In his newest works, Dean Byington presents vast urban landscapes shaped by imagined history. Contemplating the defining global issues of our time, he invents new cities in which culture and nature collide outside of time.

Our fourth one-person presentation of works by the artist, includes eight oil paintings made since 2013. It coincides with the publication of a book entitled Dean Byington, offering a unique view of his history, source materials, and working methods with an original short story and poem by the acclaimed author and essayist Rick Moody. Published by Gallery 16, San Francisco (155 pages, 90 pages in color).

Dean Byington was born in 1958 in Santa Monica, California and grew up in the greater Los Angeles area. After studying physics and architecture at the University of California, Santa Cruz, he completed his B.A. in Art in 1987 at the University of California, Berkeley also receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree there in Painting in 1988. His first solo exhibition took place at Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco in 1994. Since then, works by Dean Byington have been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States, most recently in a one-person exhibition at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington, DC and currently in Fusion: Art of the 21st Century, a group show at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Works by the artist are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and those of many other distinguished institutions and private individuals.
