Human behavior creates structure just as structure governs human behavior. Tricia McLaughlin works in the realm of fantasy or ridiculous architecture where people are made to live in arbitrary forms. She plays with the idea of structuring human behavior to fit these absurd situations to demonstrate human beings’ adherence to structure, both natural and invented. The designs and objects cater to only the necessary human functions (sleep, water intake and waste). The necessities for maintaining our human bodies rely on the intake and waste of water. Water is a natural element that we cannot live without yet too much could kill us. The nature and idea of water as both a vital element and a threat to our existence often influences her work.

Narratives develop from her designs for living. For example, The BENHUR UNIT is a rickshaw equipped with all the necessities for collecting and wasting water. The occupants of these units are storm chasers. They must follow the rain in order to fill their sinks, toilets, bathtub/waterbeds so that they can survive. As they chase the rain, their momentum rotates their planet. - Michael Wilson of Contemporary magazine described McLaughlin’s exhibition at *sixtyseven gallery as “architectural makebelieve in a suite of models, prototypes and digital animations that pitted utopian efficiency against nightmarish repetition.” The DAY/NIGHT UNIT’s design is a circle that mimics the passage of time, the repetition of day to night to day. The 3D animations can be seen as instructional videos on how to occupy her theoretical and often humorous designs for living and are exhibited with the human scale sculptures or architectural drawings and models.
