Since it was founded in 1992 the Galerie Urs Meile has been internationally engaged in the presentation and dissemination of contemporary art in the media of painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance. The gallery operates out of two locations: Lucerne (Switzerland) and Beijing (China). While the operating centre is based in Switzerland, the Beijing branch – set in the middle of the artist and gallery quarter Caochangdi – has established itself as an international meeting place for collectors, curators and aficionados of the arts. The complex designed by Ai Weiwei contains four spacious exhibition rooms within six buildings, and houses the artist-in-residence programme initiated by the gallery.

As one of the first galleries worldwide to do so, since its first contact in the middle of the 1990s, the Galerie Urs Meile has also been intensively involved in the Chinese art scene, whose protagonists now participate in the discourse on contemporary visual art at the highest international level. In recent years, the gallery has enduringly fostered the careers of some of the most influential Chinese artists working today, among them Ai Weiwei, Qiu Shihua, Wang Xingwei and Xie Nanxing.
Within the framework of visits lasting several months, the artist-in-residence studio in Beijing offers Western artists the opportunity to work in China and forge contacts with the Chinese art scene. Within the context of this exchange programme internationally established as well as young artists present projects specifically developed for the gallery spaces in Beijing.
Seit ihrer Gründung 1992 engagiert sich die Galerie Urs Meile international in Präsentation und Vermittlung zeitgenössischer Kunst in den Medien Malerei, Skulptur, Fotographie, Installation und Performance. Die Galerie arbeitet von zwei Standorten: Luzern (Schweiz) und Peking (China). Während sich das operative Zentrum in der Schweiz befindet, hat sich die Pekinger Dependance – inmitten des Künstler- und Galerienviertels Caochangdi gelegen – zu einem internationalen Treffpunkt für Sammler, Kuratoren und Kunstinteressierte etabliert. Der von Ai Weiwei entworfene Gebäudekomplex beheimatet in sechs Häusern vier grosszügige Ausstellungsräume und das von der Galerie initiierte Artist-in-Residence-Programm.
Das künstlerische Programm beinhaltet etablierte wie aufstrebende junge Künstler aus China, Europa und den USA.
Seit dem ersten Kontakt Mitte der neunziger Jahre beschäftigt sich die Galerie Urs Meile auch, als eine der weltweit ersten Galerien, intensiv mit der chinesischen Kunstszene, deren Protagonisten sich heute auf höchstem internationalen Niveau am Diskurs in der zeitgenössischen bildenen Kunst beteiligen. In den vergangenen Jahren baute die Galerie die Karrieren einiger der einflussreichesten chinesischen Künstler nachhaltig auf, unter ihnen Ai Weiwei, Qiu Shihua, Wang Xingwei und Xie Nanxing.
Das Artist-in-Residence-Studio in Peking bietet westlichen Kunstschaffenden im Rahmen mehrmonatiger Aufenthalte die Möglichkeit in China zu arbeiten und sich mit der chinesischen Kunstszene zu vernetzen. Im Rahmen dieses Austauschprogramms präsentieren international arrivierte wie junge Kunstschaffende spezifisch für die Galerienräumlichkeiten in Peking entwickelte Projekte.
