Due to many artists’ requests, Passion for Freedom decided to extend the submission deadline to Friday 27th September. We have been delighted with the number and quality of entries so far and want to ensure that as many people as possible have the time to deliver their works from overseas and various places.

Passion for Freedom asks artists to respond to 3 questions:
1. WHAT IS FREEDOM?
2. HOW EASY IS IT TO LOSE IT?
3. HOW HARD IS IT TO GET IT BACK?

The exhibition resulting from this will be held in November at the UNIT24 gallery next to Tate Modern. The annual international competition is a rare collection of works of "courageous artists" in the categories of film, photography, painting, sculpture, publications, performance and other forms of artistic expression. So far the festival has featured more than 150 artists from all over the world, including AiWeiWei, Jafar Panahi, Sarah Maple, Steve Rosenthal, Fiona Dent, Robb Leech, among others.

This year shortlisted artists will have an opportunity to exhibit works together with special guest artists: Mehdi-Georges Lahlou and Firoozeh Bazrafkan. Mehdi-Georges Lahlou is a French Maroccan artist who produces performances and installations that deal with humour both cultural identities and “gender”, to the point of dissolving the one in the others. Firoozeh Bazrafkan is an Iranian artist noted for making provocative statements celebrates the Islamic Revolution in Iran in her own way.

 The works will be judged by the international Selection Panel including Anda Rottenberg (former Minister of Culture in Poland), Deeyah (Muslim Madonna from United States), Sarah Maple (well-known young British artist) and Nick Cohen (Journalist and Writer from UK).

The festival will take place at the UNIT24 Gallery next to the Tate Modern (20 Great Guildford Street, London SE1 0FD) from 02.11-09.11. The art competition is organised by Passion for Freedom, an independent group of friends standing up for freedom of speech and artistic expression. The Van Eyck is a postacademic institute that has turned into an international multiform organization for fine art, design, and reflection. We are a multidisciplinary institute that furthers experiment, research, study, production and exchange. In our institute promising artists, designers, and curators are given the time and space that is needed to develop their talents, to discover as yet unexplored perspectives and delve into deeper layers of their selves.

Artist-in-residence at RAID Projects, Los Angeles, CA

Immediate artist-in-residence opportunity at RAID Projects, Los Angeles, CA, USA 
Bedroom with attached studio space available from Sept 1st - Jan 31st.

RAID Projects offers  a bedroom and adjoining studio for a contemporary visual artist to come to Los Angeles, make new work, network with commercial galleries and curators, and explore Los Angeles. The current fee is $1,300 US per month.  RAID hosts a regular contemporary exhibition program, as well as other related events.  A community of artists live and work in the shared facility, and has been in continual operation for over a decade. 

RAID's AIR program will be ending in early 2014, but we have one final spot to fill before then.  The AIR accommodations are for working artists; the facility is operated out of a converted industrial space on the grounds of the Brewery Art Colony. 

The AIR program at RAID is artist-run, semi-communal and cooperatively operated with common living room, kitchen, WC, and shower facilities shared by the resident artists and full time residents who live and work under it's roof.  The full time resident artists, including the director, all financially contribute to the costs of running RAID Projects and all work is entirely volunteer based.   

The costs for the AIR are kept as low as possible and help cover all the maintenance, overhead, and exhibition program, and are shared by the artist-directors and studio rentals.  RAID Projects is an artists-run space for the making of art and is not recommended for artists expecting luxury accommodations, preferential treatment, or a vacation resort experience. 

The downstairs space is approximately: Bedroom - 14.5 x 11 feet. (3.5 x 4.5 meters) Studio - 14.5 x 22 feet. (4.5 x 6.5 meters).  Ceiling height is 12 feet. (3.5 meters)  The space is currently available from Sept 1st, 2013 - Jan 31st, 2014.  Potential residents may apply for the full time or part; residents wishing to start immediately will be given preference.  No pets, live music, or use of overly-hazardous materials will be permitted.  A deposit in the amount of $1,300 will be required to secure the residency once accepted, to be refunded up to 30 days after the end of the residency, if all residency terms and conditions have been met.

The Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) in Boston, MA is seeking qualifications from artists interested in working to plan, design and create permanent art as part of a re-designed BCA Plaza.  The Plaza is a one-block, brick-paved space that serves as the “front porch” to the BCA.  It currently contains a garden,  outdoor seating for two restaurants (seasonal), an ATM kiosk, plus various signs and benches.  The Plaza is sometimes used for a variety of performances, though there is not a set performance space, as well as an annual temporary public art installation.  What it lacks – and what we’d like this process to address – is the presence of art and artists.  When this project is complete, we want it to be clear to anyone on or approaching the Plaza, whether by car or foot, that this is a place where art lives and artists work.

