Untitled, Backlit film 16 x 24 inches, 2005
My work needs light to be viewed. Light illuminates the film on which the images are printed and spills through tiny holes I pierce in the film to create patterns in the image. In some works the light shining through the holes creates a porous, glimmering border; in other pieces the lit holes emphasize the body’s permeable qualities by evoking pores, punctures and wounds. These formal effects combine with light’s symbolic properties to reveal a body that is both ethereal and solid and as such provides clues to the nature of material and immaterial reality. Rather than seek definitive answers to the questions I have posed, I am compelled by the sense of mystery surrounding them. In this puzzling realm between reason and intuition, between what can be proven and the unknown I present a body that resonates with possibilities. These possibilities encourage further reflection, suggest additional questions and most importantly allow mystery to flourish.
