BARBARIC FREEDOM curated by Anne Pontegnie 09 JULY 2010 - 11 SEPTEMBER 2010 John Armleder, Merlin Carpenter, Roberto Cuoghi, Jim Drain, Matias Faldbakken, Alex Hubbard, Jasper Johns, Sherrie Levine, Klara Liden, Paul McCarthy, Annette Messager, Robert Morris, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Stephan Rinck, Josh Smith, Christopher Wool Only he who perceives the signatures and indices of the archaic in the most modern and recent can be contemporary. G. Agamben, What Is the Contemporary? Simon Lee Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition curated by Anne Pontegnie, juxtaposing abstract and figurative works by an internationally renowned selection of artists. In response to the proliferation of images and the accumulation of history, artists sometimes feel the need to go back to the liberating energy of the one-off action or the jubilation of pagan celebrations. Far from the perversity of pop or the sophistication of appropriation, this exhibition brings together impulsive, primitive actions and totemic objects that express the common contemporary hunger for emancipation, whether in isolated or decisive moments of the artists work, or at the very foundation of their practice. |
