Niamh O’Malley / Model Opening Reception: Thursday 06 Oct 6 – 8pm Exhibition Dates: 07 Oct – 05 Nov 2011 Green On Red Gallery is delighted to announce Model, Niamh O’Malley’s fourth solo exhibition of new work in the Lombard Street East gallery. The exhibition opens to the public on October 7 and runs until November 5, 2011. The exhibition comprises a large projected video work filmed in the nearby Royal Hibernian Academy’s life drawing studio, a sculptural screen of glass & mirror and a series of new drawings. Although diverse in material and mode, the whole installation adds up to an intense exercise in perception and complex visual entanglements. Moving image is used to document stillness, while abstract painting is found in a sculptural, partially translucent form. The resulting tensions between the different image-making processes is carefully pitched in this presentation, as it was in her previous exhibition, Frame, Glass, Black (2009). Model generates an encounter between the enquiring gaze or stare of the viewer and the silent and still figure in the video of the same name. The model of the video is caught against the organizing grid of the RHA’s upper-storey, multi-panelled window frames through which can be seen the treetop and roofline of the city beyond. Functioning as a dispassionate ‘reaction shot’ to the other elements in the exhibition, and to the viewer, the model’s regular shift into ‘freeze frame’ offers a kind of protected vision or distance which periodically collapses as the suspended moments are broken. There are both echoes and contrasts found in the abstract composition of Screen. It’s framework of overlapping ‘windows’ form a second and rhyming glazed curtain to look at, to peer through and to be seen in and through. Of ‘Screen’ the artist herself states ‘the sculpture’s negative solidity both deflects and absorbs, its individual elements become layered models or prototypes for mark making and viewing’. Other works by O’Malley currently on view in Dublin include a new work Quarry (2011) in Dublin Contemporary 2011 in Earlsfort Terrace, and Memorial Gardens (2009) in the Twenty exhibition in the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham.
