Defenceless before the emptiness

Three different proposals are going to be presented, the first from 28 April to 11 May, the second from 12 to 20 May, and the third from the 21^st up to the end of the exhibition, on 31 May.

Emptiness, limits, interior look and pain transformed are the proposals being launched by Llamas in this, his latest one-man exhibition.
For the first time, Galería Pilar Serra offers an individual sample of the work of Ignacio Llamas, who, in the latest holding of ARCO, was recently awarded a prize by the Asociación Española de Críticos de Arte (AECA, the Spanish Association of Art Critics) as the best living Spanish artist at the fair.

Under the title Sin defensa ante el vacío (Defenceless before the emptiness), the exhibition displays the works to which the artist has devoted the last few years of his creative process. In this period, a large number of works in terms of volume and a wide-ranging photographic series have been shown. The latter forms the focus of this exhibition.

The sample is presented as a trip through time, in other words, a trip through three different contributions. The first part of that trip offers us photographic works belonging to the series Soledades (Solitudes). The second part shows a photographic installation where the space of the gallery itself takes on an enormous protagonism, in order to then go on in a third moment to propose various pieces from the series Incertidumbres (Uncertainties).

In both their volumetric and their photographic aspects, the works propose to silence the observer of their noises and commence a trip towards their own interior nature. To transform the outer look into a look directed towards the interior of oneself, towards the most profound part of one’s being. When making this trip the light emanating from each of us is perceived, along with the shadows and darkness that we all drag along with us. Llamas constructs his metaphors by proposing to us images of architectural or landscape spaces by means of which he alludes to the interior of the human being. As we enter into these images we discover places dominated by a transforming light, which are only altered by some everyday elements containing a powerful symbolic charge. In this way a silent and eloquent universe is generated.

In these latest works the artist abandons the elements that have accompanied him in earlier periods: suitcases, trees, stairs, half-open doors... in order to offer us desolate landscapes, interrupted solely by fences, barriers and wire that allow him to talk of the limits of the human being, an idea that focuses his latest proposals. Another element that insistently appears in this latest work is the abandoned chair, symbol of emptiness, solitude and silence. Limits, anxieties, pain and the possibility of conceiving them as elements which, once taken on, can construct us as people, become the core of the artist’s proposal. Solitude, interior look and pain transformed are proposals that are launched in order to undertake a path in search of knowledge.

Ignacio Llamas has a degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid. His work has been displayed in the Patio Herreriano, Museo DA2, MACA, MEIAC, Museo Unión Fenosa, Musei Civici di Cagliari and the Galata Museo di Genova, and he has taken part in numerous international fairs.
