Griffin Art Prize 2012

The ten artists shortlisted for the Griffin Art Prize 2012, a new painting and drawing award dedicated to supporting emerging talent, have been revealed.
Launched earlier this year, the Griffin Art Prize offers one winner a six month studio residency culminating in a solo show in September 2013.
Of more than 200 entries received, all of which are of a very high standard, the final ten were selected by the judging panel, which includes internationally renowned painter Ian Davenport; director of London’s CHARLIE SMITH gallery, Zavier Ellis; Art Foundation chair Jenny Lindén Urnes; and award winning journalist Deborah Orr.

Shortlisted for the Griffin Art Prize 2012 are:

Jemma Appleby, whose charcoal on paper drawings investigate the complex relationship between architecture and the landscape.
Lindsey Bull, who explores reality and illusion in her work, creating the sensation of a fractured reality and tension in a moment in time.
Ross Brown, whose work investigates the fragments of Modernity that remain within our present-day built landscape, through a parallel examination of the medium of painting itself.
Rebecca Byrne, who explores a space between personal narrative and the uncanny in her work, in a quest to balance truth with fiction.
Beatrice Haines, whos work focuses on relationships between the scientific and emotional, the grotesque and beautiful, the micro and macro and life and death.
Hyojun Hyun, whose work seeks to capture the familiar and turn it into something special.
Alzbeta Jaresova, who uses both drawing and sculpture to explore the subconscious dialogue between historical memory and the functioning of social structures.
Jennifer Maidment, who focuses on the organic things in life in her work, from faces and bodies to trees and vast landscapes. Her aim is to create art that evokes beauty without cynicism.
Ian Robinson, whose work is situated within the enthusiasts’ world of collecting and the atmosphere engendered by those activities.
Xiaofei Yue, who experiments with different media to create work which questions the education and propaganda she encountered whilst growing up.

Leading fine art materials brands Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris have launched the Griffin Art Prize as part of their long-term commitment to sustaining and nurturing new talent in painting and drawing.

Allia Rizvi, representing the brands, comments:
“Quality, innovation and potential were the key criteria when it came to short-listing the entries. With such a high standard overall, making it onto the shortlist is a fantastic achievement – not least as the exhibition of their work will be a showcase for collectors, critics, art world professionals and the general public alike."
“There is a wide variety of styles amongst these graduates, but all demonstrate a lively engagement with materials and an over-arching need to communicate their ideas – which is exciting to see.”

The overall winner will be announced at a private view of the exhibition showcasing the shortlisted artists’ work, taking place on 7th November 2012 at the Griffin Gallery, London.

Following the announcement of the winner, the winning artist will commence their six month working residency in The Studio Building, London W.11 during March 2013. The studio is located next to a state of the art Innovation & Development department, where chemists work on the development of fine art products creating a unique position of having fine art materials' expertise on the doorstep.
