Fundación Telefónica is calling for submissions to the international VIDA awards. This is the thirteenth iteration of this competition that awards artworks created with artificial life technologies and associated disciplines, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, chaotic algorithms, computer viruses, bio-technology, virtual environments and sound sculpture. Since the competition was first held 842 artists from 30 countries have participated and more than 115 projects have won awards.
As in previous years, the contest consists in two categories: Finished Projects and Production Incentives. The closing date for project submissions is November 7th.
The Finished Projects category is for artworks produced since September 2008 with artificial life technologies. There is a total of 40,000 euros in awards for the three projects selected by the jury (18,000 euros for first prize; 14,000 euros for second prize and 8,000 euros for third prize). In addition, there will be seven honourable mentions for outstanding projects chosen by the jury from among the finalists.
The Production Incentives category is designed to help fund yet-to-be-produced artistic projects related to artificial life. It is for creators who have nationality or residence in Spain, Portugal or any Ibero-American country. This category is worth 40,000 euros, which will be distributed among the selected proposals.
The award-winning projects will be shown at the VIDA gallery of the Fundación Telefónica website (http://www.fundacion.telefonica.com/) and they may be presented in subsequent exhibitions organized or supported by the foundation.
The projects presented will be assessed by an international jury consisting of José Carlos Mariátegui (Peru), Mónica Bello Bugallo (Spain), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada), Rodrigo Alonso (Argentina), Simon Penny ( U.S.A./Australia), Zhan Ga (China) and Francisco Serrano (Director of Fundación Telefónica).
One of the new features of this year's awards is the incorporation of Monica Bello Bugallo as Artistic Director of the International VIDA Programme to substitute for Daniel Canogar. A holder of a degree in History of Art and Cultural Research, since 2008 she has been in charge of educational programmes at LABoral Centro de Arte in Gijón. Her main area of interest is the crossroads between art, science and technology, and she has been especially devoted to art and biology.
