The theme explores the ways in which the Right and Left side of the brain process information differently and the behavioral science that occurs when a person generally uses one side more than the other.

The exhibition space consists of two connected rooms. The first exploring the left side's linear tendencies for processng mathematics, logical reasoning and analytical thinking and the right room represents the right side of the brain that uses intuition,creativity and distills information from a whole visual outcome to fragmented parts.

We are accepting proposals of all art forms;
painting, print, sculpture, installation, performance, video and photography that reflect or explore either the right or left brain side tendencies.

Requirements for application are CV, Short statement, 5 to 10 images or sketches and a short detailed proposal..

Exhibition opens on November 5th 2011 as part of 'Nacht und Nebel' and will run for 4/5weeks.

Asian Contemporary Arts Consortium Writing Fellowship, San Francisco, CA

Call for Entries - Writing Fellowship

Art Practical, the online journal for visual arts criticism in the Bay Area, and the Asian Contemporary Arts Consortium San Francisco (ACAC-SF) announce a new writing fellowship and invite entries for its inaugural year this fall.

While the Bay Area has a diverse and vibrant visual arts scene, there is little visibility for critical dialogue that contextualizes issues in Asian contemporary art. By providing a platform for emerging writers, the Asian Contemporary Arts Consortium Writing Fellowship (ACAC Fellow) aims to promote and encourage critical thinking and writing on Asian contemporary art practices and discourses, with a particular emphasis on the events and exhibitions in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Bay Area visual arts community positions itself within a global context; this fellowship will encourage the recipient to examine where the intersections lie between artists of Asian descent living and working in the Bay Area, those living and working internationally, and artists of non Asian descent living in Asia. Therefore, while priority will be given to exhibitions and events in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Fellow will not be restricted solely to coverage of this region. The winning entrant will be named the ACAC Fellow and will receive a $1,000 honorarium in support of his or her contributions as a writer for Art Practical. Over the course of a year, the ACAC Fellow will work under the direction of the magazine’s editorial team to contribute six reviews to Art Practical, with the potential to write a feature length article and to collaborate with Art Practical ’s partner Bad at Sports on a podcast interview. Art Practical encourages emerging writers to refine their practice amidst those already renowned for their critical insight and provides valuable professional development through its rigorous editorial process.

Grizzly Grizzly is Philadelphia project space devoted to emerging and under-represented artists.

For the November 2011 exhibition ‘Other Possible Titles,’ Grizzly is looking for inventive work for inclusion in a juried, group show. Work in any medium – sculpture, wall work, video art, installation, etc- is encouraged.

There is a catch. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Grizzly Grizzly will allow visitors to vote on their favorite work. The artist receiving the most votes will receive a solo exhibition in the 2012 gallery season.

All work for Other Possible Titles will be juried by the members of Grizzly Grizzly. The artist that wins the audience vote will receive a solo show in 2012. All visitors to the gallery, whether they have submitted work or not, are entitled to vote for their favorite work.

We, at Grizzly Grizzly trust you — our audience. We know that you see vast amounts of art in person and through books, magazines, and the internet. By giving you the ability to determine a future show, we hope to leverage your knowledge, experience and passion for art to help us define our audience and in turn, to create a deeper and more meaningful engagement.

Grizzly Grizzly is a meeting-ground for dialogue. Speak and we will listen.

LIVING COPENHAGEN, Call for Participants/Students

Living is complicated. So too, is the manner in which our living is affected, the spaces we occupy and our perceptions of these spaces.

In the 21st Century, our urban spaces have become the testing ground for livability. In Copenhagen, this has become the Modus operandi for the municipality. Wanting to be known as "the most livable city in the world", Copenhagen has progressively implemented strategies and tactics to achieve this status. But also, as Copenhagen explores the most effective means of achieving livability, it can also learn from outsiders researching and experimenting in its spaces.

How do we experiment and challenge the city as a symbiotic operation to critically engage city administrators and community members in building a more livable place? One way begins with our intimate and interior spaces, how those start to form and facilitate external relationships that become progressively more complex and challenging as they move from the private to the public.

The practice of everyday life starts to not just inform the identity of the spaces we occupy, but the way we ourselves operate –as artists, designers and human beings. Space here is not just a passive entity, but an agent in forming and informing who we are and how we can live – questions that are gaining more and more importance in an increasingly globalized world that is characterized by the conflicts between difference and homogeneity, the global and the local, individuum and collective,...

During January through May 2012, the School of Critical Engagement, in partnership with the city of Copenhagen and Wooloo will launch it's next phase of experimentation and action for a sixteen-week project, testing out methods of practice, artist-asethnographer research, and semi-permanent public space installations. This phase is part of a five-year project with the city. Participants will be hosted in different and diverse living situations and explore and test experimental practices that transcend the traditional silos of architecture, landscape architecture, public art, urban design and planning, etc.

It is only through such approaches that spatial design, planning disciplines and public art can engage the 'public' once again, and regain their social and cultural relevance. Working from the inside out, and working in collaboration with residents, stakeholders and Copenhagen-based art and design practices, we will create a body of work and prototypes that will be presented to the city as proposals for permanent realizable projects in the city. Our partners in production include Wooloo, Supertanker, Copenhagen Institute for Interaction Design, and Onesto Mong.

Ideas and concepts will also be accessed and generated with critical feedback from practitioners at BIG, Julien de Smedt Architects, Jan Gehl Architects, Superflex and Nils Norman. Our semi-permanent public space installations will be left intact throughout the summer of 2012 to provide opportunities for observation and data collection that will inform the next phases of the project, continuing in the autumn of 2012.

