Procession, clay, gold leaf and mosaic

My work plays with language, in particular the point at which language breaks down, anarchy reigns and poetry begins.
This idea is drawn into my work using various materials, all of which are worked in a quick hands on way.
The forms/marks which have evolved from working with the materials in this intuitive way, at first glance, give the work a familiar appearance (possibly animal, human or letters).
But on closer inspection this familiarity is questioned and the forms and marks are less recognisable, less ordinary, less perfect.

With all the pieces the poetic quality of the materials used is shown; natural accidents such as drips, fingerprints and bubbles are all visible.
Like poetry the work attempts, visually, to express the rhythms and awkwardness of speech and to capture a moment of anarchy.

The random way in which the individual pieces have been made is given a visual sense of order by the way I compose them (on a plinth, the floor, shelves or within the paper/linen).
The potential chaos is contained, but the resolution that this appears to offer never happens, and the work always looks like it will eventually escape.
The large red drawings were made with wax pencil which cannot be easily erased: As nothing can be taken away, the images can only be built upon thereby creating a sense that the forms are growing in an unrestrained way.
