« Almost Animated » est une réflexion sur l'évolution et le rôle de la photographie dans les années 1970 et 1980. Après les avant-gardes, la photographie elle-même a été remise en cause. Sa relation au réel - sa prétendue objectivité - a été décortiquée par des artistes qui en pressentaient la nature profondément ambivalente. Au mitan de cette époque, la parution de "La Chambre claire", de Roland Barthes, résonna comme un coup de tonnerre, « Car l'immobilité de la photo est comme le résultat d'une confusion perverse entre deux concepts : le Réel et le Vivant : en attestant que l'objet a été réel, elle induit subrepticement à croire qu'il est vivant, à cause de ce leurre qui nous fait attribuer au Réel une valeur absolument supérieure, comme éternelle ; mais en déportant ce réel vers le passé (« ça a été »), elle suggère qu'il est déjà mort. Aussi vaut-il mieux dire que le trait inimitable de la Photographie (son noème), c'est que quelqu'un a vu le référent (même s'il s'agit d'objets) 'en chair et en os', ou encore 'en personne' ». "Almost Animated" is a reflection on the evolution and role of photography in the 1970s and 80s. After the avant-gardes, photography itself was called into question: its relation to the real - its purported objectivity - was deconstructed by artists conscious of its deep ambiguity. Published by Roland Barthes in the middle of this period, "La Chambre Claire (Camera Lucida)" was like a thunderbolt. "For the photograph's immobility is somehow the result of a perverse confusion between two concepts: the Real and the Live: by attesting that the object has been real, the photograph surreptitiously induces belief that it is alive, because of that delusion which makes us attribute to Reality an absolutely superior, somehow eternal value; but by shifting this reality to the past ('this has been'), the photograph suggest that it is already dead. Hence it would be better to say that Photography's inimitable features (its 'noeme') is that someone has seen the referent (even if it is a matter of objects) 'in flesh and blood', or again 'in person'."
