A personal farewell note: (zur deutschen Version bitte weiterblättern..) After nearly 20 years, as many of you know, I've made the decision to stop my gallery activities and pass the baton onto the next entrepreneurs in line. VOGES GALLERY as it is and was will be closed from December 1st, 2011. A gallery, in my understanding, works with a well calibrated team of artists; it promotes their work over years-often decades-and is instrumental in creating a market for the respective artworks. This, in turn, is the foundation for the artist to work successfully and professionally and also to enable them to produce further works. Continuity, passion, trust and affirmation are key to a prosperous development of both artist and gallery. Up to today, I believe that I can be happy and content overall at having reached a good level. The team was undoubtly successful; we executed projects for Documenta, almost all the Biennales, national and international museums, institutions, public collections and - most important of all - we were able to build a sound and supportive base of private collectors for the gallery artists. All these collectors who supported the gallery over the years, I'd like to thank whole-heartedly. Without them there would have been no progress. And of course I'd also like to thank my artists who did one thing for many years: they kept surprising me! Mostly in a good and breathtaking way. My deep thanks for that too. After all this time, the whole team of artists are well-involved with other galleries and through them they will continue to be promoted and the collector base be maintained. Any inquiries regarding these artists and their work I'll be happy to forward to the respective partners. My focus, meanwhile, will be set on the improvement of the situation of young and mid-career galleries, a condition which is very often easily overlooked. When we founded VOLTA in 2005 it was based on a similar analysis of what was actually needed in the Primary Art Market. If the gallery cannot fullfill its important role in the system, we have a disbalance in our sensitive art ecosystem. The new company that I've founded together with my partners Philipp von Ilberg, Karl Rheinberger and - of course - my lovely wife Amanda Coulson, will be known as FOUNDATIONtm and is going to implement a business model, which is common and well-established in other trades and will help galleries to improve their short-term liquidity. You will hear and learn more about it soon. But before I get ahead of myself, the next thing in line is the ultimate event at VOGES GALLERY where I will present artworks and treasures from the past 20 years, arranged salon style, and which will change over the course of the event, for three days and three nights. There will be many stories to tell, about pretty much every artwork on show, and many of them - although not all - will be - what a surprise - for sale!!! So be my guest and make yourself a farewell present. Looking forward seeing you next weekend. Uli Voges |
