7th Annual
RITES OF PASSAGE

Main Gallery
Opening Friday, May 27, 6-9p.m.
Exhibit continues: May 28 - June 24, 2011

Conceived and initiated in 2005, The Rites of Passage series of exhibits was developed in order to support student excellence by offering a public venue for the display of the advanced creative research made by artists emerging from academic study in the visual arts; to document and promote young artists as they transition into their professional careers; and to bring the positive creative energies of national institutions together at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Through seven years of evolution, the RITES exhibits have become increasingly competitive, with students, professors, and college programs realizing the significance of inclusion in each highly selective exhibition and companion catalog.

With this seventh annual installment of the Rites series, Manifest will award $300 as best of show prize to encourage and support excellence at this career level. The Rites call for submissions was open to students of undergraduate programs graduating or expecting to graduate in 2010, 2011, or 2012. The best of show award will be announced the night of the opening reception, May 27th. Works on view will include a range of media and approaches, including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, glass, and ceramics. Works were selected based on the votes of seven jury members in a blind jury process.

For the exhibit 162 artists representing 88 different college and university art programs submitted 381 works for consideration. Thirteen works by the following 12 artists representing eleven different academic institutions will be featured in the 7th annual Rites of Passage exhibit at Manifest Gallery.

Manifest announces Magnitude 7.7

Opening Reception 6-9p.m. on Friday, May 27th.

7th Annual
MAGNITUDE 7

Drawing Room and Parallel Space Gallery
Opening Friday, May 27, 6-9p.m.
Exhibit continues: May 28 - June 24, 2011

Every year Manifest calls for little works of art from around the world. Each exhibit brings in hundreds of powerful yet diminutive masterpieces for our jury to consider. Inevitably we end up with a gallery full of diverse, compelling, and exquisite little gems. Manifests patrons eagerly await the Magnitude 7 event, thrilling to discover the variety and charm of so many little creative treasures.
Small works are very portable and fit well into many spaces. They also evoke in the viewer a sense of one's own physicality, in a completely different way than average or large sized works. Small works are intimate; inviting approach and inspection. Like short poetry, they are a challenge to craft with the same presence of their larger counterparts.

We are delighted to offer this seventh annual exhibit of works no larger than seven inches in any dimension - our collection of visual haiku.

For this seventh incarnation of the project 349 artists submitted 801 works for consideration by Manifest's rigorous jury process. Forty-one works by the following 24 artists from 15 states and the Bahamas, Canada, and China were selected for presentation in the gallery and catalog. Works on view throughout two galleries will include paintings, mixed media, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, digital drawing, and more.
