It’s When It’s Gone That You Really Notice It Julien Bismuth Lucas Blalock Henri Chopin Marie Cool Fabio Balducci Sam Ekwurtzel November 9 to December 22, 2012 Simone Subal is very happy to present the show It’s When It’s Gone That You Really Notice It, featuring the work of Julien Bismuth, Lucas Blalock, Henri Chopin, Marie Cool Fabio Balducci, and Sam Ekwurtzel. The show will run through December 22, 2012. Much of contemporary life appears to be defined by an emphasis on the here and now, the presentness of objects, and the immediacy of returns. The quest for the fullness of the moment casts much to the side, often leading us to forget that presence, and by extension experience, exists in relation to absence. Absence is not a virtue, just as slowness is no better than speed, but to consider in the midst of presence what is missing, forgotten, and left to memory can be liberating. The works in It’s When It’s Gone That You Really Notice It suggest the specter of absence in distilled and poetic ways, whether through the tenuous relation between the original and the copy or how the intensity of a moment enables us to recognize what is not there. As with life, absence is one—albeit critical—part of the equation. Julien Bismuth (born 1973 in Paris) works and lives in New York.
