Manifest Gallery Presents

TEXTUALITY
An International Exhibit of Works Involving Text or Letterforms

Main Gallery

Opening Reception 6-9p.m. on Friday, March 9
Exhibit continues through April 6

Not long after humanity began drawing, drawings evolved into writing. Pictures became symbols, abstraction blossomed, and language became visual. Two branches, sharing one root, carried forward people's ideas, feelings, and plans. The visual and the verbal arts shared the role of encapsulating civilization's data. And they continue to do so today, in so many wondrous and varied ways. TEXTUALITY is an exhibit that inquires into the overlap of these two branches, seeking examples of where the verbal is made visual, where language returns into image.

Submissions to this competitive exhibit were expected to range from the straightforward, to works that were abstract, fragmented, or in other ways surprising or significantly processed away from recognition. Manifest was eager to see just how artists make work of any media or genre using text or letter forms as a significant element. The artists of TEXTUALITY have satisfied our curiosity, and their exhibit promises to engage visitors to the gallery in unusual and delightful ways.

For this exhibit 331 artists from 41 states and 13 countries submitted 835 works for consideration. Fifteen works by the following 13 artists from Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Canada, and Germany were selected for presentation in the gallery and catalog.

INK and AIR
A Four Person Exhibit of Paintings, Drawings, and Photographs

Featuring Judith Brandon (Cleveland), Van Chu (Salt Lake City), Patti Jordan (Montclair, NJ), and Randall Tiedman (Cleveland)

Drawing Room

Opening Reception 6-9p.m. on Friday, March 9
Exhibit continues through April 6

For Manifest's 8th exhibition season we received 130 solo, group, and concept proposals for consideration for six spots in our schedule. We simply did not have room in our calendar for everything we wanted to show. But during the process the works of four artists in our top pool of proposals seemed to vie in equal determination for our attention. It also happened that three of the four have had work included in previous Manifest publications (INDA and INPA). So we capitulated, and gave them all an invitation to mingle in one intimate collection in our Drawing Room gallery. We are convinced that the collection we have selected will make for an enticing experience of Ink and Air...

Judith Brandon attended the Cleveland Institute of Art with majors in enameling and drawing. After graduating in 1987, she began to exhibit her drawings and immediately garnered awards from the Matrix gallery in CA, the Crossman Gallery in Wisconsin and the Hera Gallery in Rhode Island. Brandon's work is largely intuitive and draws from her enameling background. Since 2006, she has had two solo shows at the 1 point 618 Gallery in Cleveland. She is the recipient of numerous awards including a Best of Show at the Bay Arts Annual Juried Exhibition and a Jurors Choice Award at the Butler Institute of American Art Mid-Year Exhibition. Her work is represented by the Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Van Chu is a Vietnamese artist who came to the United States in 2001. He received his MFA from the University of Utah in 2010 majoring in Digital Imaging/Photography. His works have been featured in exhibitions across the country from Los Angeles to New York City, including exhibits curated by such notable individuals as Maura Lynch, Assistant Curator of Drawings at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Nathan Trotman, associate curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Christiane Paul from the Whitney Museum of American Art. Van Chu has also received awards in multiple competitions juried by curators such as Lauren Hinkson from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Elisabeth Sussman from the Whitney Museum of American Art and Felice Frankel from Harvard University. Van Chu's photographic artworks carry the spirit of traditional Chinese painting but combined with the use of modern technology, acrylic, water and calligraphy ink, they depict a portrait of the art ist himself as an outsider on the American shore, while giving tradition a breath of fresh air, determining to connect what came before us and what is yet to come.

Patti Jordan is a multidisciplinary artist working within the realms of both commercial and fine art. She was recently accepted into New York based The Drawing Center's online curated registry, "The Viewing Program" (NYC). Jordan received an Honorarium in 2009 for works included in "Lineweight" a contemporary drawing exhibition at Truman State University Art Gallery, (Kirksville, MO). Two of her works have also been published in Manifest's own 5th International Drawing Annual. Jordan lectures on art and has written reviews for ArtCat Zine. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Pratt Institute and holds a Master of Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude, from Montclair State University. She exhibits widely.

Randall Tiedman is a highly intuitive self taught artist. He was accepted for an advanced standing at the Cleveland Institute of Art after his tour of duty in Vietnam but decided to pursue art on his own, He did not publicly exhibit his art until 1982 when he made his gallery debut in the Proscenium '82 at the Beck Center in Lakewood, Ohio. The following year he was selected for inclusion in an exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art that was curated by Sherman Lee. Since that time, Tiedman has received more than 24 awards in juried exhibitions including the Erie Art Museum, Trumbull Art Guild, the Artist Archives of the Western Reserve, the Beck Center, the Hallinin Religious Show and the Fine Arts Association. He has been selected for inclusion in juried shows by Don Eddy, David Hickey, James Harithas, Sherman Lee, Tom Hinson, Barbara Rose, Edward Henning, George Adams, Larry Salander, Lynne Warren and in 1992 he was selected by Terry Dintenfass for first pl ace in the National Butler Institute of American Arts Mid-Year Show. His work has been shown at the Albright-Knox Museum, Case Western Reserve University, B K Smith Gallery, Lakeland College, Cuyahoga Community College, In-Town Club as well as numerous invitationals. His works are also in the collection of the Butler Museum of Art, The Erie Art Museum, World Trade Center, Case Western Reserve University, Lakeland Community College as well as private and corporate collections across the United States. In 2002 his works were purchased by Circus De Solei. Tiedman is a former President and co-founder of the Artist Archives of the Western Reserve, an organization dedicated to preserving the works of Ohio artists.

PROCESS
Drawings by David Kassan

In the Parallel Space
Curated by Tim Parsley

Artist's Reception 6-9p.m. on Friday, March 9 at Manifest Gallery.
Exhibit continues through April 6

The artist will be in attendance for the reception, and will be conducting a four-day intensive portrait workshop at Manifest Drawing Center March 10-13th as well as a four-hour public portrait demonstration Friday, March 16th from 6-10p.m. also at Manifest Drawing Center in Madisonville. (visit http://www.manifestdrawingcenter.org for more info on the workshop and demo)

For our 4th solo exhibit of Manifest’s 8th season, we welcome the work of David Kassan to Cincinnati for the first time. Recognized internationally for his mastery of contemporary portrait painting and drawing, he represents the leading edge of current approaches to realism. While fastidious in their application, Kassan’s portraits capture more than just technical acuity. They evoke emotional precision and quiet confidence.

Of his work, Kassan states:
My work is a way of meditation, a way of slowing down time though the careful observation of overlooked slices of my environment. It is the subtlety of emotion in my acquaintances that inhabit the aforementioned environment which intrigues me…

Time is the most valuable thing that we all have, the one aspect of daily life that we can not get back once its gone. I want to use time while trying to understand the world around me. PROCESS: Drawings by David Kassan gives us a unique view into the “slowing down of time” through a specific focus on his works on paper. The opportunity to investigate the drawings of an artist is an intimate privilege, as often they reveal the inner workings and decisions that are sometimes covered over once paint is applied. We are particularly pleased to offer this exhibition in conjunction with an intensive portraiture workshop taught by Kassan at Manifest’s Drawing Center Studio as well as a 4-hour public demonstration given by him on March 16th (see www.manifestdrawingcenter.org for details). Essential to Kassan’s practice as an artist is his commitment to teaching others. Therefore, Manifest is proud to offer a Cincinnati platform for Kassan as both artist and teacher.
