Autobiographical notes and the archaeology of everyday life deliver the basic structure for each of Gabriela Jolowicz's woodcuts. The tranquillity of the settings is disrupted by scattered picture references, the singularity of compositions and an abundance of detail. The pictures often resemble Frankenstein’s Monster as they are sewn together out of heterogenic materials. This impression is heightened by the various styles and patterns used to describe the pictorial elements. Still, the artist tries to keep the illusion alive that the depicted scenes and scenery actually exist.

As much as the motifs tell about the “Now” (of the artist), the woodcut is a visual medium of the past. Its original function as a carrier of information – rather than a form of art – plays into the perception of the onlooker.

Gabriela Jolowicz, born in Salzgitter, Germany, in 1978, lives and works in Berlin. She studied illustration at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig with Prof. Volker Pfüller and Prof. Thomas Müller (2002-2007) and completed her post-graduate studies with Prof. Thomas Müller in 2010.
Her works are included in the collections of the Deutsche Bundesbank, Frankfurt/Main, the Städtisches Kunstmuseum Spendhaus Reutlingen, and the Stiftung Kunst, Kultur und Bildung der Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg.
