Artists in this exhibition: John Cronin

John Cronin / Standard Deviation / 30 May – 06 July 2013

Green On Red Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of new paintings entitled Standard Deviation by John Cronin. The exhibition features one monumental oil on aluminium triptych and smaller paintings on aluminium. All have been produced since his last solo exhibition in the gallery in 2011 entitled Augmented Reality.

There is something unusual in Cronin’s work in the way that his paintings appear bold and arresting from a distance yet are also complex and intricate in such a way that, on close inspection, an intense amount of detail is revealed. Underneath the thin surface, now varnished and reflective and slightly resistant in sections, is a myriad of layers of successive gestures and figures each of which colour and effect the previous layer. Added to the layering of variously thin or translucent or more solid marks is an uncommon technical virtuosity aided by the use of multiple hand tools and play.

A recurring motif of 3 red discs – the mean, perhaps - track a horizontal line across the lower region of the paintings but sit on the surface in different ways. They bleed and leak into the surrounding colour in automatic ways that are outside the complete control of the artist’s hand. Cronin delights in these kinds of staged accidents or engineered “ deviations “. It is as if he is fully aware of how the world is not always as it appears or should be or how, through retrospective rationalisation, the deviation can be seen, cynically, to prove the standard.

When I came to the end of the AR (Augmented Reality) works the feeling of celebration of this “Brave New World” was replaced by a feeling that all was not as it seems and that the processing of information made for bleak reading. Reality, for anybody who had a social conscience, had changed greatly.

Cronin goes on to explain that, according to the theory of Standard Deviation, despite brave attempts to explain and justify and to control our current confusion in the world: “things were obviously falling apart” and corrupted.

Cronin’s capacity to deftly hold these many elements in one painting in tense orchestration is evident and rampant in Standard Deviation.

Standard Deviation will run until 06 July 2013. For further information please contact the gallery at T: +353 (0) 1 6713414 or [email protected]