LIVING COPENHAGEN is open to graduate and post-graduate level students and practitioners in art, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, film, sociology, economics, community developers, anthropology, cultural geography - to people that have a critical interest in the interaction between humans and the spaces they occupy.

Theme:
We are inviting submissions in water-based medium on or with paper.
The competition has an environmental agenda requesting submissions to reference the contrary character of climate change. For example, increased desertification and the escalating effects of weather events such as flooding and soil erosion.
The work should be based on observation, experience and invention. It must be as involved with the process and materials of painting/drawing etc. as with the response to climate change.
We are interested in works that invite close scrutiny and, like environmental events in the world around us, reveal themselves gradually and steadily over time, prompting reaction and renewed contemplation of the ecological challenges the world faces.

Prize:
A two week residency at Cortijada Los Gázquez / Joya: arte + ecología, Andalucía, Spain including travel costs within Europe (not accommodation while in transit). Winners from outside of Europe can have their travel expenses paid once they are within the EU.
The winner will have sole use of a thirty square meter studio and 20 hectares of land for the period. Accommodation and meals are included as is collection and return to the nearest public transport system. Resident artists will be featured on the Joya: arte + ecología web page, which will include biographical information and images. The work undertaken during the residency will also be documented and entered into our archive.

Application:
There is an administration fee of 15€ per application allowing submission of up to three images.
Applicants should e-mail [email protected] with their name, address and passport number/ID (Spanish legal requirement) stating their intent to enter whereupon they will receive instructions on paying the entry fee via PayPal.
Once the administration fee is paid applicants are invited to submit up to three images at 300dpi and a maximum dimension of 1000 pixels on the longest side. Please do not send individual e-mails exceeding 1mb. Several e-mails will suffice.
We will also require a statement contextualising the submission of no more than 250 words in English or Spanish.
The application should include up to 1 link, where images etc. of their work can be found as well as the name and contact of someone who can act as a referee.

Artists from across making disciplines are invited to submit proposals for Jerwood Makers Open, a £37,500 exhibition and commissioning opportunity from Jerwood Visual Arts.

The second in the series, Jerwood Makers Open has been developed to create a space in which to recognise and celebrate the significance of making practice and process within contemporary visual arts. This initiative offers makers at the early stages of their careers an opportunity to develop their creative ideas independently of specific commissioning structures.

Five commissions of £7,500 will be awarded to artists to create new work, which will be exhibited as part of the JVA programme at Jerwood Space, London. Artists will be chosen by an independent selection panel and must be a UK resident and within 10 years of graduating or setting up their practice.

All applicants are required to submit:
• An 800 word statement outlining the proposal for new work or works; why they want to make the work(s)/how they perceive the opportunity will benefit and develop their practice; and the materials and processes to be used. Please also include a brief timescale for making (from concept development to completion and delivery of work) and a brief outline budget.
• A current CV
• A maximum of six images of current work or work in progress (files no larger than 500kb)

The Djerassi Resident Artists Program in partnership with UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists is offering a One-Month Bursary/Residency for one Visual Artist during the 2012 season.

Applications will be accepted from (non-US) artists living in developing countries who are between 25 and 35 years of age. The Aschberg Bursaries Programme gives priority to artists and institutions in developing countries, in order to enhance North-South and South-South cooperation.

The bursaries are intended for professional artists wishing to enrich their careers by acquiring experience abroad. Students are not eligible.

The Residency
This will include a private work studio, living space, all meals, local transportation; and UNESCO–Bursary Programe will provide and manage the travel arrangements, a round-trip airfare at best rates in economy class to the San Francisco International Airport.
The selected artist is responsible for working materials and personal necessities. No other financial support is granted. Educational components such as artist workshops and/or classes are NOT offered as a part of this bursary.

The Djerassi Program is located in a spectacular rural setting in the Santa Cruz Mountains over-looking the Pacific Ocean, yet is within easy driving distance of San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area. Each four-week residency session is comprised of eight artists in the disciplines of visual arts, media arts, music composition, choreography and literature. It is designed as a retreat experience to pursue personal creative work and share in collegial interaction within a small community of artists. In this spirit residents are expected to commit themselves for the entire bursary session awarded to them.
The Visual Arts Studio has large wall space with high ceilings, a sink, fluorescent and incandescent lighting, skylights, separate sleeping loft, and a wood burning stove. There is also a large covered area outside where artists may work on projects.

Deadline:
Applications must be postmarked by October 31, 2011 for a bursary/residency in 2012.

Applicants will be notified of selection by email in February 2012.

Eligibility:
The bursaries are designed only for non-US citizens in developing countries.
The Aschberg Bursaries Programme is only intended for professional artists wishing to enrich their careers and by acquiring experience abroad. Students are not eligible.
The bursary is for the selected laureate only. The Djerassi Program does not offer accommodations to spouses, family members, children, or pets.

Candidates must be between 25 to 35 years old.

Language:
Laureates must have a speaking and comprehensive knowledge of the English language.
Laureates’ obligations:
The laureates agree to participate in the activities organized and/or offered by the host institution. The goal of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme is to engage artists in a cultural exchange that is beneficial to all.

The laureates must also provide a report at the end of their residency to describe their experience, their interaction with the local community and the benefits they derived from their stay. This testimony will include samples of their work, which will be posted online in the Virtual Gallery of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme.
