The paintings on this page mostly deal with interior spaces inhabited by light, which plays the role of a secondary architecture, sometimes invading the first, real architecture. The light creates projections and suggests spaces, dark shadows the inverse of its bright erasure. Backlighting, darkened foregrounds, the focussing of luminosity, and the intensity of colour in shadow are a medium of experience in these paintings. Light is occasionally distorted here through altered values, as in anomalies of flash photography, or through saturation or fading, as in the colours of sunset, daylight at dusk, or those which may arise through very long exposures by night. Visually, this may evoke an extended moment, or duration. Light may also recall the momentary, like a flashback. It can influence the way space is perceived, maybe making the familiar unfamiliar, or vice versa.
The subjects occasionally include figures, sometimes absorbed in activity, and sometimes turned away from the onlooker, to create a sequence of gazes; others confront the viewer�s gaze directly yet withhold a view of their own eyes.
