Terra Firma will focus on interpretations of a theme not yet thoroughly explored by Manifest. Landscape can be so very widely interpreted and expressed. From the most observational depictions of geographic locations to conceptual or nearly abstract spaces, landscapes are generally considered works representing real or imagined ‘land’ or natural spaces. However, even larger scale architectural conceptions, or combinations of the natural and man-made are often categorized as such. Therefore, Manifest invites artists to submit contemporary works in any medium that explores the concept or subject of Landscape.

CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING
An international call for works of contemporary printmaking

Like photography, printmaking is a genre of creative work that is underscored by its processes. Some artists are steadfast traditionalists, anchoring themselves in age-old technical methods. Others push the boundaries of the discipline, exploring just what constitutes ‘printmaking’. In this exhibit Manifest will call to artists to submit works of contemporary printmaking, and will strive to explore the range of methods and results currently being achieved within the bounds of such processes, including traditional and non-traditional approaches.

The International Drawing Annual is an extension of Manifest's Drawing Center activities. Its goal is to support the recognition, documentation, and publication of excellent, current, and relevant works of drawing from around the world. A natural question will be "what is drawing?" and that is exactly the question the Annual is meant to investigate from year to year. Furthermore the goal is to ask "what is exceptional drawing?" Therefore submissions are expected to vary, including a range of drawing types, from the most academic to the most experimental, but all with some relevance to the artists' honest understanding of the practice of "drawing."

With the inclusion of a call for writing about drawing Manifest eagerly pursues a deeper understanding of how drawing is realized, discussed, and interpreted in contemporary society. Works of writing will be selected to complement the artwork chosen for inclusion in the publication.

MOVING INTERACTIVE ART- Sanlun Yishu, Beijing, China

Artists are asked to submit their work to Sanlun Yishu in the spirit of collaboration. No work will be bought or sold while in the mobile gallery. It is a purely non-profit, public and global art project to promote contemporary art-awareness.

Works selected for exhibition will be reproduced in editions specified by the artist in dimensions appropriate to the vehicle. These reproductions will be taken by the passenger/participants in Beijing, who will in turn leave a creative response or a piece of ephemera in exchange for the work. These responses will then be forwarded electronically to the artist, who may choose to continue collaboration with this feedback.

Selected results of these dialogues will be published in a catalogue and exhibited in a Beijing gallery at the end of the project. When the exhibition is completed all work-specific feedback will be mailed to the artists for their keeping.

All participants will be invited to show their original work or works pertaining to the project at a gallery in Beijing at the end of the project. Details will be provided as they become available
FIRST-RUN DEADLINE: 29 October 2008

Submitted works should touch on the theme of the “urban experience”. This theme is open to the interpretation of the artist, but works should be aimed at drawing a connection to life in the city.

Two-dimensional, sound and video art is ideally suited to the project, but three-dimensional artists are encouraged to submit documentation of their work for display or
make a proposal for incorporating your work in the project.

There is no entry fee. Initial submissions should be sent by e-mail, with appropriately sized images or video and sound clips (10 Mb per e-mail). Accepted artists will be notified and given a mailing address or FTP address to upload full-resolution work.

Sanlun Yishu is an artist-run, collaborative project based in Beijing, China. We are assembling a collection of artwork from all over the world to be exhibited in and distributed by a mobile gallery, Sanlun Yishu, in various parts of Beijing.

Our mission is to provide contemporary artists a venue outside the traditional gallery to exhibit their work while giving people who likely have little or no exposure to art with an unobtrusive, positive and interactive art experience.

A 10,000 euros grant awarded to a young artist for studies abroad

The Jean-Claude Reynal Foundation, the auspices of the Foundation of France, in collaboration with the Fine Arts School of Bordeaux, offers an annual grant of 10,000 euros to enable a young artist, who works directly on paper, to travel to a country of his/her choice for a period of six months maximum.

Conditions

Candidates must be between 20 and 30 years of age and have had an artistic practice on paper for at least two years. All artists are eligible regardless of educational background or nationality.

50% of the scholarship money will be paid before departure and 50% at the time and place of residency.

The prize winner authorizes the Reynal Foundation to use a work of his/her choice on the media announcing the following year's scholarship competition. The chosen work will be approved by the executive committee.

