Sex & Nature Works from 1969 to 1971 and The Artist Papers
From 1969 to 1971 Kuni Sugiura produced a group of monumentally-scaled black and white photographs printed on canvases that measured 5 x 7 feet. These works some depicting sexual acts in explicit detail and others featuring all over textural patterns from nature, were radical not only for their size and subject but also because they were created by a young Japanese woman, newly arrived in the United States.
This is the first presentation of Sugiuras works on canvas since the 1972 Annual Exhibition of Painting at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the first time that the erotic images will be displayed.
The exhibition will also include The Artist Papers edition, sixteen prints produced in connection with the appearance of Sugiuras first monograph, Artists and Scientists, published by Nazraeli Press with an introduction by Vicki Goldberg. The book surveys the artists most recent series of unique life-size portraits, which were made using the photogram process. The edition reproduces selected images from the series, reenacting performance works, characteristic gestures and significant actions by a diverse group of artists, including Takashi Murakami, Jasper Johns, Carolee Schneemann, Yayoi Kusama, and others.
