From Scratch
2 - 17 July 2009

A series of events exploring the legacy of experimental British composer Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra (1967-71).

This series anticipates The Drawing Room�s winter programme of events which will include an exhibition of �Treatise� (1963-7), Cardew�s impressive 193-page graphic score, original manuscripts, Scratch Books and other archival material brought together for the first time in the UK; film screenings and symposia.

Events are free but booking is essential.

Thursday 2 July 11.00 � 18.30: From Scratch: A Forum
This Forum brings together individuals who were involved with the Scratch Orchestra (1967-71) and practitioners and theorists who have engaged with collaborative, participatory and improvisatory practices across art forms since this time. Participants include Horace Cardew, Walter Cardew, Carole Finer, Kaffe Matthews, Hayley Newman, Eddie Pr�vost, Andrea Phillips, Frances Rifkin, Adrian Rifkin, Laurie Scott-Baker, Brigid Scott-Baker, John Tilbury and others.

Thursday 2 July 16.00- 17:00: A canal boat duo scratch style. Performed by pupils from the Bridge Academy with Kaffe Matthews and Shane Waltener.
Regents Canal between Acton Lock (Broadway Market) and Kingsland Basin.
This performance is the outcome of a collaboration between the Bridge Academy, Hackney and The Drawing Room. Artists Kaffe Matthews and Shane Waltener led students through visual and sound workshops to explore the activities and methodology of Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra.

Monday 6 & Tuesday 7 July 10.00 � 16.30: Jude Walton: �Dancing the Book�
A two-day workshop led by Jude Walton which explores the relationship between gesture, mark and movement and the documents and records that result. Jude Walton is a Melbourne-based interdisciplinary artist.

Saturday 11 July 14.00 � 20.00: Performance of Cornelius Cardew�s �Treatise�
Composer and musician John Lely collaborates with contemporary musicians Angharad Davies, Rhodri Davies, Tim Parkinson, Lee Patterson and James Saunders. The audience are invited to drop in and stay as long as they wish.

Friday 17 July 18.30 � 20.30: Entropy Flux
Live visual and audio performance directed by Adam Melvin of DEME
DEME will create a live visual and audio performance in response to Cardew�s �Draft Constitution for the Scratch Orchestra�.

From Scratch is conceived in collaboration with ICFAR (International Centre for Fine Art Research), University of the Arts, London.
