contemporary life, with all of its luxuries and freedoms, people have started living their lives in different ways, rendering conventional and separate definitions obsolete. As the population and our economy grow so does the opportunity to profit from the countryside’s violation and it begins to disappear. The towns and cities expand and the rural landscape is increasingly replaced by the Urban, with its ‘green spaces’ planned by professional architects. Surely something is lost in the process? Is the notion of Urban & Rural now becoming irrelevant or as we continue to explore and inhabit every square mile of the earth mean it is more important than ever to have those separate?

Residency Opportunity - Berwick Visual Arts and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2014

Berwick Visual Arts is pleased to announce applications are now open for its annual residency opportunity in partnership with Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival.

The residency is an opportunity for an artist working with moving image to create a new piece of work in response to the 2014 festival theme of 'Border Crossing' and have the resulting work premiered at the festival.

In 2014 the festival will take it's starting point as Berwick's position at the heart of what was once known as the 'debatable lands,' with an identity neither English nor Scottish but all of its own, the festival will cross borders, exploring border identities all over the world.

The residency opportunity is open to UK and internationally based artists who have been out of college (BA graduate) for a minimum of 3 years. Those who have completed an MA and /or PhD are also welcome to apply.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to their artistic practice and evidence a body of work and strong track record, through new work, projects, exhibitions, publishing, and/or commissions. Part of this track record should be specifically in moving image work, though we applications from artists working across different art forms.

The artist will be expected to live and work in Berwick for the 6 month residency period and start at an agreed date between February and April 2014.

Shortlisted artists will be invited for interview on Tuesday 17th December 2013 in Berwick-upon-Tweed. International artists will be invited to interview via Skype.

The interview panel will consist of representatives from Berwick Visual Arts, Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, Arts Council England and Marcus Coates, Artist and Co-founder of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival.
