Of his approach, and his inspiration, the artist states: “On August 6th, 1945, at 8:15 AM, my grandfather, Takeshi Ito, witnessed a great tragedy that destroyed nearly everything in Hiroshima… I remember him saying that day in Hiroshima was like hundreds of suns lighting up the sky. This poetic yet overwhelming expression of the A-bomb explosion has fueled me to create my projects.” — MODELING NATURE Drawings by Mark Pomilio North Gallery Reading Mark Pomilio's proposal to Manifest, which described exposing “the mystical beauty, harmony and intrigue found within naturally occurring systems of growth,” one might have thought it was a statement by a landscape painter. The fact that the work is actually geometric abstraction blended with what could be architectural design surely ignited its appeal for selection. Eleven of Pomilio's drawings will occupy the North Gallery. Ranging from delicate and small study-like drawings, through medium and large-sized finished sculptural drawings, the works nod to the formulaic style of Sol Lewitt, but maintain a satisfyingly distinct identity for being exactly what they are meant to be. Of his work, the artist states: “My artistic interests are fueled by a desire to create artwork that mirrors naturally occurring systems in our world… I find inspiration on a myopic level by attempting to imitate cell repetition and cloning. Each image has evolved through the development of pictorial representations of geometric systems of growth. In many works, formal decisions are multiplied equally throughout the field, causing a type of visual unity. This balance and symmetry has a visual equivalency to how we read the meditative qualities of a reflective pool, or a religious icon. I force a harmony upon the image field that, in turn, forces a potential meaning through the integration of the image and title.” Artist Bio: Mark Pomilio’s current research has focused on creating images, which embody principles of geometry, fractals, cloning and single cell manipulation. These interests have led to invitations to lecture nationally, on topics as diverse as art and mathematics and the role the visual arts can play in understanding the social ramifications of advances in the Life Sciences. His artwork has been featured in solo museum and gallery exhibitions nationally and internationally, including Xu Beihong Art Academy, Renmin University of China in Beijing, the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salapetriere in Paris, and Art Resources Transfer in New York City. Originally from Philadelphia, Pomilio is currently living and working in Phoenix, Arizona, where he is an Associate Professor within the School of Art at Arizona State University's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
