10 day Italian summer program: June 27th to July 7th 2015
International Centre for the Arts at Monte Castello di Vibio
Organised by artist Juliette McCullough
Interested art students are invited to participate in the cultural experience of a lifetime by joining an exclusive Italian summer program through the International Centre for the Arts at Monte Castello di Vibio. British artist Juliette McCullough offers a ten day Atelier class with the theme: ‘Figure in the Landscape,’ or, ‘21st century figure within a Medieval Landscape; modern and ancient life seen and studied in relationship. The class will run from June 27th to July 7th 2015
This class offers the opportunity to bring together the surrounding landscape and physical environment of a medieval Italian town with a study of the human figure. After a day of preliminary figure studies in studio we will take our clothed model out of the confinements of the Life Class and into the marvelous settings offered by the intimate spaces of the medieval town of Monte Castello, and, seen against the backdrop of the expansive spaces of the great vistas of the Umbrian landscape.
The aim is to discover the juxtapositioning of the dynamics of a human presence against the spirit of an ancient and enduring Italian landscape. The only walls of our studio class room will be the deeply textured old stone walls of the town, magically weathered, worn and burnished by the touch of humanity, history and the elements for the last nine hundred years.
Open to students of all levels this course will comprise lecture, demonstration, practice and critique, group and individual.
Within the International Center for the Arts the new International Studio School is the heart of the program. The Studio School offers multi-level classes in the visual arts as well as opportunities for uninterrupted studio time and a visiting artist/critics series. Through the Art Centre’s diverse, but integrated program they celebrate the connection between the art of Italy and the rhythms of daily life, believing that the food, wine, and folk traditions of Italy are inseparable from the full experience of its music, literature and paintings. This program creates a truly Socratic environment in which one engages in stimulating conversations and interactions with artists, scholars as well as professionals from every corner of this lovely village including the townspeople. Monte Castello is a perfect example of “civilita” – (civilized life). Perched on its little mountaintop, Monte Castello is home to about 300 residents, most of whom are descended from generations of Montecastelesi. These local people are directly involved in the day-to-day functioning of the school. Overlooking the lush Tiber valley, the village looks much as it did 500 years ago.
The program cost includes full board and tuition and airport transfer. Three traditional Umbrian meals are prepared each day by our cook Illia from fresh, locally grown ingredients. Two day long trips will be scheduled to cities such as Rome, Florence, Assisi, Sienna etc. Program cost: $3000.00
