The piece is inspired by the epic protests at the 1968 Miss America contest which brought international attention to the “Women’s Liberation Movement”. Comparing the pageant to a meat market, the organisers did a self-critique of their action and declared it could have been more pro-women: “We’re not anti-beauty, just anti beauty contest.” We take this a step further. We are not anti-body, just against the idea of our bodies being on display for the male gaze. Our performance will reclaim the power of our bodies for ourselves.