"In Process"  is a Winter Studio Program that takes place in the Carriage House at the Islip Art Museum.  The galleries are transformed into working space during the winter months.
3 artists will be selected who wish to use the space as a studio from February though April, 2009 (3 months).  Each artist will be given a large, private working area with 24-hour access to the building.  Please, visit this link for a detailed floor plan: http://islipartmuseum.org/floor.plan.html

The Museum wants to give artists an opportunity to work on demanding projects that would normally be difficult to do without the space offered by the Carriage House.  Be sure to write a one-page proposal (max.) describing your project and why the space offered would be beneficial to the progress or completion of such a project.  During their residency, artists may use the space however they see fit, to begin work, complete work, and display it to the public, collectors, or dealers.  There will also be a weekend Open-Studio at the end of the program to showcase your accomplishments.  The Museum will cater and promote the event that will also include a small catalog.
Each artist will be given a stipend of $1500 for the residency.

ARTEINGENUA S.p.A. provides a challenge once again to young artists all around the world with an invitation to participate in the second ARTEINGENUA Prize 2008.  In doing so, they keep their place as an innovative cultural organisation. They work in a dynamic way with young artists in an environment, such as the Italian scene, which is often far removed from the more vibrant international art scenes. 

ARTEINGENUA offers this challenge with a grand prize totaling Euro 40,000.00; a prize unparalleled even in the international arena.

This is an important economic achievement which will give the winning artists an opportunity to invest in their own work by purchasing the materials they need for their art, plan trips and have experiences that will help them develop their creativity.  

The Second ARTEINGENUA Prize will give the three winning artists the opportunity for a year long working partnership with ARTEINGENUA without making any exclusive commitment.  This partnership will allow three artists (or groups of artists) to work on artistic projects and cultural events which will be decided on and organised together with ARTEINGENUA’s Artistic Management.  Although organising art competitions is nothing new, ARTEINGENUA has always believed that it is important to organise competitions that will become part of a much bigger picture.  ARTEINGENUA dedicates itself full-time to its artists, aiming to define future projects and establish ongoing partnerships with them (something quite rare in the art industry) and assist them to find successful long-term strategies and clear objectives.

Play it this very minute, while the possibilities are infinite, the language and material of art blend into a magma which is fascinating and complex and where it is more and more difficult to find certain answers.  Play the game; accept the challenge of a present that is often only understandable through virtual eyes.  It may be the only alternative for the artists/actors/players of the present.

Frith Street Gallery seeks an experienced Gallery Operations Manager to coordinate all aspects of exhibition and art fair installation, manage storage, and prepare artwork for transport. This position is also responsible for gallery and building maintenance.

Responsibilities
• Manage installations for at least six gallery exhibitions and three international art fairs per year plus two viewing rooms and temporary off-site locations
• Hire and supervise outside technicians for gallery exhibitions and art fairs
• Organise and maintain on-site stock room and prepare condition reports
• Construct suitable packaging for air/sea/road shipping and gallery storage
• Work with computerized inventory
• Document, label and catalogue artworks
• Ensure high standards of gallery and building maintenance
• Coordinate and manage service contracts including, security, air conditioning/heating, etc.

Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years senior museum or gallery technical and facility management experience in a supervisory role. Must have strong fabrication skills and experience installing audio and visual equipment and large scale, demanding exhibitions. This person must be able to work to tight deadlines and be able to interact effectively with all departments of the gallery. Attention to detail and care when handling artwork is essential. Must have good problem solving skills and a be able to contribute to installation planning with creative ideas.

Must have good IT skills and be familiar with a professional art database system (ArtForm preferably). Experience in the management of external contractors and building maintenance preferred. Familiarity with 16mm film desirable.

The Festival is held in Volgograd (former Stalingrad) every year in autumn during five years. It is one of advanced and acknowledged international projects realized in the sphere of actual arts in Russia. The festival Videologia is developing and aspiring to become the straightforward forum of the actual trends of contemporary arts process.
The subject of the V International festival of audio-visual arts Videologia is S-PORT/ The last Escape.

Regulations of the V International Festival of Audio-visual arts VIDOLOGIA 2008

Participation in the festival is free of charge.