From this RFQ, three finalists will be invited to interview, and one will be selected for the final commission.  The initial $20,000 commission will cover planning and preliminary design, including artist fee and travel for planning and finalized design.  The Artist should expect to visit the site and spend significant time with the project architects and in meetings with community and project stakeholders. Excellent presentation and communication skills are a must. The final commission will be awarded to the selected artist after the planning process is completed and approved; this final commission will cover fabrication, insurance, transportation, installation, and coordination with contractor.  The total budget for the commission of the final work is expected to be approximately $150,000 - $200,000.

Amsterdam Open call Exhibition  Project "Myths and legends of Eastern Europe" is an international project.  It is an opportunity to advance your artistic career on the international art scene and is open to all artists worldwide. We welcome entries from all age ranges and experience levels, from upcoming talents to established practitioners.   

Project "The Myths and legend of Eastern Europe" will comprise of the exhibition taking place from 23.11.2013 - 14.12.2013 at the Gallery LWW in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The Project will present selected works from 12 artists selected from an open submission. Will be published catalog with works and CV of all the selected artists.    

Project "Myths and legends of Eastern Europe"

From time immemorial the East has been believed to be the area of wisdom whereas the West was seen as the zone of practical implementation of synthetic ideas. Evolutionary loops, moving from east to west and back, generate extrapolated and sometimes grotesque cultural stereotypes. The archetype of place and space has a certain effect on the structure of the external manifestations of human emotions and cultural ideologies. This is where the West perceives the eastern part of Europe as something mysterious, as the place where the world is similar to the alternative reality. However, the eastern peoples themselves consider their own soul as a kind of mystery. It is misunderstood and obscure to the end. In the minds of people there used to live a religious principle, then it was replaced by the communist ideology during the days of the Soviet Union. This basis also disappeared with the collapse of the gigantic empire. The past is forever gone and the present is in the process of formation.  Philosophical views are like disassembled puzzles of a tangled labyrinth. Ideology that unites society is blurred. Precisely during such periods there come moments to form myths, myths that organize society. There comes a period of comprehension of self-identity. Artists meld the chaos of space with the fragmentation of consciousness and thus form a new mental world. A world that reveals the essence of things, the depth of all processes that are taking place in Eastern Europe. The exhibits are a focus of thoughts and set concrete form to the floating space of abstract ideas. New vectors of development are taking place. A comprehension of mentality and the process of probing the new codes of mythologies is occurring.

The first aim of this project is an attempt to familiarize the residents of the Far West with the myths and legends of the newly formed East. It is the place where the newborn self-identity manifests itself in the flows of human mentalities, one that constructs new myths that become visible to the rest of the world.

The second aim is an attempt to look at the East through the eyes of Western Europeans.

W-CA are proud to present the second juried exhibition of 2013, the focus of this open call exhibition is contemporary photographic responses to Landscape. In 2010 W-CA were asked to co-curate the Contemporary Art Society collection which was acquired in 2001 under the galleries ‘contemporary landscape collection policy.’
Worcester City Art Gallery has collected contemporary art for 150 years, building up an outstanding collection, particularly strong in landscapes.  The Worcester City Museum collection, of which fine art is an important part alongside natural history, archaeology and social history, focuses on the shaping of the English landscape.  Worcestershire’s landscape tells the story of England, from the geology of the Malvern Hills to the town planning ‘rape of Worcester’ which drove modern conservation movements. There have been two major pushes to purchase contemporary art: one between the opening of the current museum building in 1896 and the First World War; and the second at the turn of the 21st century.  In the early 1900s, many paintings were purchased direct from the artists including favourites such as Chadding on Mounts Bay by Stanhope Forbes.  From 1998-2003, Worcester was one of a small number of museum collections working with the Contemporary Art Society on the Special Collections Scheme.  Paintings, photographs and film work were purchased from artists and galleries internationally for the Worcester collection through funding from the Arts Lottery and the Elmley Foundation.

