WHAT'S NEW IS NEW AGAIN
Dan Flavin Louise Lawler Sherrie Levine

April 9 - July 11, 2015

Marc Jancou Contemporary is pleased to announce What’s New is New Again a three person show featuring a fluorescent sculpture by Dan Flavin; three photographs by Louise Lawler and a series of paintings by Sherrie Levine. The show underscores the ways in which art accumulates different meanings over time and in different context. Each artist in their own visual language suggests that how we see and understand art and beyond is conditioned by our own experiences, collective and singular, shared and private.

Louise Lawler (b. 1947) creates photographic works that include images of artwork by other artists as displayed in gallery exhibitions or collector’s homes. By depicting other artist’s works of art as her subject, Lawler challenges our definitions of authorship while simultaneously raising questions about the place, value, meaning and use of art. Lawler has exhibited within the United States and throughout Europe. Important exhibitions include shows at: Dia Beacon, NY; Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Kunstmuseum Basel, CH; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; National Museum of Art, Oslo; Musée d’Art Moderne de Ville de Paris; and participation in two Whitney Biennials, NY.

Since the late 1970s, Sherrie Levine (b. 1947) has employed repetition, duplication, and seriality to explore notions of originality and authorship in art.  She has consistently eschewed the modernist prioritization of authenticity and artistic genius in favor of reference and appropriation. Levine’s work has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including the Hirshhorn Museum,D.C.; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; San Francisco Museum of  Modern Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Portikus, Frankfurt; Kunstmuseen Krefeld, Germany; Whitney Museum, NY and Portland Art Museum, OR.

For more than three decades Dan Flavin (1933-1996) pursued the artistic possibilities of readymade fluorescent light to become an icon of Minimalist art. Flavin’s work has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. Notables include the Guggenheim Museum, NY; National Gallery of Canada, Ottowa; St. Louis Art Museum, MO; Kunsthalle Basel, CH; Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; Guggenheim, Berlin, GE; and Dia Foundation for the Arts, NY.

What’s New is New Again will be on view April 9th through July 11th, 2015. Marc Jancou Contemporary is located at 24 West 57th Street, New York, NY. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. After July 4th our hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.
