Jo�o Maria Gusm�o and Pedro Paiva represent Portugal in the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.
The 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, takes place from the 7th of June to the 22nd of November 2009. This year's edition of the most significant contemporary art exhibition in the world is organized by the international curator Daniel Birnbaum (Stockholm, 1963), and Making Worlds is the general subject.
Jo�o Maria Gusm�o and Pedro Paiva are the artist duo that represents Portugal in the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. This Portuguese official representation is curated by Natxo Checa and organized and produced by the Direc��o-Geral das Artes of the Minist�rio da Cultura.
Since the beginning of this decade and in an enduring search for an affirmation of the possibilities of "truth", Jo�o Maria Gusm�o and Pedro Paiva have shown a structured group of essays in different exhibition platforms and in diversified formats, such as experimental cinema and installation. In this, unorthodox or academic research, the artists built paths for what the human experience in the world shows as diverse and inexplicable.
Jo�o Maria Gusm�o (Lisboa, 1979) and Pedro Paiva (Lisboa 1977) are artists of a new generation with a recent and unusually solid career. In the last decade this duo's participation in international exhibitions such as the Bienal de S�o Paulo, the Bienal de Mercosur, Manifesta, Wattis Institut, Photoespa�a, Kunstverein Hannover, and Ikon Gallery, has contributed for the consolidation of their work.
At the 2009 Venice Biennale, and under the direction of the curator Daniel Birnbaum, the artist duo will present a multidisciplinary and complex new body of work as a prolongation of the themes already addressed (Meteor�tica and Abissologia).