SFAI is currently seeking applications for the Fall 2014 Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship. Established in 1998 by the generosity of the family of painter Richard Diebenkorn—both an alumnus and longtime faculty member of SFAI—the Fellowship provides an opportunity for artists to teach at SFAI and have sufficient time and financial support to work in the studio. Through its semester-long structure that includes a residency with studio at Headlands Center for the Arts, the Fellowship not only offers each participating artist an invaluable opportunity to further their own studio work, it also leaves a deep, lasting impression on SFAI's students. This year's Fellowship is open only to artists who reside in the United States and outside of the Bay Area. Artists must apply by the deadline of Friday, November 1, 2013. Eligibility
Applications are sought from early to mid-career artists who have an established body of work and exemplary exhibition record in the media of painting and drawing. Applicants must reside within the United States and outside of the Bay Area. (In alternate years, the Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship is awarded to Bay Area residents.) The review committee will consider the applicant's experience and his or her appropriateness to the SFAI mission and curriculum, as well as quality of work and written statements.

Fellowship Award
The Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellow will receive 25,000 USD in compensation to teach two courses in the Fall 2014 semester, give a public lecture in the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series (VAS), and engage with the SFAI community through individual student critiques, academic programs, and activities. Fellows are expected to be in residence full-time during the fellowship, August 25–December 5, 2014.

This prestigious award has been given to fourteen artists since 1998, including Brad Brown, Shaun O'Dell, Iona Rozeal Brown, Josephine Taylor, Monica Majoli, Polly Apfelbaum, and Liam Everett.

The Fellow will also receive a residency at Headlands Center for the Arts. The residency includes housing, an 800-square-foot studio, five chef-prepared meals each week, and access to shared vehicles. Artists in Residence are encouraged to engage with other residents and participate in the dynamic creative community of the Center.

Headlands Center for the Arts is situated in a rehabilitated military fort in the Golden Gate National Park, 15 minutes outside of San Francisco. The Artist in Residence (AIR) program awards residencies to artists from across the globe, working in nearly every artistic discipline. In addition, Headlands presents public programs including artist talks, exhibitions, community dinners, performances, and Open Houses, all toward the goal of facilitating meaningful interaction between artists and the public. City of Sydney: Public art to transform Sydney’s City Centre

Public art to transform Sydney's City Centre

Over the next ten years, Sydney's city centre and George Street, its main north-south artery, will be transformed. The transformation of the city centre and George Street is one of the most significant public works projects to occur in Australia in generations, as detailed in the draft George Street Concept Design.

Public art commissioned for Sydney's city centre and George Street will play a major role in the transformation, as detailed in the City Centre Public Art Plan.

In keeping with the City of Sydney's commitment to sustainability, light rail will be implemented by the New South Wales State Government from 2014 along George Street as part of an extensive network connecting outlying areas to the heart of Sydney. Reinforcing the amenity represented by the re-introduction of light rail, vehicular traffic will be removed from a section of George Street.

According to the Public Art Plan, in the reconfigured city centre, works of art, comfortable seating, shade, and plantings will go hand-in-hand with improved design and sustainability, creating spaces people will want to spend time in.

To challenge preconceived notions of public art, the research for the City of Sydney's City Centre Public Art Plan has been rigorous and its recommendations are wide-ranging. Sydney's public art must aspire to match the excellence already achieved in Australian architectural projects and the uniqueness seen in our landscapes.

A legacy of new permanent works of art will be created to underscore the civic and historic importance of George Street, Australia's first street. Works of art are sought that will unify the street and be highly memorable—possessing a gravitas and landmark quality equivalent to that of Sydney's great civic buildings and spaces.

In a second brief, artists will have the opportunity to conceive art to address the east-west connecting streets that cross George Street. The Plan identifies five priority sites for art in the city centre, with works of art for George Street and the east-west connecting streets crossing George Street the first projects to be realised.

Sydney is Australia's international gateway and only global city. It is Australia's largest and most densely-populated city, a multicultural village that is home to more than 200 nationalities.

Sydney has been the beneficiary of the achievements of many artists over the years, apparent in the number of works of art already in existence and part of the City of Sydney's public art collection. The City Centre Public Art Plan provides the opportunity for new art projects to be integrated into the fabric of a city. New legacy works of art commissioned for Sydney's city centre will assume great significance, become familiar to residents, and be seen by visitors to Sydney from around the world.

The City Centre Public Art Plan stresses the importance of the role of artists who will be involved in the project in its earliest stages and in collaboration with the urban designers shaping this project. The aim is to bring together an amazing group of artists over the next ten years by appealing to the most inventive and exciting practitioners working today. The process of identifying and selecting artists will be open and inclusive. By casting a wide net and insisting on a superior level of quality and ability among artists, diverse and iconic new works of public art will add another, dynamic layer to the impressive array of works of art realised by the City of Sydney to date.

Commencing 28 August through to 31 October 2013, the City of Sydney will invite artists to submit Expressions of Interest for two city centre sites: George Street and the major East-West Connecting streets (crossing George Street).
