ELSEWHERE ARTIST COLLABORATIVE 2009 residencies for artists, writers, musicians, curators and cultural producers

ELSEWHERE ARTIST COLLABORATIVE  2009 residencies for artists, writers, musicians, curators and cultural producers

Elsewhere, an arts production site and experimental museum in downtown Greensboro, NC, is seeking artists, curators, writers, musicians, and cultural producers for residencies during its Spring, Summer, and Fall 2009 seasons.

Set within a former thrift store housing a 58-year collection of American surplus, thrift, and antiques, Elsewhere invites experimental creators to utilize the immense collection of objects to pursue site-specific material, conceptual, and/or technologically-based projects.

Elsewhere's building-two storefronts on the ground floor, a 14-room boarding house on the second, and warehouse on the third-provides dynamic architectures for the creation and installation of works. Artists live and work within transforming installations; these interactive environments become platforms for re-conceptualizing the theory and practice of art-making as an ongoing process of exchange in community.

Within a store where nothing is for sale, Elsewhere offers an unparalleled framework for creative practices, processes and productions outside the traditional gallery, museum, and residency systems.

The complete call for artists, application deadlines are available at
http://www.elsewhereelsewhere.org/residencies.html.

Creators of all kinds and collaborative groups should email residencies@elsewhereelsewhere.org for
an application and brochure.  We review applications at the end of each month.

4th Annual INTERNATIONAL DRAWING ANNUAL, Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

4th Annual INTERNATIONAL DRAWING ANNUAL, Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, Cincinnati, Ohio
Deadline December 31st, 2008

A Competitive Annual Publication of Works of Contemporary Drawing
and Writing About Drawing

The International Drawing Annual is an extension of Manifest's Drawing Center activities. Its goal is to support the recognition, documentation, and publication of excellent, current, and relevant works of drawing from around the world. A natural question will be "what is drawing?" and that is exactly the question the Annual is meant to investigate from year to year. Furthermore the goal is to ask "what is exceptional drawing?" Therefore submissions are expected to vary, including a range of drawing types, from the most academic to the most experimental, but all with some relevance to the artists' honest understanding of the practice of "drawing."

With the inclusion of a call for writing about drawing Manifest eagerly pursues a deeper understanding of how drawing is realized, discussed, and interpreted in contemporary society. Works of writing will be selected to complement the artwork chosen for inclusion in the publication.

Artists' Proposals for 2010 Season - Eastern State Penitentiary Art Installation, Philadelphia, PA
Deadline : June 16, 2009, 5:00 pm

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site seeks proposals for its 2010 tour season and beyond.  There are two funding categories : Exhibition Approval providing a budget of up to $7,500 and approval to exhibit at the historic site; and Exhibition Development, providing up to $2,500 with no guarantee of exhibition.

Full details on the site's web site at
http://www.easternstate.org/exhibits/guidelines.php

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for it's grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America's most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone.  Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone's Cell, and Death Row. A critically-acclaimed series of artists installations is free with admission.

DOROTHEA LANGE-PAUL TAYLOR PRIZE

DOROTHEA LANGE-PAUL TAYLOR PRIZE
Deadline: January 31, 2009

Overview
The year 2009 marks the nineteenth anniversary of the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor documentary prize, a $20,000 award given annually by the Center for Documentary Studies. First announced a year after the Center's founding at Duke University, the prize was created to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. In 1941 Lange and Taylor published An American Exodus, a book that renders human experience eloquently in text and images and remains a seminal work in documentary studies. The Lange-Taylor Prize honors their important collaborative work.

The Lange-Taylor Prize is offered to a writer and a photographer in the early stages of a documentary project. By encouraging such collaborative efforts, the Center for Documentary Studies supports the documentary process in which writers and photographers work together to record the human story.

Guidelines

Description
The prize is intended to fund collaborative work by a writer and a photographer in the formative or fieldwork stages of a documentary project. Submissions on any subject are welcome. Winners of the Lange-Taylor competition will have their work featured in Document, a periodical published by the Center for Documentary Studies, as well as in a virtual gallery on the CDS Web site. The amount of the award is $20,000.

Eligibility
Collaboration is essential to the nature of the work this award supports; therefore, individual submissions will not be considered. More than two people may apply as long as one of the collaborators is a writer and one is a photographer working with black-and-white or color still photography. Individuals currently associated with the Center for Documentary Studies are not eligible for the prize.

Deadline
All required materials must be submitted under one cover during the month of January and postmarked no later than January 31, 2009.

Selection and Notification
Each year a judging panel, including a prominent photographer and an accomplished writer, as well as individuals with experience in a variety of documentary arts, arts management, and publishing, is selected by the director and staff. Winners will be chosen and notified by mid-summer 2009. Public announcement of the winners will be made by the end of the summer. Return of all submissions will be made after the final decision has been reached.

The award will be reported to the winners on a 1099-Miscellaneous tax form. It is the responsiblity of the winners to file their tax liability.

Because of the volume of applications it is not possible for us to be available by telephone for inquiries. Please note that application forms on-line must be printed and submitted. It is not possible to submit applications electronically. If you have questions about the grant or the Center for Documentary Studies, please write to us at:

24 studios available in a unique New Cross building, South London

24 studios available in a unique New Cross building, South London

temporarycontemporary presents a 1912 Police station with period features, inc studios with bay windows, parquet floors (interview room, sector office etc), all decent height. It’s a great building; there’s a large yard with lorry access for on-site parking, working outside, events, and a venue for hire, the Police Gym and Prison Cells, which can be used for exhibition, photo shoots, music and rehearsals.

We will make a hang-out snack lounge with wireless internet in the communal Police Booking Office area for studio members and in the future the gallery space could have some kind of curated programme - our approach to this monolithic Arts & Craft facility is that, in addition to just studios, there will be a constant activity creating the sense of a DIY Art Centre.

The building is very well located and is on the same street as New Cross Station, 5 mins walk to Deptford High Street and 15 to Goldsmiths. Studios will open mid Dec – Jan. Launch party in Jan, poss New Year’s Eve party... Applications invited now. Guide price is £12/sqft+utilities.
