SAVE THE DATE 20 MAY 2009 18.30 20.30 DRAWING 2009 FUNDRAISER AUCTION An opportunity to bid for unique drawings donated by over 200 significant artists Exhibition opens 30 April and closes with the auction on 20 May 2009 Bids start at 200 and can be taken by visiting the exhibition, our on-line auction, by phone or at the auction event. Work will be featured on our website from 30 April 2009 http://www.drawingroom.org.uk/events_fundraisers.htm For further information on the event please contact Mary Doyle or Kate Macfarlane on 0207729 5333 [email protected] Jake and Dinos Chapman, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Peter Blake, Michael Landy, Paul Noble, Cornelia Parker and Gavin Turk are among 230 acclaimed artists, including many Turner Prize nominees and winners, to make new work for the exhibition and auction, Drawing 2009, which celebrates contemporary drawing at THE DRAWING ROOM from 30 April. Drawing has experienced a renaissance in recent years and this exhibition proudly celebrates the extraordinary richness of drawing today. As Cornelia Parker says Everything I do is informed by drawing, it is fundamental to my practice. It is manifest in my installations as a kind of exploding, an unraveling and conversely it can be a quiet act of inhalation.' Drawing 2009 is the fourth biennial fundraising exhibition for THE DRAWING ROOM, a public gallery devoted to the exploration of contemporary drawing. It culminates in a silent auction on the evening of 20 May, which will be opened by the artist Cornelia Parker, and it has become one of London art worlds key biennial events. For some artists, like Paul Noble, drawing is a principle activity while for others, like Jake & Dinos Chapman, it forms part of a multi-disciplined practice. Other artists who have donated rarely draw but enjoy the challenge this fundraiser creates and for some the invitation often signals a new phase or exciting departure in their work. AK Dolven, known mainly for her films, says The Drawing Rooms biennial fundraiser always stimulates me to make new work. The exhibition includes a range of materials and stylistic approaches, from the cartoon-like skull on legs by the Chapmans, the jewel-like enamel work of Raqib Shaw to the pen and smoke drawing by Douglas Gordon. With bids starting at 200, Drawing 2009 provides a rare opportunity to buy unique drawings by major and emerging artists at accessible prices. The work highlights the significance of drawing today with over 200 established artists, from the UK and abroad, donating a drawing made especially for the auction. Anyone can bid at www.drawingroom.org.uk, by phone or at the gallery from 30 April. Artists include Hurvin Anderson, Gordon Cheung, Tacita Dean, Douglas Gordon, Mona Hatoum, Rachel Howard, Gary Hume, Peter Jones, Peter Liversidge, Christopher Orr, Eva Rothschild, Thomas Scheibitz, Raqib Shaw, Bob & Roberta Smith, Mark Titchner, Julie Verhoeven, Roy Voss, Martin Westwood, Alison Wilding, Cerith Wyn Evans and many more. Douglas Gordon says I always thought of drawing like some kind of 'mental arithmetic' like the mental exercises you did at school every day but you know now why they were worth doing. So for me, the motto should be: A drawing a day, keeps the doctor away.