DVD and Mini DV formats are acceptable for selection program.  

Only works produced not earlier than January 1st 2006 are applicable.  

Duration of works should not exceed 30 minutes (exceptions may apply).

The panel of coordinators of the festival will assemble the selection program that will be evaluated by jury and audience of VIDEOLOGIA 2008.

The entry form should accompany the work sent to the festival (emails with attached files with entry forms are acceptable).

2009 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE WORKSPACE GRANT FOR NEW YORK EMERGING ARTISTS, The Center for Book Arts, NY

The Center for Book Arts is pleased to continue the Artist-in-Residence Workspace Grant for New York Emerging Artists program in 2009. Up to five New York-based emerging artists will be offered space, time and support to explore the production of artist’s books and related work for a full year. The purpose of this program is to promote experimentation in book arts, thus artists from all disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The Center especially encourages applications from artists of culturally diverse backgrounds.

The award includes a $1,500-$2,000 cash stipend (depending on funding) plus a materials budget between $750 to $1,000 (depending on funding), 24 hour access to the Center’s printing and binding facilities for a full year, plus an individual studio space for 3 months. Artists also receive approximately $3,000-$5,000 tuition waiver for courses throughout the year, planned in conjunction with the staff. Experienced printers and bookbinders will be available to advise the artists on issues of materials and techniques as they arise. We have learned through past residents that ten hours per week of studio work is common in order to realize their artistic goals.

An exhibition of the artist’s work produced at the Center during their residency will be presented as part of our Featured Artist Series exhibition series in the following year. Other possible opportunities to present work to the public include a lecture/performance at the Center.

Workspace
The Center for Book Arts was founded in 1974 to develop and promote traditional bookmaking crafts and contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object. This grant will provide, at no cost to the artists, 24-hour access to a partitioned individual workspace (with a work table, storage space and a locker) and use of the Center’s equipment and facilities. These include a complete letterpress printshop with four Vandercook proof presses, a treadle press, a 19th century Washington hand press and several platen presses, a composing room with many cabinets of foundry type, a Charles Brand etching press, a 36” guillotine paper cutter, and all accessory equipment. The two binderies include nipping presses, standing presses, two board shears, a 3-ton Kensol hot stamping press, a Kwikprint hot stamping press, lying presses, backing presses, and many hand tools. The Center’s slide registry and other reference materials are also available.

Requirements
Applications will not be accepted from students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs during the program year (January– December 2009). Applicants must live/work in New York State and must reside in the greater NYC metropolitan area at the time of application and during the residency. Artists are encouraged to visit the Center for Book Arts prior to applying to this program. Artists do not need an appointment to visit. The Center is open to the public M – F 10 am – 6pm and Saturdays 10am –4pm. Artists are invited to submit applications postmarked by October 15, 2008 for the 2009 program. There is no application fee.

To Apply:
1. Current resume (two pages maximum).

2. An artist’s statement (maximum 250 words). Write about your vision and goals as an artist, what attracts you this particular residency program, and how the residency will benefit your work. NOTE: Please do not submit a specific project proposal.
* Experience in making books is not a prerequisite. The objective of this program is to introduce bookmaking techniques to artists and to provide supported time for experimentation.

3. Ten images of your work (in any medium).

If submitting digital images, they should be 1240 x 1240 max. pixels, jpg format, and saved onto the root directory of a PC-formatted CD, not into folders. Name files—they will appear in alpha order. DVDs/Videos/Audio works are also accepted, not more than 5 minutes long, with a one-paragraph description of the work. Please cue your tape to the 5-minute segment that you would like the selection panel to watch. If submitting slides, please label slides with numbers 1 – 10, your name, title, date, and TOP, and submit in a slide sheet.

NOTE: Promotional materials such as catalogs or postcards, and other supplemental materials will not be accepted. The Center for Book Arts is not responsible for such materials. They will be discarded.

4. A descriptive sheet (identification list) that corresponds with numbered slides, CD-ROM alpha ordered images, or DVD/Video/Audio work. List the title, date, dimensions, and medium of the piece shown.

5. A self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for return of slides/video. Application materials without a SASE that are not picked up at the Center by January 1, 2009 will be discarded.
