DRAWING ROOM BURSARY AWARD Tom Varley 9 January– 9 February 2012 The artist Tom Varley has been selected as the recipient of the Drawing Room’s first Bursary Award. The Bursary Award reflects Drawing Room’s commitment to supporting the production of new work and the development of artists’ practice at different stages in their career. Varley has chosen to use the gallery as a studio and will be resident at the Drawing Room for one month in January - February 2012. Rather than aiming to produce a finished and substantive body of work suitable for public exhibition, the artist intends to set himself daily tasks which will encourage risk-taking and experimentation. Creating a blog and video feed as a tool for the development of his own practice, he will make his artistic processes accessible to a wide audience, alongside conducting workshops and initiating discourse with fellow practitioners. Public events include open studio sessions and a talk by the artist. Varley is based in Glasgow and his work comprises video, text, drawing and objects. He was recently involved in Group Affinity, at Kunstverein Munich, 2011 and is interested to continue his exploration of collaborative methods of working whilst at the Drawing Room. This residency offers Varley a means to focus on his own practice at a transitional stage in his career development and over a consolidated period of time. The Bursary Award Residency, which will take place every two years, is supported by CASS Art and Drawing Room’s Biennial Fundraiser. The Drawing Room invited curators, artists and critics, throughout the UK, to nominate an emergent artist who uses drawing in innovative and substantial ways in their practice. Sarah Lowndes, a writer and lecturer based in Glasgow, nominated Tom Varley. Artists nominated for the Bursary Award were given the opportunity to develop a proposal to suit their personal artistic careers. Varley was selected by a panel including Karsten Schubert (gallerist and Drawing Room Advisory Board member), Paul Noble (artist) and Drawing Room Directors, Mary Doyle, Kate Macfarlane and Katharine Stout. Tom Varley was born 1985, in Keighley and lives and works in Glasgow. Recent exhibitions in 2010 include: Bad Igloo Lust, The Royal Standard, Liverpool; Guestroom (W/ Neil Clements + Dan Miller), Galerie Mark Müller, Zürich; Three Person Exhibition (with Merlin James +Andrew Taylor) Southside Gallery, Glasgow and New Work, Intermedia, Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow , 2009.
