ABOUT PEER
PEER consistently surprises by creating opportunities for artists to produce exceptional work in unexpected circumstances.
- Sir Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate
PEER was established in 1999 as an independent arts organisation to commission imaginative and ambitious arts projects by international and local artists in the heart of east London.
PEER’s distinctive programme combines gallery-based activities with projects in the public realm and educational and community activities and events. As an artist and-outreach-focussed organisation, it encourages risk-taking and innovation, presenting art in its dedicated gallery space on Hoxton Street and at various locations in the vicinity, including vacant buildings, the street, the canal towpath and public parks in Hackney.
PEER’s Mission is to:
- Deliver uncompromising, innovative, world-class art in the gallery and the public realm that is led by ideas and excellence rather than fashion and marketability.
- Offer creative opportunities and experiences to local people of all ages and from a range of economic, social and cultural backgrounds through our participation programme.
- Provide emerging, mid-career and established artists with opportunities to explore and to take new risks in their working practice.
- Make a positive impact on the local environment and its communities through the provision of the highest quality art.
Earlier this year we learned that our bid to Arts Council England's National Portfolio Funding Programme was successful and we are to become one of only 110 newly funded organisations out of nearly 550 that applied. This is fantastic news for PEER, and a ringing endorsement of the strength and value of our work. Pending the agreed contract with the Arts Council, the three-year grant will start in April 2012 and will provide support towards, but not cover, our core costs. PEER continues to rely on the support of its patrons, friends and benefactors and there are many opportunities to become involved in supporting our activities, such as joining our Friends scheme, purchasing an edition or donating through JustTextGiving.
