THE LIFE OF OBJECTS November 11 – December 17, 2011

Vogt Gallery is pleased to present “The Life of Objects,” featuring work by Mauricio Alejo, Johanna Unzueta, Pablo Guardiola, Mario de Vega, Juan Pablo Villegas, and Oscar Santillán.

The show is curated by María del Carmen Carrión. “The Life of Objects” brings together six Latin American artists whose work ranges from sculpture to sound, photography, and conceptual art. The curated group show presents artworks that tell a story through objects that are imbued with an autobiographical illusion and seem to possess an animist quality.

Mauricio Alejo works in various media and often transforms common objects into uncanny installations. Alejo was born in Mexico City and has been exhibited at the CCAC Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco. His most recent solo show took place at Ramis Barquet, New York, in 2009.

Johanna Unzueta presents a site-specific sculpture. Her work re-inflects industrially produced commodities as one-of-a-kind crafted objects. In many senses a classical sculptor, she also produces installations and drawings. Born in Santiago de Chile, Unzueta has recently been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, New York.

Pablo Guardiola is a conceptual artist born in Puerto Rico. Guardiola’s photographs evoke the bodily resonances of their subjects though a visible absence. Guardiola lives in San Francisco. His most recent solo show was reviewed in Artforum.

Mario de Vega is a sound and visual artist, for this exhibition he presents a limited edition record inscribed both with sound and image. De Vega has performed internationally in festivals and exhibited in museums and galleries. This show marks his New York exhibition debut. Juan Pablo Villegas also works largely in sound. His piece for the show is a video in which an invisible force breathes life into inanimate material. Villegas was born in Mexico and lives in Mexico City. This show marks his US debut.

Oscar Santillán works among a variety of media. He contributes a photograph that shows a displaced object functioning absurdly and evocatively. Santillan was born in Ecuador and lives in Philadelphia, PA. Vogt Gallery is committed to bringing attention to the complex artistic and cultural ties that bind New York to both Europe and Latin America.

This is the fifth exhibition in Vogt Gallery’s initial series of shows aiming to put an emphasis on curatorial practice to further artistic discussion. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 11 am-6 pm and by appointmentFor further details including images please contact Fabian Bernal at 212.255.2671 or at [email protected]
