In The Zone Curated by David Gibson May 22 - June 23, 2013 Opening Reception May 22, 6-9 pm Artists:Jenny Carpenter, Carrie Elston Tunick, Marcella Hackbardt, Sandy Litchfield, Karen Marston, Rachelle Mozman, Julie Schenkelberg and Mary Ann Strandell. This exhibition explores the various emotional territories that have become popular ways of expressing who we are, and how we live, at any given moment. Zones, which began to be used in the mainstream press, became popular after WWII ("Occupation Zones") and the Korean War (Demilitarized Zone") when it became necessary to demarcate areas along a boundary that were either shared by many groups or were summarily off-limits to any one group. It existed previously in areas of study such as in geography or in sports. This particular version refers to an athlete who is so immersed in the moment, that like an actor he ceases to be a person and becomes a cog in system of ultimate purpose. Being "in the moment" is a quality of experience common to artists; beyond mere dedication to craft or idiosyncratic vision, it becomes necessary to project our immersion in subject matter, background context, and formal intentions so that the spectator can share in a degree of portent equally. The artwork can effect them, creating a state of contingency between its own qualities and aspects of their own experience. They may walk away bemused or challenged, but in the end they will have had their own moment; they will have been transported to a new zone as the strongest art does this well. About David Gibson: David Gibson is an independent curator, art writer, and art world consultant with a long personal and professional history in the New York art world. Gibson grew up in New York City with parents who ran a historically recognized gallery in Soho and the Upper East Side from 1967 to 2001, and with an extended family that included artists, art critics, and gallerists. He attended Bradford College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing and Literature, published two literary magazines, The Visionary and The Moody Street Review, and wrote his thesis on Jack Kerouac. From 1997 to 2001 he ran his father's gallery, and starting in 1996 began writing reviews for a series of small magazines such as Cover, NY Soho Arts, and Zingmagazine, the Toronto based C magazine, and Flash Art. Starting in 2001 he began curating independently. Some of his notable exhibitions included "Erotika," Cartoon," and "Beautiful Grotesque" at Riva Gallery, "Everland" at Annina Nosei Gallery, "ID_ENTITY" at Nurture Art Inc, "Social Space" and "Market Value" at Cuchifritos Art Space, "Beautiful Dreamer" at Spaces Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio, and a five year run of curating solo exhibitions in a storefront at Realform Project Space in Williamsburg from 2002-2007. His most recent exhibition was "I Am My World" at NOoSphere Arts and his most recently published article was " The Low Road: The Cultural Landscape of the Bowery at The New Museum" in Artillery: Killer Text on Art, January 2013. He has also lectured and taught at state universities in Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, and Wisconsin.
