North Gallery + Central Gallery

Manifest stands back to take a look at the big picture this fall with MACROSCOPE, a show of artworks exploring big ideas. Works of drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography by artists from around the world present themes of a grand scale for our examination. Visit Manifest Gallery to gain some new perspective!

For this exhibit 84 artists submitted 234 works for consideration. Thirteen works by the following ten artists from seven states and Ireland were selected by several jurors from across the U.S. for presentation in the gallery and the Manifest Exhibition Annual publication.

Sometimes a particular work of art has a way of making us aware of our own physicality, helping us feel our bodies by giving us new perspective on our relationship to things around us. In MONOLITHIC, Manifest presents artworks from around the world that engage our sense of physical, intellectual, and emotional scale.

For this exhibit 82 artists submitted 240 works for consideration. Fifteen works by the following fourteen artists from twelve states and Canada were selected by several jurors from across the U.S. for presentation in the gallery and the Manifest Exhibition Annual publication.

EVENT HORIZONS
PHOTOGRAPHS BY LUCAS JAMES

Parallel Space

This November, Manifest presents Lucas James’ EVENT HORIZONS, a photographic exhibition of the human body seen reflected in scarred and dented metal surfaces. Instead of clear figures, these photographs show bodies twisted by internal conflict and undergoing massive transformation.

This exhibition of Lucas James’ work is one of 9 selected from among 151 proposals submitted for consideration for Manifest’s 12th season.
 
Of his work the artist states:

Everyone, at least once in their lives, goes through an experience so profound, so traumatic, so transformative that it leaves them forever changed. I call these times Event Horizons, after the point of no return surrounding a black hole. Event horizons are moments of deep metamorphosis that, while often painful, result in profound growth- events after which we look back and say to ourselves "I was such a different person then!" 

This is what I'm trying to illustrate by interrupting the body with dents, creases and divots in the metal reflective surface - that moment of the Event Horizon when everything is about to be transformed, reborn and forever changed.

Lucas James was an avid photographer in his early twenties before putting the camera down for fifteen years to purse advanced degrees in biology and chemistry. He then went on to work at several biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the Cambridge area where his focus has been on developing treatments for cancer and life-threatening infections.

After a fifteen-year lull he picked up a camera again, looking for a way to explore the world from a non-analytical perspective and focusing early on the human forms limitless potential for creating new shapes.

Walk on Woodburn - Cincinnati’s Instant Arts District!: visit galleries, shops, and restaurants all along Woodburn Avenue, all with special events and fare for the evening of November 6th.

The Saturday folloing the opening of his exhibition, EVENT HORIZONS, Lucas James will be at Manifest to discuss his photograpic works revealing internal turmoil through distorted images of the human figure.
Come and listen, ask questions, and join the creative community at Manifest!

*Meet the Manifest Artists In Residence!: At every opening reception the MAR space and resident artists Marina Fridman and Samantha Haring will be receiving visits, discussion, and hosting a viewing of their recent and ongoing projects for their one-year Manifest residencies. This will be a chance for the public to meet these two artists (list something awesome or normal about them) as they continue their time at Manifest.

GALLERY HOURS (free admission): Tuesday through Friday 12 – 7:00 p.m., Sat. 12 – 5:00 p.m. or by appointment - school groups welcome and encouraged.
